Possible Stub Topic?[edit]

Hi Sierra,

I am reposting my message here since I think that I should have been using our group talk page, instead of your individual talk page, to discuss possible stub articles. Bear with me, I am still learning!

I am still looking through the list of stub articles and I took a peek at 23S ribosomal RNA. My first impression is that we can easily beef up this page by adding sub-headings such as: Functions, Structure, PCR applications, 23S Ribosomal Databases, etc. We could also link it to 16s ribosomal RNA because it has a similar structural role. When you get a chance please take a look and let me know what you think :)

Stub Topic "Polysomy" Selected[edit]

We have officially selected polysomy as our article as of 9:30am EST. I have updated the Wikipedia:USEP/Courses/JHU MolBio Ogg SP14/Articles 81 page to reflect that 81A has selected this topic. Let the fun begin!

Article Selection Rationale Draft Added[edit]

Hi Sierra,

I added a draft "Article Selection Rationale" to our Project Page. What I did was begin with the very nice article assessment that you already completed and then I expanded on it, and I added a few references too. My draft rationale is 272 words so feel free to change it in any way that you think would be beneficial, I trust your judgment :)

Key Points[edit]

Hello,

I definitely think we could discuss polysomy in specific chromosomes (ie; 7, 8, 13)and the role of polysomy in disease (ie; breast cancer, down's syndrome, etc...) I know there is also a lot of information on polysomy in canines, grasshoppers, and yeast. I like the preliminary outline, which somewhat mirrors the outline for "polyploidy". We can definitely expand more from there. I think it will also be important to distinguish between polyploidy and polysomy (definitely include that in the "see also" section) as that could be confusing to people.

--Ssumpf (talk) 18:34, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I completely agree with what you are saying! I found a textbook that I included in the "Further Reading" category of the outline, and it includes some information about polyploidy and polysomy. I also think that we could include some information on the causes of polysomy (i.e. translocation vs. meiosis). Maybe we could include this somewhere within the definition section for polysomy or somewhere else more fitting. DHayes14 (talk) 15:44, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Unit 8 Progress Report[edit]

I hope that you are having a great Spring Break so far! Just wanted to let you know that I am beginning to work on adding content to our preliminary outline but I didn't want to duplicate any work that you have already started. If it's okay with you I can begin with adding information to the following categories: plants, fungi, and terminology. How does this sound? DHayes14 (talk) 19:13, 20 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the Category "Plants"[edit]

Hi! I wanted to give you an update on how things are coming along with the "Plants" category. To be honest, there just isn't a whole lot of information out there on the interwebs about polysomy in plants. I did add a few sentences to the article page about what information I was able to identify, and I included links to the Wiki pages for the species of plants that have displayed polysomy. I still plan to add some information about polysomy in yeast but wanted to talk about dividing the work moving forward. I would be happy to begin tackling some of the examples of polysomy in humans (unless you have already started working on this section). I am open to hearing your thoughts/suggestions :) DHayes14 (talk) 14:49, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! No worries - I am working on the animals and humans sections at the moment, but haven't gotten to humans today. It has taken me a great deal of time! I have added about 3-4 images and about 15 references along with prose and wikilinks for several sections. I am more than happy to reconsider the outline. The polyploidy page was a good stepping stone (as they are related and it is a "B" class article), but if you'd like to take the suggestions from our peers and add to that, I am in full support! Honestly, I could use help making sure our lead and the prose I added are not too complicated - making sure we introduce and define all complicated terms, perhaps even draw our own figure for nondisjunction as a cause of polysomy....I will be working on humans after I finish Drosophilia, so if you want to add more to humans, that would be fine. I completely support a re-org if it helps! There are quite a few fungi articles, too. Keep me posted --Ssumpf (talk) 03:13, 7 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

--98.176.177.199 (talk) 22:10, 8 April 2014 (UTC)== Suggestion for article expansion ==[reply]

Hello! Since you are having difficulty finding information on plant polysomy, I propose that you cover the following in regards to human polysomies

          3.5d Polysomy of chromosome 8
         3.5e Polysomy of chromosome 17
         3.5f Trisomy 21
         3.5g Quadrosomy 4 & Quatrosomy 13
         3.5h Tetrasomy 9p
         3.5i Tetrasomy 18p

as well as Polysomy in Fungi:

          5.1 Saccharomyces cerevisiae

I have covered types, canines, & insects so far and was going to move on to polysomy X & Y after this, moving down from the top of the outline, so if you start from the opposite end, we should meet in the middle! What do you think? --Ssumpf (talk) 05:15, 7 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya! I was able to carve out some time to focus on expanding the Fungi section. Please take a look and let me know what you think. When I was researching the fungi topic I didn't come across any terrific images but will keep looking. Also, I like your idea on how to divide the human polysomy section. Were you envisioning that you would write two to three sentences for each one or somehow combine several items if/when appropriate? DHayes14 (talk) 19:35, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Great! Yeah, I have a bunch of references and was going to incorporate noteworthy parts of them to each section. I would like to have a few sentences re: each outline topic and pictures when possible, but the images are a major challenge with this topic. I think this week we are supposed worry more about content being up and less about perfection, so I was going to sort out the images, placement, and grammer as part of the final contribution and get up content this week. --98.176.177.199 (talk) 22:10, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hey - I found this article while searching the discovery of polysomy, which may be a good fungi section reference: Shult, Ernest E., and Carl C. Lindegren. "Direct Effect of Preferential Segregation on the Origin of Polysomy." (1957): 683-683.Ssumpf (talk) 20:15, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Great minds think alike! I actually found this reference while researching the fungi section but unfortunately it is from 1959 and I can't find a free copy of it available online. Were you able to access the text? DHayes14 (talk) 14:20, 6 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Unit 12 and article expansion ideas[edit]

Hello! I added a ton of references and four new subsections for human polysomy. How is the human polysomy subject coming along for you? I am going to upload images today and then really try to work on the lead after that. We definitely need more images. I think our diagnostics section could be expanded on as well as I noticed reading through specific articles on their materials and methods sections. Do you have time to do that or work on it before the final contribution? What do you think? I think the humans and diagnostics sections could be a great focus for expansion.--Ssumpf (talk) 17:55, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Howdy! The article is looking great and I can tell that you have put a lot of effort into expanding multiple areas!!! As for me, I wanted to update you that I have prose and an image or two, for both tetrasomy 9p and 18p; however, I am having some trouble finding "Quadrosomy 4 & Quatrosomy 13" information. Did you have specific references that you came across when you were looking? Also, I agree that the diagnostics section could be expanded- if not today then definitely within the next two weeks. DHayes14 (talk) 14:25, 22 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Although I found two awesome images that would have been perfect for the tetrasomy 9p and 18p sections, I don't think that I am able to use them. Both images have a copyright from Wiley-Liss. Under the "Rules of Use" section I see the following language: "In addition, Authorized Users have the right to use, with appropriate credit, figures, tables and brief excerpts from individual articles in the Electronic Product(s) in their own scientific, scholarly and educational works." I am an authorized user but probably should check with Wiley-Liss to confirm the use of images before posting. Have you encountered this situation when looking for suitable images? DHayes14 (talk) 15:32, 22 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think it was supposed to be quatrosomy 4 (ex: http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2377/2/7) and/or quadrosomy 13 (ex: in leukemia). I think it would be helpful to simplify the lead section and add to the diagnostic tools if there isn't a ton of info on the quatrosomy topc.Image copyrights are complicated. I had permission from one site and denied by another for the same image and have not heard back from the publisher, but it never hurts to ask! I got extremely discouraged and just stuck with wikicommons.Ssumpf (talk) 22:57, 22 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
How did the research come along? I still think the lead section and the diagnostics section could be improved if you are having trouble finding additional resources for polysomy in humans, plants, or fungi. I think referencing an article for each plant polysomy may help justify that section for people. We can also adjust images, although I have noticed the images change location depending on what computer I am on or how large I make my screen, which makes editing their location debatable. What do you think? Ssumpf (talk) 02:06, 30 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I was able to find references for each plant species and add them to the appropriate section- please take a look and let me know what you think :) DHayes14 (talk) 14:21, 6 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
