Slanderous Content

I am reviewing old content that was pitched as a public relations ploy to destroy character based on chicago press related slander. "WITCH HUNTS'. Any content that I see that is reflective of that I will attempt to change and correct. A sa community journaist for 25 years..the political condemnations and the historical natives that contribute to that junk journaistic stye must stop. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Seancik (talkcontribs) 03:59, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Um... what? 25 years in journalism seems a suspect claim, given your complete lack of clarity in explaining to us what exactly you're even talking about... let alone the issues of spelling and punctuation. Just saying. Ryecatcher773 (talk) 06:31, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

WikiWomen's History Month

Hi everyone. March is Women's History Month and I'm hoping a few folks here at WP:Chicago will have interest in putting on events (on and off wiki) related to women's roles in Chicago's history, society and culture. We've created an event page on English Wikipedia (please translate!) and I hope you'll find the inspiration to participate. These events can take place off wiki, like edit-a-thons, or on wiki, such as themes and translations. Please visit the page here: WikiWomen's History Month. Thanks for your consideration and I look forward to seeing events take place! SarahStierch (talk) 00:01, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Richard M. Daley good article drive

The coast is clear at a top-importance Chicago article. Hi all. I've attempted some furtive stabs at this article in the past, and was always very frustrated by the lightening-quick reverts, which I strongly suspected but could not prove were related to a stable of a dozen taxpayer-funded PR firms, many with active online practices. Well, lately, things have changed. It's a huge project touching on decades of Chicago history and will require many related articles, please pick a chunk and dive in, Maggie, the schools take-over, Hired Truck, the parking meter deal, the environmental record, more... Thanks! Hugh (talk) 00:19, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Haymarket affair Good Article reassessment

Haymarket affair, which is listed as part of this WikiProject, has been nominated for a community reassessment to determine if it meets the good article criteria and so can be listed as a good article. Radio station confusion

I'm struggling to make sense of some radio stations. We have an article on Nine FM and one on WKIF. The 9FM article says that the 9FM format was ended in 2008, while the WKIF says the format was rebooted in 2008. I was hoping some Chicagoans could clarify whether Nine FM is still broadcasting on WKIF, or if WKIF is doing something else. Thanks, D O N D E groovily Talk to me 03:49, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Where I am (the NW side of Chicago), 92.7 is progressive talk radio [1], with dance music at night [2]. Zagalejo^^^ 04:12, 3 April 2012 (UTC)
The 9FM format might still exist in the Kankakee area, though. See [3]. I can't seem to find any sort of a website for that station, though. Zagalejo^^^ 04:20, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Streeterville

I need another set of eyes on the recent edits at Streeterville. I don't want to war with someone outside of my area of expertise, but I am not entirely comfortable with the wholesale changes that have been made recently. (Maybe JeremyA (talk · contribs) or Zagalejo (talk · contribs), but anyone would be fine)--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 05:38, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

It seems OK. The gun running allegations are backed up in a number of secondary sources, though I'd like to know the primary source for that information. I do question why someone claiming to be removing POV would remove the fact that he was a civil war veteran, which isn't disputed in any of the sources that I have looked at so far. —Jeremy (talk) 16:30, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
You say it is O.K., but then you have some substantive quibbles. I don't want anything removed or added that shouldn't be, but I'm not sure what to fight with the guy about.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 17:00, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
Well, 'OK' is a relative term—there's certainly room for improvement, but I don't think it bad enough to just do a straight revert of the edits. There's actually quite a lot of room for improvement in that whole section of the article, as well as in the main George Streeter article. There's a lot of "that is what Streeter claimed, but actually this is the truth", where what is being presented as truth is actually the opinion of one or more historians, and so should be presented as opinions in the article (even naming the people whose opinion is being presented). As far as I can see pretty much every secondary source about Streeter is biased either for or against him, so we don't really have any hope of presenting a definitive account of that part of Streeterville's history—in such cases I prefer to try to present both sides of the story and allow the reader to decide.—Jeremy (talk) 18:04, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
I've made a few small changes to the article to clean it up a little and keep it focussed on Streeterville rather than the good or the bad of Streeter himself. I'll try and revisit the article properly when I've had chance to do some more detailed reading.—Jeremy (talk) 18:30, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

Roy Lichtenstein Retrospective

The largest ever Roy Lichtenstein retrospective opens here at the Art Institute of Chicago on the 13th for members and the 16th for the public. It will also travel to National Gallery of Art, the Tate Modern and Centre Pompidou. Wikipedia only had one Lichtenstein painting before I created 4 last night. I could use some help building these up and some others. I think other important works include Crying Girl and Drowning Girl. In addition, I Can See the Whole Room...and There's Nobody in It! sold for $43,202,500 in November 2011 and Ohhh...Alright... sold for $42.6 million in November 2010. He had an Untitled Composition sell for $10,162,500 May 12, 2010. They must be important. He has lots of works that have sold for several million without articles. Here are the million-plus sales from the first five pages of a Christies.com google site search: (The Ring (Roy Lichtenstein) ($3,401,000, 13 May 2008), Cherry Pie (Roy Lichtenstein) ($3,218,500, 10 November 2010), Girl in Mirror ($4,898,500, 10 November 2010), Girl in Water ($1,874,500, 11 - 12 May 2010), Anxious Girl (Study) ($1,142,500, 8 May 2012), Brushstroke (Roy Lichtenstein painting) ($2,322,500, 8 May 2012), Reflections on the Prom ($8,777,000, 13 May 2008), Coup de chapeau II ($2,841,000, 13 November 2007), Abstraction with Guitar ($1,808,000, 15 November 2006), Interior with Painting and Still Life ($4,562,500, 8 November 2011), Collage for Nude with Red Shirt ($4,104,792, 30 June 2010), Drawing for Kiss V ($2,098,500, 11 May 2011)). This of course ignores Sotheby's and those held in collections that don't sell.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 01:40, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

Current severe backlogs - you can help!

I noticed that we currently have two severe backlogs in both Category:Unassessed Chicago articles (~2,000 articles!) and Category:Unknown-importance Chicago articles (~15,000 articles!). I've tagged both and created a progress bar on our main project page to track the progress we make towards clearing them. I'll be working to clear these backlogs, and I'd encourage any members of this project and other interested parties to help as well. Happy editing! elektrikSHOOS (talk) 04:12, 6 July 2012 (UTC)

Does this really qualified as a WP article?

This 'article' isn't anything more than a list of places (most of which don't have WP articles of their own) that are in in the Bridgeport neighborhood. It reads more like a Yellow Pages, and doesn't do a whole lot for anyone who would be accessing the article that it is linked to unless they needed to order a sandwich or see a Catholic school/church in the area (the latter of these are already covered in other lists/articles on WP). Ryecatcher773 (talk) 04:43, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

Wow, that really slipped through the cracks! I don't think it stands a chance of surviving AFD. Schools and churches are worth mentioning, but there's plenty of room for that kind of material at the main Bridgeport article (and as you said, much of it is there already). The rest probably violates WP:DIRECTORY. It's not like Jimmy John's is headquartered there. Zagalejo^^^ 06:22, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

Expressway vs. Freeway

About a month and a half ago, I moved the article Roads and freeways in Chicago to Roads and expressways in Chicago only to have it moved back by a Wikipedian from Michigan who cited 'over redirects' as the reason for reverting my move. As I have stated on the talk page of that article 'expressway' and 'freeway' are regionalisms, and in fact 'freeway' is redirected to Controlled-access highway. Not to mention, there are also templates that are Chicago specific and categories that use the term 'expressway'. There isn't any legitimate reason (other than basic laziness) that moving the article to a title using 'expressway' is problematic. I would encourage any party involved with WikiProject Chicago to get involved on that page I mentioned earlier. It's a Chicago-related article on a Chicago-related topic, and it shouldn't be mislabeled (after an attempt to fix was made) simply because someone unfamiliar with Chicago has a personal issue with it. Thank you. Ryecatcher773 (talk) 05:37, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

I have heard people use the term "Chicago-style thin crust", although I don't know if there's any universal definition for what that means. The article says something about the "consistency of the crust and the quantity and choice of the tomato sauce", but even within Chicago, such things vary from restaurant to restaurant, in my experience. Two navboxes for museums

I created {{Museums in Chicago}} on 06:21, 11 December 2012‎ and {{Chicago mci}} was created on 08:37, 3 January 2013‎ by Kjkjl555 (talk · contribs). I forgot to deploy mine until recently. About 75% of mine are on his. Not sure what percent of his are on mine. His is fancier, but I think mine is more consistent with the format used for other cities at Category:Museum navigational boxes when I created it. I don't have a problem with the extra feature his has (division by type of institution). I am just not sure if his distinctions are clear cut and/or sourced. He also created an infobox for St. Louis institutions. What format do we want to go with? How should we proceed?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 23:46, 5 March 2013 (UTC)
I think we should use your template, and add any museums that are missing (or at least the blue-linked museums). "Cultural institutions" is a very broad concept, which could be defined to include theaters, schools, and even restaurants and sports organizations. Zagalejo^^^ 05:52, 6 March 2013 (UTC)
I'll come up with a list of blue-linked items that his template has that are not on mine and we can evaluate which are museums and which are "cultural institutions".--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 17:49, 6 March 2013 (UTC)
Here is what I have: Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art, Chicago Cultural Center, Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio, Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, James Charnley House, Chicago Botanic Garden, Garfield Park Conservatory, Lincoln Park Conservatory, Morton Arboretum, Cuneo Museum, Noble-Seymour-Crippen House, Prairie Avenue, Copernicus Foundation, Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center, Mitchell Museum of the American Indian, Brookfield Zoo, Lincoln Park Zoo, John G. Shedd Aquarium and Money Museum are all on his template.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 22:55, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
So, what do you think? Zagalejo^^^ 01:08, 12 March 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, I missed your reply. Well. we have to decide which ones should be added to a list of museums. I think about half should.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 04:07, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
  1. Yes: Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art, Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio, James Charnley House, Cuneo Museum, Noble-Seymour-Crippen House, Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center, and Mitchell Museum of the American Indian.
  2. No: Chicago Botanic Garden, Garfield Park (Chicago park), Morton Arboretum, Prairie Avenue, Copernicus Foundation, Brookfield Zoo, Lincoln Park Zoo, and Shedd Aquarium
  3. Maybe: Chicago Cultural Center, Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, Lincoln Park Conservatory, and Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 04:18, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
I agree with your "yes" list. I'm not sure what to say about the zoos and botanic gardens. The museum article does count such organizations as museums. But the average reader probably wouldn't classify things that way. (If we do decide to include the "living museums", then I would add Lincoln Park Conservatory to the "yes" list, since it's a similar institution to the botanic gardens.) Zagalejo^^^ 05:38, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
I agree with not including Prairie Avenue and the Copernicus Foundation. I don't know enough about the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts to comment about that one. I'm leaning "no" for Chicago Cultural Center; it's more of an "exhibit space" than what I'd consider a museum. The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago does have the Money Museum, so I'm leaning "yes" on that one, but I would use a piped link in the navbox. Zagalejo^^^ 06:09, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
Still thinking about this, hoping for another opinion.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 15:38, 1 April 2013 (UTC)
Support inclusion of botanic/zoological, cultural, historical and architectural see List of museums and cultural institutions in Chicago#Museums, it would also make sense organize them the way the list does. The cultural center also archives and exhibits for its collection, so that should also be included. The two houses that are open for visitor education, like those on Prairie Avenue (Glessener and Clarke) should also be included, as should Robie House and James Charnley House and Hull House. No objection to separating the museums from other types of CI in its own nav box but the nav box would be more useful for people, if they were listed by subject matter. Are you saying you support the inclusion of all links at issue?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 00:55, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
I don't think we would have Prarie Avenue but the museum houses should be there. I don't think the Copernicus Foundation or Graham are museums. I do not mind limiting it by historical importance but I don't think limiting it by subject is good (eg. zoological/botanical are museums). Alanscottwalker (talk) 11:07, 16 April 2013 (UTC) Also, Garfield park is listed probably because that's where the Pedia covers the Garfield Park Conservatory, that should be a pipe link in the box, also yes to the Money Museum. -- Alanscottwalker (talk) 11:17, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

I will take a look at these one by one and see what consnesus is soon. Still wishing for more opinions.-TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 03:54, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

I'm in agreement on the yes and no lists per the list above from Tony. I also support including the Chicago Cultural Center and Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, as they both have year-round exhibitions and galleries, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago because of the Money Museum. Lincoln Park Conservatory seems like it'd be better classified in a botanical gardens kind of fashion rather than a museum. I, Jethrobot drop me a line (note: not a bot!) 18:59, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
And just to further clarify my opinion on some of these cultural entities, I don't consider zoos and horticultural exhibits to be considered museums. Checking over a few other listings of museums in other major cities, Los Angeles contains none of these types of , neither does this template for Pennsylvania nor does this list for San Francisco. Chicago Cultural Alliance

Related kind of. It's a shame we don't have articles on several of these institutions like the Chinese American Museum - is it lack of secondary sources do you think? Suggestions for sources here would be nice. Alanscottwalker (talk) 14:33, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

Some of those are pretty obscure, but I think a lot of them could support articles. The Irish American Heritage Center even appeared on Conan O'Brien! [8] Zagalejo^^^ 00:39, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

After some thought, I think I'm on the fence with regards to the Chicago Cultural Center. Do they have some sort of permanent collection? I haven't really spent much time there. Zagalejo^^^ 16:30, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
They have a curatorial staff that presents exhibitions (see eg. [9]). It is also a historic structure available for tours like the other historic structures on the list. [10].Alanscottwalker (talk) 12:17, 25 May 2013 (UTC)
I actually really like the categorization within the template for different types of cultural attractions, rather than the straight-up listing of all the museums in the template. The latter feels a bit too inaccessible, like a wall of links. I, Jethrobot drop me a line (note: not a bot!)

O.K. I don't think we can hope for any more feedback. I have made the final edits.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/WP:FOUR/WP:CHICAGO/WP:WAWARD) 23:15, 5 August 2013 (UTC)

Number of schools in Chicago Public Schools?

Does anyone know the current number of schools in the Chicago Public Schools system? The only statistics I can find on the CPS website come from last year. I know 50 schools were closed, but at least a few new schools were opened, so it's not a simple matter of subtraction. Thanks! Zagalejo^^^ 01:59, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

Spertus wasn't removed, just mis-categorized. I've placed it in the 'Culture' section. Here are reasons for the other changes:

College basketball team navigation templates

Please join the discussion at the College Basketball Wikiproject for forming a consensus on the creation of a basic navigation template for college basketball teams. Creation of these templates will impact articles on Chicago related teams such as DePaul and Northwestern. CrazyPaco (talk) 11:22, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

I have opened a review of the article's GA status at Talk:Illinois State Toll Highway Authority/GA2. Imzadi 1979  00:39, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

Mead Junior High

Please see Mead Junior High. I gather that this is a junior high school in Chicago. The page contained a redirect to Community Consolidated School District 54, but it also contained several sections worth of content. I removed the redirect, resulting in a page that does not have sufficient context to identify the subject. If more content can be added, the page may become an article. Otherwise, it would probably be best to restore the redirect and remove all other content. (Redirects with additional, invisible content cause problems for various editing tools.) Cnilep (talk) 03:55, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

The problem has been fixed by John from Idegon. Cnilep (talk) 05:06, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

Harriet F. Rees House

I just saw today that Chicago intends to move the Chicago Landmark/NRHP Harriet F. Rees House, one of the few remaining buildings from the Prairie Avenue district. I know that the site has been sought be developers looking to build a hotel, since the lot is close to McCormick Place. Anyone have any insight on where the house is headed?
