Fold3 issues

Is anyone having troubles accessing certain records on Fold3 (eg [1])? I've tried different browsers and incognito mode, but no luck. Connormah (talk) 15:34, 3 April 2024 (UTC)

At least using the link you've provided, I load up a grey screen. No errors, but no content. -- Zanimum (talk) 12:07, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
Thank you - it seems to be an issue isolated to this particular record set/collection. Connormah (talk) 15:26, 28 April 2024 (UTC)

Hathi Trust

We really need institutional accounts with them. They've digitized a large number of books and other resources, but will not provide access to any that are still within the copyright period, except to libraries, schools, etc. that have accounts with them. This is intensely frustrating, since they have have books that Google has scanned (for no apparent reason) but will provide no access to at all not even snippet view, and which Internet Archive does not have at all. Repeatedly now, I have had to outright buy books (due to the near-total demise of inter-library loan in the US except within the same state) that I need for, say, 5 minutes to verify one thing. (Note: As a "GFYs" to the publishers and coalitions thereof filing these lawsuits against Internet Archive, I only buy said books used, so the publishers get nothing. I make exception for niche publishers who are uninvolved in these anti-fair-use legal shenanigans.)  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  15:01, 27 April 2024 (UTC)

Hi Sam, hate to bug you on an unrelated matter but I was wondering if you can shed light onthe issue I raised above re accessing Haaretz from the Library ? I can't seem to do so and I have to assume I am not the only one. I posted that a while back to no avail. Coretheapple (talk) 14:14, 29 April 2024 (UTC)

I'm getting an error from springerLink:

  1. I log in, it appears successful, and so does a search starting from the url https://link-springer-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/
  2. When I click on a content item that I want to access (in this case, at https://link-springer-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/chapter/10.1007/978-3-031-41463-3_9 ), it isn't displayed and I get the following error:

"Page Not Found... Not logged in - 132.174.252.114 The Wikipedia Library Wikimedia Foundation (3004182381)"

Usually if the library logs you out it prompts for a re-log in, but this is happening a few minutes after the initial log in with no prompt to enter credentials again.

Hmm. I'm seeing similar issues, including occasionally getting "We’re sorry, something doesn't seem to be working properly. Please try refreshing the page. If that doesn't work, please contact support so we can address the problem." messages everywhere. Downloading PDFs does seem to work between these errors (e.g. at https://link-springer-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/article/10.1007/s12207-023-09495-z). The 'Not Found' error seems to particularly be present on book chapter pages. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 06:05, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

Same here. Note that on the main Brill site, there's a header with "We are experiencing access issues to a selection of our reference works. Hello ExclusiveEditor! I'm experiencing the exact same problem, with same error message as you. I've done some searching, which also turned this post up, & seen an old report of this same issue in the past. Seems like some kind of glitch at their end, I'm hoping it will be resolved soon. Hello AstonishingTunesAdmirer & others interested! Thanks for the the Phabricator link! I've now checked the multiple browsers I have installed; the latest version of Firefox (which is my normal browser) produces the error when trying to search the Wikipedia Library, Edge browser reacts the same as does Opera browser. However the ancient Waterfox Classic does not produce the error & works as normal! So seems like something has gotten broken with newer browsers very recently. Hope this is of help in someone solving the problem! LooksGreatInATurtleNeck (talk) 08:40, 12 May 2024 (UTC)

Haaretz English

I can't seem to access Haaretz English articles when accessing through the library. Apparently there's the same problem with the Hebrew site too via the library. Am I doing something wrong or is our access limited? I do seem to be able to see daily updates, but I believe the general public can as well by just going to the regular Haaretz site. Coretheapple (talk) 14:28, 6 April 2024 (UTC)

Just to be a bit more specific: when I use the Wikilibrary link for Haaretz English, I am indeed able to obtain access to Haaretz English. However, I find that this does not give me full access to the articles on the site in most instances.

For instance. Going to the site through the library I can get full access to the article titled "Dancers Fleeing Fake Gunfire at Hamas' Nova Massacre Site? On the Set of Israel's Independence Day Music Video." Going to that through the public website I can only see an excerpt. In this instance the Wikipedia Library site is providing full access. That however is not usually the case.

For instance, if I try to access via the library "Analysis | Two Assassinations, Same Problem: Israel Didn't Think About the Consequences" I get the same limited excerpt I do through the regular public website. That is true for the vast majority of articles I attempt to access via the Wikipedia Library.

Is this a bug or is this simply Haaretz limiting access? Anyone know? Coretheapple (talk) 14:44, 13 April 2024 (UTC)

Here's an example of what I'm talking about. Clicking on the Wikipedia Library link for the English Haaretz, the lead headline is "Report: Hamas Accepts Gaza Cease-fire Deal; Israeli Officials Reject Prospect of War Ending." But when you click on the article, you cannot access more than the first few paragraphs. Coretheapple (talk) 14:47, 4 May 2024 (UTC)

I have the same problem using Haaretz English. But this does not seem to occur on Haaretz Hebrew, where I have been able to open every article I tried. That would suggest that the problem is technical, ratgher than a deliberate decision. For instance, I can read only the first few lines of the article By Shutting Down Al Jazeera, Israel Is Shooting Itself in the Foot, but I can access all of the equivalent article on Haaretz Hebrew, סגירת אל־ג'זירה לא תפגע בחמאס ולא תשנה את מעמדה של קטאר.RolandR (talk) 18:04, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
I can't read Hebrew but I have had the same problem when I attempted to access the Hebrew edition.
If Haaretz is not going to give Wikipedia editors more access than is available to the general public, having it on Wikipedia Library is abusive, a form of advertising and it shouldn't be there at all. This problem should either be fixed or it should go. Also I want to express my disappointment at the utter indifference to this shown by the Wikipedia Library staff. I raised this issue over a month ago, and repeated it privately in an email. Not ONE response. Coretheapple (talk) 14:30, 8 May 2024 (UTC)

Haaretz English should be removed from the Wikipedia Library bundle

See above. Haaretz does not offer Wikipedia editors ANY advantage, at least in its English edition. One gets the same access as is available to members of the general public who are not subscribers. Thus its being in the Wikipedia Library package is a form of advertising that needs to stop. I raised this issue over a month ago, have received no response from the Wikipedia Library so I have to assume that this is a feature, not a bug. Coretheapple (talk) 14:35, 8 May 2024 (UTC)

@Coretheapple It seems to be working now, I was able to load a couple of articles on English Haaretz. Isi96 (talk) 19:43, 9 May 2024 (UTC)
I imagine what's available to the general public is available to Wikipedians through the Library. But to to the "Israel Gaza War" section and click on Israel's Mossad Admits for the First Time: We Were Surprised on October 7 and see what happens. No access. Coretheapple (talk) 20:29, 10 May 2024 (UTC)
I checked that article just now, the whole thing is accessible. Isi96 (talk) 08:04, 11 May 2024 (UTC)
It seems there might be a slight lag between it becoming accessible. The newest articles aren't loading for me, but all those that are a day or more old are. – Isochrone (talk) 10:53, 11 May 2024 (UTC)
Yes I now can obtain that as well. However "Mark Rudd Led Antiwar Students at Columbia in 1968. He Says Gaza Protesters Are Repeating His Mistakes," also May 9, is not accessible however. Evidently they are blocking access to recent articles, and allowing at least some older articles to be accessed. While I guess we have to take what we can get, that is a shame as Haaretz is a fully acceptable source per WP:RS. Coretheapple (talk) 15:45, 11 May 2024 (UTC)
By the way I was remiss in not thanking you and Isochrone for helping me to troubleshoot this. Coretheapple (talk) 18:42, 11 May 2024 (UTC)

@Coretheapple: Apologies for the lack of response here - I somehow overlooked your initial post and then I was attending the Wikimedia Hackathon and having some vacation time from 2nd May, so I've only just seen your email and the rest of the messages here. It's possible that Haaretz are embargoing content for a day or two before providing us access, but if that's the case it hadn't been communicated to us before now. It's also possibly a technical issue that we can resolve. We've contacted Haaretz and I'll update here as soon as I know more. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 13:51, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

Thanks, appreciate your getting back to me on this. Haaretz is a valued resource on I/P articles, which are often updated fairly quickly, and is rare in that it is used by both "sides" of the controversy. If they have a quiet embargo on new articles it can discourage editors from using it entirely, as editors may react (as I did) that the resource is not available at all. I'm still not certain as to how many articles are withheld from use. Obviously we can rectify this by placing a caveat on the Haaretz/English/Hebrew entries at Wikipedia Library. Half a loaf is better than none. However, I think that such an embargo is unwise and significantly curbs use of Haaretz in Wikipedia articles. So I hope they rethink whatever embargo they have in place. Coretheapple (talk) 15:33, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

Hi all! I've been using this on my own computer for almost a year now, but it just occurred to me to share this bookmarklet with fellow TWL users. Cannot access Newspapers.com clipping

My clippings redirect me to "This page is not available. This page is pending publication, has been removed or moved to a new location." SL93 (talk) 22:15, 19 June 2024 (UTC)

I don't know why it's happening all of a sudden, but it's fixed on an individual basis if you remove the "-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org" from the url and replace it with ".newspapers.com", which you should be doing anyways if you're using the clipping on Wikipedia, because the former isn't accessible by anyone else without a Newspapers.com account, while the latter url formatting can be seen by everyone. SilverserenC 22:28, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
Ok. I have been just changing it to that once I actually get to the adding the links to the article. Thank you. SL93 (talk) 22:29, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
I assume the page is not available issue is some Wikipedia Library account access problem (which we've seemingly been having in various forms for a while based on sections above), considering it goes away by changing the URL. Is this a known issue? Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 16:10, 24 May 2024 (UTC)

What worked for me was registering an account at newspapers.com (actual site, not the TWL proxy), logging in there, then logging in again through TWL proxy. AstonishingTunesAdmirer 連絡 16:19, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
Mike Christie I literally just clipped an article and yes, you must signed in to clip. When you first enter the search page there is a person icon where you can sign in if you already have a newspapers.com account. Otherwise, you need to create an account on Newspapers.com directly. SusunW (talk) 16:20, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
That worked -- thanks! I tried it both ways around -- logging in to my account first and then going through the library; that didn't work. Going through the library and then logging in did work. Thanks for the help! Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 16:24, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
Thank you, AstonishingTunesAdmirer and SusunW! It's been months of frustration, the lack of clipping.
I'm wondering, is there a way we can add that sort of instruction to the Library itself, so that the larger user base who's not looking on this talk page will know? -- Zanimum (talk) 02:17, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
When asked about this over at the WP:Discord server, @Samwalton9 (WMF) mentioned that instead they've been thinking about removing the Newspapers.com proxy entirely (as it's hard to maintain and has all these issues with clipping) and returning to the system where you manually apply to get your account upgraded for a year. AstonishingTunesAdmirer 連絡 02:30, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
That system was easier to use. TrottieTrue (talk) 22:01, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
For Newspapers.com, yes, unfortunately you currently need to register outside of the library, and then log in inside the library. It's a pain and not how we'd like it to be. If you have thoughts about returning to the older system of individual account accesses I'd love to hear - we're evaluating the workload to move back to that system. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 17:12, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
Now that I know how it works it's fine as far as I'm concerned. And I got very quick help here; it's annoying but only a minor issue if everyone knows how to do it. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 18:02, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
Samwalton9 (WMF) It's not unique to newspapers.com. Same happens with newspaperarchive and the British newspaper archives. The problem with the old system was that they stopped sending renewal notices, so inevitably your access would be suspended and you'd have to reapply, causing several weeks delay in getting back up and running. Once I figured out the log in system, this seems to work fine, except when changes are made by the provider to their system, and the fact that British newspaper archives billed me for renewal. I paid it, but it was weird. I do think it would be helpful to provide an explanation on the various newspaper collections that to clip you have to sign in. SusunW (talk) 18:10, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
I agree with SusunW. The inconvenience of having to register etc. is very minor compared to the old system. Figureofnine (talkcontribs) 19:06, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
I, too, had this clipping problem. My only complaint about the current system is that if you're trying to use the proxy URL for citations, it points non-Wikipedia-Library users to the top page of The Wikipedia Library not the actual resource. So this is the URL for the item that I see
https://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/image/480189291/
and this is the one I need to use for a citation
https://www.newspapers.com/image/480189291/
I agree the wait time was frustrating with the old system, so I'm not sure of a better solution but I might not mind the old system if it were to come back (apologies for weird formatting, feel free to make it look nicer). Jessamyn (my talk page) 20:39, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
I fixed this issue by writing a small userscript:
Extended content
// ==UserScript==
// @name         TWL proxy fix
// @namespace    http://tampermonkey.net/
// @version      2024-05-23
// @description Replace TWL proxy link in share window
// @author       You
// @match        https://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/*
// @icon         https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?sz=64&domain=oclc.org
// @grant        none
// @require      https://code.jquery.com/jquery-3.6.0.min.js
// ==/UserScript==

/* globals $ */

(function() {
    'use strict';
    $('body').on('mouseover', '#share_link_link_url', function() {
        var str = $(this).val();
        var regex = /https:\/\/www-newspapers-com\.wikipedialibrary\.idm\.oclc\.org\/(.*)/g;
        str = str.replace(regex, "https://newspapers.com/$1");
        $(this).val(str);
    });
})();
You'd need Tampermonkey extension installed in your browser to make it work. Then you click on the Tampermonkey icon → Create a new script, replace everything there with this code and click File → Save. Then on Newspapers.com (TWL proxy version of it, that is), once you create a clipping, there will be a blue Share button in a panel on the right side of your screen. When you click it and mouse over the link in the share window, it should replace it with the proper link. AstonishingTunesAdmirer 連絡 21:33, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
All that seems really complicated. I just sign in to Newspapers.com, go to "My clippings" and paste the link from there. SusunW (talk) 04:15, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
Yeah, that works too, but then I would need to keep the second tab opened. And if I already have dozens upon dozens of tabs opened, keeping track of it is daunting. AstonishingTunesAdmirer 連絡 04:21, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
Thank you. I already use Tampermonkey so this was an easy adjustment. Jessamyn (my talk page) 21:17, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
I don't understand what "register outside of the library, and then log in inside the library" means. Can you explain further, or point me towards directions on how to do this?
Also, I have been unable to access newspapers.com on my home computer but am able to do so when I log in at my local public library. I don't know why this is, or if it is related to the registration issue you mention. Mehendri Solon (talk) 15:53, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
https://www.newspapers.com/ is "outside of the library". When you access it through The Wikipedia Library ("inside the library"), right now you use https://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/ (known as a proxy server). For whatever reason (unrelated to you unable to access the site), this proxy doesn't work well with the registration process, so you would need to first register at newspapers.com and then use your login/password when you log in through the proxy. AstonishingTunesAdmirer 連絡 18:17, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
I prefer the current system even with the clipping issue to the old system of losing access for long periods of time due to the weirdness of never getting notices it was lost. Ealdgyth (talk) 15:45, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
