End of Year Charts[edit]

Why is it that the end of year charts only go through to 1992? The ARIA website have all singles / albums charts since 1988 (although they only need to be done from 1993 onwards) so why not add that to the little template down the bottom of relevant pages? I will be happy to type up the articles in the wikitable per all the other ones done so far and as we speak I am currently typing the top 100 singles for 2008. Might have to go back to 1988. See List of Top 25 albums for 1988 in Australia and compare with ARIA - End of Year Charts - Top 50 Albums 1988. Discrepancies exist because wiki article uses Kent Music Report which has been superseded for 1988 onwards. We will have to change references to cite the ARIA page - do you want the table extended to Top 50? If so, article title will have to be changed too. This also explains why the articles stop at 1992: that's where Kent's 'Big Yellow' book ends. EoY 2008[edit]

Here's en example of one I've already done, typed up in my sandbox. User:Gibbsyspin/Sandbox/List_of_Top_25_singles_for_2008_in_Australia. Do you want the other ones to be the same sort of template. Yeah, check your article history: I've been bold and already had a tweak. I see you're only doing Top 25, this is consistent with previously existing articles, seems the way to go. How do you determine 'Notable exclusions'? Previous EoY articles have no such section. If you keep the section, you'll need refs for the information in each example given.
For the peak position and weeks at #1, I assume you're doing a search per individual single at the Australian Charts Portal? Or do you have some other, faster way to find this info?Shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 19:50, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Well done on your edits and being bold Shaidar, you've definitely cleaned things up and made it easier for me.
  • "Notable exclusions" I put on as a sort of extension to the article, or else it was a bit plain. I put in there singles that had gone top 5, and or stayed in the charts for a prolonged amount of time, e.g. Don't Hold Back. I realise these are not consistent with the previous EoY articles and it would be pretty tedious to go back and figure out notable exclusions for every year back to 1955. The section is on the chopping board I guess, however the article is still only in my sandbox so it can be chopped and changed as much as need be.
  • And yes, I manually looked up the charts stats for each single individually from the Australian charts portal which is a great tool and can be referenced seeing as ARIA let them publish the charts. It is once again a demanding job to do it manually however as I know of know quicker way that might just have to be the go.

Gibbsyplan(tm) proposal[edit]

I propose that we use the 2008 EoY singles article as our Gibbsyplan(tm) and divide the work into sections according to seven years each:

  1. Gibbsy can take 2002–2008
  2. Dan arndt onto 1995–2001
  3. Shaidar cuebiyar onto 1988–1994

  • Exactly the era I would have picked for myself. Am a bit of a young gun.
  • As for how you've tweaked my original article, I'm really happy with what you've done and will convert it to mainspace, but NOT BEFORE:
  • You agree with me when I say that the notable exclusions just can't go on all these other articles and I am now certain we have to let it go. Getting all the stats is enough but that would prove just too much IMO. Looking forward to working on this and seeing it all up there (remembering to edit the Australian charts template, which I don't really know how to do).

Highlight AUS?[edit]

Dan has asked whether we should highlight AUS hits in these lists.

My knee-jerk reaction is to say no. I've tried to see if there are equivalent lists for US/UK EoYs but haven't seen any. Something similar is List of Billboard Hot 100 top 10 singles in 2009 or Top 100 best-selling albums of the year. Neither highlights the US artists.

My main reason is that these lists are to indicate top 25 hit singles/albums on australian charts and not to openly blow the aussie trumpet - it seems less encyclopedic to me to highlight them and it maybe even be Non-NPOV.Shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 13:31, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Categories[edit]

Have just been using the old 'cut n paste' method but realise that the Categories that I have been using don't appear to be relevant to the album charts. Any suggestion as to a better fit that I can 'cut n paste' into the relevant articles. Dan arndt (talk) 01:43, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Had a look at your CATs and changed songs to albums. Also added a Record Charts 'plate. They should be better now. Use the songs CATs for the new singles lists you'll be making and add the 'plate there too.Shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 10:52, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Polyserena problem[edit]

In doing 2002 albums I found a problem with the ref for george's album Polyserena at Australian Charts Portal.

I tried <ref>{{cite web |url=http://australian-charts.com/showitem.asp?interpret=George+[AU]&titel=Polyserena&cat=a|title=George <nowiki>[AU] - Polyserena|publisher=Australian Charts Portal|date=2009-02-22|accessdate=2009-02-23}}</ref></nowiki>

I used a nowiki in the title but the url uses square brackets to distinguish 'George [AU]' from the Swiss 'George' (Aside: sounds like they would be cheesy). But it spits out as:[1]

You can see that this disrupts the reference when it is coughed up by wiki editor and does not allow the link to be checked by a casual reader. I've posted a query at User talk:Smith609/Cite but don't know if there's anywhere else I can go to get the url checked/adjusted.
