New Edmonton agglomeration map

Hello there :) After I've added St Albert's municipal boundaries on OpenStreetMap, we've created on the French Wikipedia a new version of the agglomeration map to use in the infobox in Edmonton articles of neighbourhood (see example here). I don't know how to do it here, so maybe somebody with enough knowledge could take care of this, please? ^^; — Foldo Squirrel (nuts?) 17:34, 1 December 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Feldo (talkcontribs)

That is an attractive map that looks significantly better than anything else I've seen on here before. The detail within it opens it up for scrutiny however. Without a legend, it is unclear what all the features are, and if there are errors in the data. Further, there appears to be inconsistent symbology for features that appear to be the same. Hwy43 (talk) 08:24, 2 December 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! Actually, the version linked above is the blank one used in the infoboxes. A version with the scale, the north and and a mini-map showing the agglomeration location on a Canada map is available here. Is there what you meant by "without a legend"? As for the symbology... I just don't get what you are refering to, sorry. >_>; (Though I'll add there is a difference of opacity on the map between what's inside the agglomeration and what's outside.) — Foldo Squirrel (nuts?) 14:47, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
@Foldo: I think you meant to link to this version. It doesn't have a legend. Though I am fairly certain what most of the colours represent, the majority of our readers will not. For my own understanding, and focusing on the agglomeration only, these are examples of some of the questions I have.
  1. What does the red square in the far northeast corner of Edmonton represent? I am referring to the area just south of the intersection of Highways 15 and 28A.
  2. In northwest Edmonton, why are the industrial lands east of 184 Street coloured red, while the industrial lands west of 184 Street are purple? Likewise, the majority of industrial lands in southeast Edmonton and Sherwood Park are purple while the Edmonton Research and Development Park (east of South Edmonton Common) is red.
  3. Why are river valley, ravines and parks within the central portions of the city coloured light green, while they are dark green in the outer portions?
  4. Why is the north half of the intermodal rail yard near Anthony Henday Drive/184 Street/137 Avenue coloured dark green? It is not a park. There are numerous other places coloured dark green that are not parks either.
Cheers, Hwy43 (talk) 05:40, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
@Hwy43:Basically, the legend is the same than the one used on OpenStreetMap. I haven't added it on Commons because I thought it would surcharge the description and can been seen by clicking on the link to OSM (on there, click on one of the buttons on the right to see the legend). :) Now, your questions. I don't have much time, but I'll try to explain as clearly as possible.
  1. It's the Edmonton Institution.
  2. According to OSM legend, the land east of 184 Street is actually commercial land, hence the different colors. I'm not really familiar about those areas so I can't say more about why the editor did this, sorry.
  3. Light green is referring probably to parks and grass areas, while dark green represent forests and woods. Some of the data is probably imported from the free and open sources (Canadian agencies, etc.) compatible with OSM licence.
  4. As I already wrote above, dark greens are referring to forest and wooden lands. Here is a direct link on OSM of this area. :) — Foldo Squirrel (nuts?) 17:13, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
@Foldo: 117Avenue beat me to responding to your first answer, but I will respond to it anyway to go with the others below.
  1. That is not the location of the Edmonton Institution. Its location is the northeast corner of Manning Drive and Meridian Street. Without a legend, the depiction of these DND lands can result in these areas being construed as commercial lands.
  2. The person that coloured the lands east of 184 Street is out to lunch. By all means the dominate land use in this area is industrial.
  3. If that is the case, the depiction of wooded areas without a corresponding legend item can result in these areas being construed as parks.
  4. According to Google Earth, the north half of the area depicted is wooded whereas the southern half is not, which begs questions about reliability of this data. It looks like the southern half has been farmed for some time.
The map is great — don't get me wrong — but, as illustrated by just the few of my observations above (there are many others), some of the data is unreliable or prone to misinterpretation. Hwy43 (talk) 07:31, 15 December 2014 (UTC)
Unfortunately we are late on the OpenStreetMap front here. There's already been thousands uploaded, see commons:Category:OpenStreetMap maps, none of which have legends. I guess it is not needed because of the map's prevalence. 117Avenue (talk) 03:08, 17 December 2014 (UTC)
@Hwy43 and 117Avenue: I don't have much time for now to answer, but maybe this link could help you to undertsand why some parts of the map are like this. You'll note here that it's an official source oftenly used by OSM contributors. And the area have not been fully mapped yet, so I'm not really suprised to find errors here (also I haven't found any helpful landuse map on the Edmonton website for sourcing landuse areas on OSM).— Foldo Squirrel (nuts?) 10:38, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
Foldo, you're off by a mile. The Edmonton Institution is on Meridian Street, and isn't shown on the map. The red square is on 17 Street NE, and appears to be an antenna field for the Department of National Defence [1]. Hwy43, red is used for DND land, the reason the garrison is a different colour is because the areas outside St. Albert, Edmonton, and Sherwood Park are faded. Foldo, I would like to have a version where there is no fading, so that it can be used as a locator map for things outside the three cities. Thanks, 117Avenue (talk) 04:42, 15 December 2014 (UTC)
@117Avenue: Yes, it is faded. For the record I understand the concept of opacity and use this technique myself. Hwy43 (talk) 07:31, 15 December 2014 (UTC)
@117Avenue: The map have been created by another user due to my lack of use of extracting tools from OSM to Inkscape. I don't have time for this right now. Maybe you could contact this user and ask if he can help too? — Foldo Squirrel (nuts?) 10:38, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
I like it, I'm adding it. 117Avenue (talk) 05:57, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
Thank you very much! :) — Foldo Squirrel (nuts?) 17:13, 13 December 2014 (UTC)

Is the 2015 Alberta Open Data Competition noteworthy enough for its own article?

Hi guys,

I'm wondering if the 2015 Apps for Alberta competition (also known as the Apps for Alberta competition) which received coverage from various Calgary and Edmonton news sources (i.e. [2], [3], [4], [5]) is noteworthy enough for its own article? I may be a little biased here since I was on one of the winning teams but I'm wondering if anyone can give me an objective idea on if this event is at all worth its own article. GSMR (talk) 19:13, 11 July 2016 (UTC)

Have you reviewed WP:GNG and Wikipedia:Notability (events) to see if it meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines? Also note there is a process to propose a new article at Wikipedia:Articles for creation. Going through that may flush out whether it is notable enough or not. Cheers, Hwy43 (talk) 01:36, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

Centennial Planetarium

I'm wondering if anyone from this WikiProject is familiar with Centennial Planetarium. It's not a new article, but it is in need of a better sourcing and a bit of clean up. If anyone has any suggestions or comments, please post them at Talk:Centennial Planetarium. Thanks in advance. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:02, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

New Article: Martin Nordegg

Hi there! I'm new to Wikipedia and interested in promoting Alberta history. Specifically, I've been looking into the town of Nordegg, Alberta. I've been working on an article about Martin Nordegg, the town founder. He's a fascinating Canadian pioneer and entrepreneur (IMO)! I'm looking for people to review the article and help me with making sure the formatting is correct.

I'm also wondering how I can contribute or link the Martin Nordegg article to Wikiproject Alberta. Is there a way I could do that? Is it within the scope of this project? Thanks! Genoah77 (talk) 05:20, 29 August 2016 (UTC)

Hi Genoah77. The article is within the scope of WikiProject Alberta and linked to it by way of the WikiProject Canada template applied at the top of Talk:Martin Nordegg. Please note my edit summary here about using the term "town" to describe Nordegg. Cheers, Hwy43 (talk) 08:21, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

New 10,000 Challenge for Canada

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Canada/The 10,000 Challenge is up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge for the UK which has currently produced over 2200 article improvements and creations. If you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Canada like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1300 articles in 3 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for Canada but fuelled by a contest such as The North America Destubathon to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. I would like some support from Canadian wikipedians here to get the Challenge off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile! Cheers.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:24, 10 November 2016 (UTC)

Nolan Crouse

Is anyone from this WikiProject familiar with Nolan Crouse? A thread was started at WP:BLPN#Wikipedia Nolan Crouse by an IP claiming to be Crouse himself about some derogatory info being added to the article. The article itself seems a bit promotional to begin with and has some other problems as well, but these are things which can be cleaned up through some editing. I'm not sure, however, if simply being a local mayor is sufficient for WP:NPOL and whether the content being disputed is actually a BLP vio, or factual but perhaps WP:UNDUE. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:33, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

Nolan Crouse has been the subject of controversy from many squeaky wheels, rightly or wrongly, in St. Albert for a number of years. There were two sentences that were probably the source of concern, which appear to now be fixed by Marchjuly. He is entitled to an article as I recall consensus that mayors of muncipalities with a population of 50,000 or more are assumed notable. Hwy43 (talk) 07:16, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for input Hwy43. I did a bit of cleanup and reorganizing, but more needs to be done. I'm not too well versed in Canadian politics and have been relying on the few sources I've been able to find on Crouse. If he's notable as a mayor, then feel free to remove the notability tag I added. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:44, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
I see that, Marchjuly. Looks like we are stepping on each other's toes as some of my edits have been reverted, albeit inadvertently no doubt. Can you review the edit history and fix please? Hwy43 (talk) 07:47, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
Sorry about that Hwy43. I'll step back now so feel free to change anything I may have removed by mistake. One thing I was thinking of doing was further dividing up the background section, but since there are more eyes on the article now, I'll leave that to others to work on. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:50, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:25, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.
