Need standardization

[edit]

We need to standardize the format/subsections of the following articles:

We also need to decide where we put the "Notable people" list. Should this be repeated in Division, District and Upazila article? Arman (Talk) 06:49, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Usingha started to work on standardizing upazilas articles (and a Dhaka thanas map) quite some time back. I worked on the Abhaynagar Upazila article hoping that a standard would emerge. The geography stub instruction (visible at Talk:Bagherpara Upazila) tries to do the same (the template looks a bit oversized, no?). Aditya(talkcontribs) 09:26, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and may be we can include:
as well. Let's start a collaboration right away, like the Bangladesh Liberation War collaboration. Aditya(talkcontribs) 14:19, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I totally agree some inspiritational work has been done on the upazila articles especially by Usingha. However, higher level administrative divisions (i.e. divisions and districts) are still not in very good shape. Arman (Talk) 05:20, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Let's identify 5 articles from each of the categories, start working on them, and see what is required. Much of the Wikipedia has developed organically, much more is still work in progress. May be that's the way to go. We'll develop one set of standards at the first go, try and implement it to as many articles possible until we hit trouble or fresh opportunities, and then we evolve the standard and go back to the articles already worked upon... Say what? Aditya(talkcontribs) 14:02, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's a good idea. It can work that way. Arman (Talk) 03:16, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you all. Dear Aditya Kabir please go on for Abhaynagar Upazila, and we will follow this article as a model. I also checked stub: Talk:Bagherpara Upazila to improve our Upazila articles. I have following ideas and sources to improve our articles or stubs.
Finally, if we may, we can create Union Parishad articles like Union Councils of Pakistan & Category:Union_Councils_of_Pakistan. I have the data from BBS (Census 1991), and I created for Bishnupriya Manipuri wikipedia for example bpy:বাংলাদেশর ইউনিয়নগি & bpy:আলীনগর ইউনিয়ন, কমলগঞ্জ. Thanks again for your apprication.--Usingha (talk) 15:16, 25 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Starting fresh

[edit]

As far as I understand, the current proposal is that we develop standards for the following:

There is a proposal to identify one article each from the categories in discussion. Abhaynagar Upazila has been used as an example. There also is useful guideline applicable to most geography artciles:

To contribute in upgrading this stub article to start class, the following sections need to be created:

  1. History (including: History during the Liberation War)
  2. Geography (including: Location, Landmarks and Environment)
  3. Demography (including: Ethnography and Famous people)
  4. Administration (including: Current Administration)
  5. Economy (including: Employment, Industry, Agriculture and Commerce)
  6. Infrastructure (including: Transport, Health and Education)
  7. Image (including: photographs and maps)

The final leg of the proposal is to upgrade all statistics to a later census report. Well I already had posted the following on Wikipedia:Notice board for Bangladesh-related topics, and therefore could not agree more.

It is stated at Wikipedia:Geographic references#Bangladesh that "On this wiki, we will use the Third Population Census of Bangladesh, which was conducted by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics on 12, 13, 14 and 15 March, 1991 because the latest census data is not realesed online yet." But, Population census 2001: national report (provisional) has been made available at the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics website. Do we make use of it now? This newer data will require massive changes in all upazila and district articles.

Finally, I would like to add three more points to the proposal:

  • Let's also keep using the older census report (available here), as not all the data are common to both the reports. For some critical info we may still need the older report.
  • May be, we need to develop the core articles on the subdivisions, like Districts of Bangladesh or List of cities and towns in Bangladesh, first and then move on to the standardizing part.
  • We can, of course, keep working on the individual rivers and towns and unions in the mean time. That would help us to identify the benchmark articles as well.

Thanas of the metros (Dhaka and Chittagong in particular), other waterbodies (beels, haors, waterfalls, water tanks), as well as other geographic entities (mountains, mahallas, forests) need some attention as well. But, I am sure, that would come later. Cheers. Aditya(talkcontribs) 17:37, 25 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Post Script Uttam, my dear, the union info link in bpy wikipedia isn't working. Can you check on what happened? Aditya(talkcontribs) 17:37, 25 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

copyediting the prose

[edit]

I stumbled upon one of the upazila articles, and noted that the English is a bit in need of tweaking. I'm happy to help -- maybe it's too late, as I gather these were created by bot, but if there's a way to correct the errors in sort of a viral form... Is the article on Abhaynagar Upazila still going to be used as a template? If so, I'll just make adjustments there.

Note: I'm capable of doing style and grammar, but not content at the moment. atakdoug (talk) 20:40, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Update: I worked on Abhaynagar Upazila, in case you are still using that as a basis for replication. It's not perfect yet, in part because in some spots I can't tell what the author meant. But it's better. Meanwhile, if there's somewhere else I should be doing this, please tell me. It'd be a lot more efficient to get it right the first time, than to have to rewrite each article. atakdoug (talk) 21:11, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

[edit]

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Geography of Bangladesh

[edit]

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! Coordinators' working group

[edit]

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 05:30, 28 February 2009 (UTC) [reply]
