Chicago Barnstar needs repair

Important-a bot deleted the image for the Template:ChicagoBarnstar. Could someone fix this? Thanks --Funandtrvl (talk) 00:24, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

I think the problem was at commons where the barnstar had no category. I have requested that the image be replaced and suggested categories.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 00:53, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
File:Barnstar Chicago.png has been restored at commons and the barnstar is working again.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 00:58, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks again for fixing it! --Funandtrvl (talk) 01:57, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 05:06, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Good job on the re-write. You may wish to contact those who have already voiced opinions now that the article has been rewritten. Otherwise, you may need to point out at DRV that a bunch of "votes" came in before the re-write.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 03:24, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

An Area for Detailing Chicago Project Processes

I would like to see the Chicago Project article have a section that details additional processes (e.g., how to request that an article be marked as a Top importance article. I saw the instructions on getting consensus before marking an article as a Top importance article, but I can't seem to find the process for it. So, I think the main project place might be the right area within which to place all the processes. --Pknkly (talk) 04:33, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

New Streetmaps for Community areas of Chicago

I have been adding new streetmaps for some of the Community areas of Chicago. See Loop, Chicago, Near South Side, Chicago, Hyde Park, Chicago, Kenwood, Chicago and Washington Park, Chicago (neighborhood). Unfortunately, I am limited by my hardware. I have one laptop that has a max screen resultion of 1600x1200 and another with a max of 1680x1050. The new maps (discussed two weeks ago at Signpost) provide all street names if we can get a high enough zoom level map. Near North Side, Chicago is an example of how my limitaitions kept me from creating a map with all streetnames because it is too tall to be imaged in 1200 pixels at the minimum zoom level for streetname detail zoom level. Woodlawn, Chicago is one that is too wide. Does anyone have access to a high resolution screeen computer and want to help create the images for the maps of large areas.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 07:54, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

New Content Item for Chicago Parks?

I would like to suggest a new item be added to the contents of Chicago Parks pages. Something titled "Restrictions and Ordinances," or something like that, would be great to be able to see if dogs are allowed, if grilling is allowed, if there are specific hours the park is open that differ from general CPD hours, etc.

This would be helpful.

Thanks,

GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. With ~1,300 articles left to review, we would appreciate any editors that could contribute in helping to uphold the quality of GAs. If you have any questions about the process, reviewing, or need help with a particular article, please contact me or OhanaUnited and we'll be happy to help. --Happy editing! Changes to popular pages lists

There are a few important changes to the popular pages system. A quick summary:

  • The "importance" ranking (for projects that use it) will be included in the lists along with assessment.
  • The default list size has been lowered to 500 entries (from 1000)
  • I've set up a project on the Toolserver for the popular pages - tools:~alexz/pop/.
    • This includes a page to view the results for projects, including the in-progress results from the current month. Currently this can only show the results from a single project in one month. Features to see multiple projects or multiple months may be added later.
    • This includes a new interface for making requests to add a new project to the list.
    • There is also a form to request a change to the configuration for a project. Currently the configurable options are the size of the on-wiki list and the project subpage used for the list.
  • The on-wiki list should be generated and posted in a more timely and consistent manner than before.
  • The data is now retained indefinitely.
  • The script used to generate the pages has changed. The output should be the same. Please report any apparent inconsistencies (see below).
  • Bugs and feature requests should be reported using the Toolserver's bug tracker for "alexz's tools" - [1]

Scope of project best represented by Chicago metropolitan area

With all the metro related articles {{e.g., Barrington, Illinois, Hawthorne Derby, Hazel Crest (Metra), etc.) being assigned to the project the Chicago article no longer adequately represents the scope of the project. We need to either scale back on the articles being assigned to the project, which would be in keeping with the scope as represented by the article on Chicago, or adopt the Chicago metropolitan area article as the best one that defines the scope of the project. Scope of this project

Are all people who have attended the University of Chicago considered to be within the scope of WikiProject Chicago? I ask in particular with regard to George Cressey, who has been tagged a couple of times by bots now, despite having no interaction with Chicago other than attending the University. Do members of the project general consider such people to be within the project's scope? Thanks. Cool3 (talk) 01:12, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Generally, we consider all articles containing a category at WP:CHIBOTCATS within the scope of the project. Occasionally, this is an annoyance to some people (less than a dozen of about 20,000 articles over the course of two years). However, in those cases the bot can be instructed not to tag the article by a {{nobots}} template on the article talk page.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 02:42, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
If this is necessary, please don't use {{nobots}} (which will deny all exclusion-compliant bots), instead, use {{Bots|deny=Xenobot Mk V}}. Thanks! –xenotalk 14:15, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

Yes, all alumni and faculty, of schools within Chicago or Chicagoland are within the scope of our Project. By the way, I set the Chicago Project assessment parameters for your article. Was your frustration due to us not setting the assessment parameters, especially for an article rated by other projects as a GA, than actually having the Chicago Project template on the talk page? Pknkly (talk) 17:45, 5 September 2009 (UTC)
I wouldn't say that I was really "frustrated" at all. I was just rather surprised to find that such an article would be considered within the scope. If WP:CHICAGO wants to include such articles, then more power to you. Cool3 (talk) 03:34, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

Hello, this is a Chicago based organization new article. Where can I find new articles for Chicago? Ikip (talk) 02:46, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Don't know how to find new articles for our Project. Do you know of any projects that do give a list of new articles that fall under their scope (say new articles assigned to the project within the last seven days) ? The reason the article was not assigned to our Project was because it did not have a category by which the article would have been assigned to our project. For the list of categories by which articles are assigned to the Chicago Project please see Wikipedia:WikiProject Chicago/Bot Category List. I added the Category:Organizations based in Chicago, Illinois category and I also added the Chicago Project banner, with the assessment parameters filled in, to the talk page of the article. Thanks for your contribution. Pknkly (talk) 20:01, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

Student Project on WikiProject Chicago

Hello everyone. I am a teacher at Robert Lindblom Math & Science Academy. You will be seeing some new additions by two of my History of Chicago classes on this WikiProject in the coming weeks. Please be gentle with them with your feedback if you evaluate one of their articles. Their Wikipedia user names are listed on my user page. MrSilva (talk) 14:43, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the notice. Could you possibly post a list of the articles they edit? I can put them all on my watchlist and help out if their changes are ruthlessly reverted. Have you checked out Wikipedia:School and university projects? Zagalejo^^^ 19:40, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
I too offer my service. Please let each of them know they have lots of article related to Chicago History. I suggest they start off with the History of Chicago and then use the category category:History of Chicago, Illinois to find the other articles related to the history of Chicago. Hope they can get to the point in their understanding about navigatin and working with Wiki that they can look for for or validate references. I noticed the History of Chicago has the category category:Articles with unsourced statements from February 2007, but I could not find the part in the article that is unsourced. Maybe you students can help? Pknkly (talk) 03:37, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
As I understand it, each student or student group will be attempting to improve an article on WP during the course of the project. Thus, having the whole class cleanup History of Chicago is not the goal. During the summer, I gave MrSilva numerous ideas, which it seems he is using for a field of articles for his students to choose from.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 03:52, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
My students are in the process of selecting topics. I hope to have a fairly complete list by next week which I will post. They are going to be working on individual articles that they are interested in with the only requirement being that they relate to Chicago. Baby steps first and then we'll see later on if we want to tackle a larger project as a group. Thanks everyone for your help. MrSilva (talk) 16:09, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

Merge the Canaryville Article

I am aware that this has already been argued to no avail, however, I think it should be reconsidered. Besides that Canaryville is not a substantial enough to warrant its own stand-alone article, the idea of removing it from the New City area violates the officially recognized neighborhood layout of Chicago that's still in place for over 80 years. For a more indepth reasoning, to weigh in, please go here.Ryecatcher773 (talk) 02:45, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

Hollydale?

I noticed that we have an article on a neighborhood called Hollydale, but I can't find any firm evidence that such a neighborhood ever existed. Does anyone know anything about this? An IP once left some comments about the neighborhood on the article's talk page, but they don't make much sense to me. First, he says that Hollydale is/was near the Howard stop on the L, but then he starts talking about Woodlawn, which is a totally different part of the city. Any help would be appreciated. Zagalejo^^^ 05:27, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

The reference in the article seems to refer to a housing development in Ohio according to this page. I would prod the page.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 05:50, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
Aye. And to make things more complicated, the original version of the article said that the neighborhood was in Philadelphia. Zagalejo^^^ 05:53, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
I nominated it for deletion, since the housing development in Ohio may be notable, and I'd like to attract some extra eyes. Zagalejo^^^ 06:13, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

WP:CHIFTD progress

Crown Fountain was just promoted to WP:FA. This gives us three FAs in the topic. We need five to achieve a WP:FT according to the current guidelines. McDonald's Cycle Center will be renominated as soon as my Trump International Hotel and Tower (Chicago) nomination clears the system one way or another. If it passes, we will only need one more promotion to achieve an FT. The most likely FAs, IMO, are Millennium Park and Jay Pritzker Pavilion. Come help us out.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 22:44, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Continental Bank -- any interest

Hi Chicagoans, I was thinking of working on the article Continental Illinois. Continental's failure in 1984 is of particular historical interest because it was the first Too Big To Fail bank -- an issue that's very much in the news right now. I was wondering 1) if anyone had a picture -- it apparently still says Continental Illinois Bank on the beautiful old headquarter on LaSalle Street across from CBOT and the Chicago Fed? -- and 2) if anyone was interested in a bit of collaboration on the article? I don't have the sources to do much on the history of the bank, but could handle all the economics and ramifications of its failure which would be a big part of the article. --JayHenry (talk) 04:06, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

  • I don't have time to work on the article but I do have pictures (or can take a new one if my existing photos don't work). Also, I am pretty sure I have some old papers with the Continental logo from that era that I could scan. As for the history, there is a brief history on the Encyclopedia of Chicago that is already cited in the Wikipedia article but contains more information than is included in the article. -- DS1953 talk 17:38, 7 December 2009 (UTC)

WP:CHIFTD now has four WP:FAs. It needs five to become an WP:FT. Jay Pritzker Pavilion has FA-quality content, but needs a copyedit and reorganization. I am having trouble responding tho the current WP:PR at Wikipedia:Peer review/Jay Pritzker Pavilion/archive1‎ because I am not that great an organizer of articles outside of my expertise. Would anyone be interested in getting on board an article for an FA credit as a co-author.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 15:11, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

Topic Dirve

If we get Millennium Park to WP:FT, I am open to suggestions for topic drives. I am contemplating the prospects for Old Chicago Water Tower District, Chicago Water Tower, Chicago Avenue Pumping Station as a topic. I am not sure whether it would be complete without Chicago Fire Department Fire Station No. 98. and whether Magnificent Mile Chicago Avenue or Michigan Avenue are part of the topic. I have to get a determination on the topic range from WT:FTQ.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 21:40, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

GA reassessment of Fall Out Boy

I have conducted a reassessment of the above article as part of the GA Sweeps process. I have found some concerns which you can see at Talk:Fall Out Boy/GA1. I have placed the article on hold whilst these are fixed. Thanks. Jezhotwells (talk) 15:54, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Faculty at University of Chicago

I've noticed that a bot is tagging University of Chicago faculty such as Fernando Alvarez and John H. Cochrane with the WP:Chicago tag. Do they fall into the scope of the project? --CronopioFlotante (talk) 20:58, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

Photo request

Hello,

I am currently working on bringing Schwa (restaurant) up to GA status and could really use a picture of the building's exterior. It is located at 1466 N. Ashland, Chicago IL 60662. The is a shiny new barnstar available to whomever sacrifices their time & gas to get this photo for me. Thanks in advance, ThaddeusB (talk) 01:05, 7 December 2009 (UTC)

Hey I just came here to post that request! ChildofMidnight (talk) 06:47, 7 December 2009 (UTC)

Maybe somebody in this wikiproject can help out with some info on this place. It has been nominated for deletion. looks like it will be kept, but maybe somebody in this wikiproject can uncover some information about it. Thanks TheWeakWilled (T * G) 00:22, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

Photos of the chocolates and boutique store would be helpful. (It's part of the bacon challenge which is why it's being worked up in Userspace for a March 1 debut...) ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:16, 12 December 2009 (UTC)

I'm wondering if we should move Garfield Park Conservatory, Chicago to Garfield Park (Chicago park) (or something like that), and rearrange some things in the lead, since most of the article is about the park as a whole, not just the conservatory. The entire park is on the NRHP, so we should also change the infobox to reflect that.

I do think it's possible to have two separate articles: one about the whole park, and a spinout about the conservatory. But we don't need to split things at the moment; one page is enough for the information we currently have. And the title of that page should accurately reflect the contents within.

Thoughts? Zagalejo^^^ 08:10, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

Those sound like good ideas. Are you interested in making these changes yourself?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 08:22, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
Just did it now. Zagalejo^^^ 08:58, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

Found a high resolution blueprint for a building in Chicago.[2] Virtually no other information available. Was this ever built? Durova386 18:24, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

I did a search on the 1849-1986 Chicago Tribune database on the Chicago Public Library website for "Union Produce Exchange" and got no results, although without the quotes I got 103 results.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 19:02, 19 December 2009 (UTC)--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 19:02, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
It doesn't seem like it was ever built. There's a brief bit of info on the proposed plan in Public Markets, by Helen Tangires (Norton, 2008; pg. 267). If you have an Amazon account, you should be able to view that page. Zagalejo^^^ 21:06, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. Would be encyclopedic for the Blueprint article then, but probably not anywhere else. Durova386 22:49, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Trump International Hotel and Tower (Chicago)/archive3

The current FAC at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Trump International Hotel and Tower (Chicago)/archive3 is getting fairly mature. We just finally overcame an oppose from one of the toughest reviewers on WP, but need some supports to get the article approved.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 14:54, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
