Slanderous Content

I am reviewing old content that was pitched as a public relations ploy to destroy character based on chicago press related slander. "WITCH HUNTS'. Any content that I see that is reflective of that I will attempt to change and correct. Richard M. Daley good article drive

The coast is clear at a top-importance Chicago article. Hi all. I've attempted some furtive stabs at this article in the past, and was always very frustrated by the lightening-quick reverts, which I strongly suspected but could not prove were related to a stable of a dozen taxpayer-funded PR firms, many with active online practices. Well, lately, things have changed. It's a huge project touching on decades of Chicago history and will require many related articles, please pick a chunk and dive in, Maggie, the schools take-over, Hired Truck, the parking meter deal, the environmental record, more... Radio station confusion

I'm struggling to make sense of some radio stations. We have an article on Nine FM and one on WKIF. The 9FM article says that the 9FM format was ended in 2008, while the WKIF says the format was rebooted in 2008. I was hoping some Chicagoans could clarify whether Nine FM is still broadcasting on WKIF, or if WKIF is doing something else. Thanks, D O N D E groovily Talk to me 03:49, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Streeterville

I need another set of eyes on the recent edits at Streeterville. I don't want to war with someone outside of my area of expertise, but I am not entirely comfortable with the wholesale changes that have been made recently. It seems OK. The gun running allegations are backed up in a number of secondary sources, though I'd like to know the primary source for that information. I do question why someone claiming to be removing POV would remove the fact that he was a civil war veteran, which isn't disputed in any of the sources that I have looked at so far. —Jeremy (talk) 16:30, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

Well, 'OK' is a relative term—there's certainly room for improvement, but I don't think it bad enough to just do a straight revert of the edits. There's actually quite a lot of room for improvement in that whole section of the article, as well as in the main George Streeter article. There's a lot of "that is what Streeter claimed, but actually this is the truth", where what is being presented as truth is actually the opinion of one or more historians, and so should be presented as opinions in the article (even naming the people whose opinion is being presented). As far as I can see pretty much every secondary source about Streeter is biased either for or against him, so we don't really have any hope of presenting a definitive account of that part of Streeterville's history—in such cases I prefer to try to present both sides of the story and allow the reader to decide.—Jeremy (talk) 18:04, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

Roy Lichtenstein Retrospective

The largest ever Roy Lichtenstein retrospective opens here at the Art Institute of Chicago on the 13th for members and the 16th for the public. It will also travel to National Gallery of Art, the Tate Modern and Centre Pompidou. Wikipedia only had one Lichtenstein painting before I created 4 last night. I could use some help building these up and some others. I think other important works include Crying Girl and Drowning Girl. In addition, I Can See the Whole Room...and There's Nobody in It! sold for $43,202,500 in November 2011 and Ohhh...Alright... sold for $42.6 million in November 2010. He had an Untitled Composition sell for $10,162,500 May 12, 2010. They must be important. He has lots of works that have sold for several million without articles. Current severe backlogs - you can help!

I noticed that we currently have two severe backlogs in both Category:Unassessed Chicago articles (~2,000 articles!) and Category:Unknown-importance Chicago articles (~15,000 articles!). I've tagged both and created a progress bar on our main project page to track the progress we make towards clearing them. Does this really qualified as a WP article?

This 'article' isn't anything more than a list of places (most of which don't have WP articles of their own) that are in in the Bridgeport neighborhood. It reads more like a Yellow Pages, and doesn't do a whole lot for anyone who would be accessing the article that it is linked to unless they needed to order a sandwich or see a Catholic school/church in the area (the latter of these are already covered in other lists/articles on WP). Wow, that really slipped through the cracks! I don't think it stands a chance of surviving AFD. Schools and churches are worth mentioning, but there's plenty of room for that kind of material at the main Bridgeport article (and as you said, much of it is there already). Expressway vs. Freeway

About a month and a half ago, I moved the article Roads and freeways in Chicago to Roads and expressways in Chicago only to have it moved back by a Wikipedian from Michigan who cited 'over redirects' as the reason for reverting my move. As I have stated on the talk page of that article 'expressway' and 'freeway' are regionalisms, and in fact 'freeway' is redirected to Controlled-access highway. Not to mention, there are also templates that are Chicago specific and categories that use the term 'expressway'. There isn't any legitimate reason (other than basic laziness) that moving the article to a title using 'expressway' is problematic. I would encourage any party involved with WikiProject Chicago to get involved on that page I mentioned earlier. It's a Chicago-related article on a Chicago-related topic, and it shouldn't be mislabeled (after an attempt to fix was made) simply because someone unfamiliar with Chicago has a personal issue with it. I have heard people use the term "Chicago-style thin crust", although I don't know if there's any universal definition for what that means. The article says something about the "consistency of the crust and the quantity and choice of the tomato sauce", but even within Chicago, such things vary from restaurant to restaurant, in my experience. Davis Theater and the History Collections at Sulzer Library

Just added an article on a local movie theater in the Lincoln Square area that has some history-- looking to get this to DYK next. Apparently, there were lots of other theaters in the area that have since been demolished. I'm heading to an historical archive (the Northside Neighborhood History Collection) that's at Conrad Sulzer Regional Library this week to check things out. They have a lot of older photos and records from the North Side of Chicago, some of which is in the public domain. Two navboxes for museums

FYI, there are two navboxes in use for Chicago museums: Template:Museums in Chicago, and Template:Chicago mci (museums and cultural institutions). We don't really need both. Anyone have suggestions on what to do with these? Zagalejo^^^ 23:03, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

I created {{Museums in Chicago}} on 06:21, 11 December 2012‎ and {{Chicago mci}} was created on 08:37, 3 January 2013‎ by Kjkjl555 (talk · contribs). I forgot to deploy mine until recently. About 75% of mine are on his. Not sure what percent of his are on mine. His is fancier, but I think mine is more consistent with the format used for other cities at Category:Museum navigational boxes when I created it. I don't have a problem with the extra feature his has (division by type of institution). I am just not sure if his distinctions are clear cut and/or sourced. He also created an infobox for St. Louis institutions. What format do we want to go with? How should we proceed?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 23:46, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

I think we should use your template, and add any museums that are missing (or at least the blue-linked museums). "Cultural institutions" is a very broad concept, which could be defined to include theaters, schools, and even restaurants and sports organizations. Zagalejo^^^ 05:52, 6 March 2013 (UTC)

I agree with your "yes" list. I'm not sure what to say about the zoos and botanic gardens. The museum article does count such organizations as museums. I agree with not including Prairie Avenue and the Copernicus Foundation. I don't know enough about the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts to comment about that one. I'm leaning "no" for Chicago Cultural Center; it's more of an "exhibit space" than what I'd consider a museum. Support inclusion of botanic/zoological, cultural, historical and architectural see List of museums and cultural institutions in Chicago#Museums, it would also make sense organize them the way the list does. The cultural center also archives and exhibits for its collection, so that should also be included. The two houses that are open for visitor education, like those on Prairie Avenue (Glessener and Clarke) should also be included, as should Robie House and James Charnley House and Hull House. No objection to separating the museums from other types of CI in its own nav box but the nav box would be more useful for people, if they were listed by subject matter. I don't think we would have Prarie Avenue but the museum houses should be there. I don't think the Copernicus Foundation or Graham are museums. I do not mind limiting it by historical importance but I don't think limiting it by subject is good (eg. zoological/botanical are museums). I'm in agreement on the yes and no lists per the list above from Tony. I also support including the Chicago Cultural Center and Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, as they both have year-round exhibitions and galleries, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago because of the Money Museum. Lincoln Park Conservatory seems like it'd be better classified in a botanical gardens kind of fashion rather than a museum. Does anyone know the current number of schools in the Chicago Public Schools system? The only statistics I can find on the CPS website come from last year. Mead Junior High

Please see Mead Junior High. I gather that this is a junior high school in Chicago. The page contained a redirect to Community Consolidated School District 54, but it also contained several sections worth of content. I removed the redirect, resulting in a page that does not have sufficient context to identify the subject. If more content can be added, the page may become an article. Otherwise, it would probably be best to restore the redirect and remove all other content. (Redirects with additional, invisible content cause problems for various editing tools.) Harriet F. Rees House

I just saw today that Chicago intends to move the Chicago Landmark/NRHP Harriet F. Rees House, one of the few remaining buildings from the Prairie Avenue district. I know that the site has been sought be developers looking to build a hotel, since the lot is close to McCormick Place. Anyone have any insight on where the house is headed?
