Request for comment: include "Furry Survey" as source?

There is a survey of the furry fandom called "Furry Survey" which is currently being discussed in Talk:Furry fandom. It has been determined that it does not meet Wikipedia's criteria as a reliable source, but we are discussing whether or not to use it anyway (with certain strict wording), invoking WP:IAR. Ursa Major Awards

FYI, Ursa Major Awards has now been deleted. Out of curiosity I made a Google Scholar search and found this Czech E-zin that appears to summarise science fiction literature for 2007. I have accordingly updated List of webcomic awards#Ursa Major Awards using that Ezine as a cite. Also, Google news search returns three sources that, in my non-expert opinion, might be used for a paragraph about these awards in Anthropomorphism. -84user (talk) 14:56, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

Confirmed. This is something of a borderline case, and would probably not qualify for the featured article bounty, but I'm willing to allow it for the good article bounty as a) the artist was definitely a member of furry fandom, and b) the article is in a main section of {{furry fandom}}. On reviewing the history of the article, I can see there has been one major contributor and several minor but significant contributors. $5 will be offered to each of Webwarlock, Craw-daddy and Bilby, and $35 (plus any unclaimed funds) to Turlo Lomon. Furry portal

Category and footer box reorganization

I've created Category:Furry role-playing games and Category:Furry fandom people, primarily to try and reduce clutter in Category:Furry fandom. There's a few more things that could perhaps be split off into subcategories if there were more of them (e.g. Funday PawPet Show/Rapid T. Rabbit and Friends). I'm not entirely sure what to do with Furcadia and the MUCKs, which could in theory be classified as RPGs but are really a different kind of animal - "multiplayer online social spaces". Furry comics template

I would agree with this, because all of the characters appear to be anthropomorphic animals. As the TMNT episode mentions, it covers "an alternate earth where animals and not humans became the dominant species". I removed Sam & Max for the same reason. Hmm. Well, this is interesting! Those stats are quite useful. Shows we need to look closer at articles like Usagi Yojimbo, Furcadia, Anthrocon and funny animal in the future - they're popular topics.

I'm thinking we might want to withdraw anthropomorphism, as it's really all over the place and nowhere near the quality that I'd expect in a "release" article. I'd like to add furry convention and fursuit, but they might be rejected over a lack of public interest. It would probably be best to concentrate our efforts on improving furry fandom before the final selection. What are your thoughts? GreenReaper (talk) 13:35, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Wolfsbane

Is Wolfsbane directly related to the furry fandom? Just being a character that shapeshifts between human and wolf is not enough, in my opinion; it has to be either geared for furry fans or a large enough part of furry culture. In comparison, Werewolf doesn't fall under WP:FURRY's scope (though, contradictorily, Werecat is listed in WP:FURRY#Review_or_sourcing). -kotra (talk) 20:33, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Well, it's not just between human and wolf, the character, AKA Rahne, can shift to any point in between the two. Half-human and half-wolf is pretty much a big part of the whole furry 'thing'. Lots42 (talk) 12:30, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Gah, this is a tough one. I think it is ultimately outside the project because Wolfsbane is really a human who can take the form of an animal, not an animal who has aspects of humanity. If we include this, we also have to include large numbers of fictonal lycanthropes, which have historically not been considered part of furry fandom but of therianthropy - notably, neither of these articles are within this project. Yeah, I think this is an example of the difference between "anthropomorphic animal" and "zoomorphic human". Besides, this character is geared for mainstream comics fans (not furry fans), and as far as I know, she doesn't have a particularly strong following in the furry fandom. If we included everything somewhere in the continuum between animal and human, we would have to include obviously non-furry articles like Homo habilis or Sphinx. -kotra (talk) 18:28, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

My personal thought is this is just needless bureaucracy. There's a few people who "coordinate" here, myself included, but that doesn't mean we're interested in (say) the A-Class review system; or, more importantly, that we should have more say than anyone else. Not sure I could get away with that even at WikiFur. I think there are a few leaders here. :-)

It all comes back to what we want to cover. Is it necessary for a work to be intended for us? To have influenced our fandom? To be of interest to some fans? Or just for it to include anthropomorphic animals? There's no argument that both of these feature anthropomorphic animal characters, but then so do Animal Farm and Maus and we don't claim those, nor most cartoons that feature them in some way or another.

My personal feeling is these topics are better served by other groups of editors who have the interest and expertise to improve them. It's not that these articles aren't important, but we provide no real benefit to them. I've said a lot about this before. If others agree, it might be time to reduce our advertised project scope to disclaim such works. This would be a substantive change, but I believe it reflects the actual focus of this project. Samuel Conway

I have nominated Samuel Conway for good article status. This article is almost entirely my own work, and as I believe it is very close to the GA standard, I do not intend to be giving out any bounties. I would, however, like to know if you think there are any barriers to making it A-class as well. Are any areas insufficiently covered, inside or out of the fandom? (See the general A-class criteria.) The article has now gained GA status, though not without a few changes owing to RP9's detailed review. I'd be glad to work on it further, but it would help to have some idea of what is missing or inadequately covered (other than the lack of a complete publication history). Good topic

I've adjusted the project lede to reflect a narrower focus, and a larger long-term goal - to make furry fandom into a featured topic. This will not be an easy task and we are not likely to get there soon, but I think it's possible, and worth working towards.

As a stepping stone, what might furry fandom look like as a good topic? In practice, it might make sense for it to be split into two:

Is there anything missing? I'm thinking that most people, companies and publications of relevance can be covered within the history and list of comics, rather than a separate list. The history and convention areas obviously needs a lot of work - history doesn't exist, conventions aren't close to being GAs (all but AC are start-class) - but at least they have some chance of being verifiable. Furry comics and webcomics? Kevin and Kell, Ozy and Millie and Jack (webcomic) are all GAs, and Newshounds used to be one. I'm hoping to get Kevin and Kell up to FA. The issue with furry comics is that topics have to be comprehensive (you can't cherry-pick articles), and - except in unusual circumstances - every item of a good topic has to be a good article. I just don't see that happening with such an open-ended topic. That is why I think we should focus on making List of furry comics into a featured list, containing the most notable and verifiable details from each comic article. According to the overview criteria, we can then say "well, furry fandom is an overview topic - furry comics would be another whole subtopic." Obviously, to make the list featured, it will have to have a good deal of high-quality information, which will ideally come from good comic articles. GreenReaper (talk) 19:13, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Scope

Hi peeps, a long time ago I wanted to ask about whether the project was interested in having its template added to certain video games (games = what I'm about), but was extremely unsure (and still am) about what qualified as a relevant article. At that time there seemed to be something of a scuffle about scope on the project's talk page, so I shied away from asking. The specific game I was going to ask about then was Skyrates, which at that time didn't have an article. Now, I just found the article by chance and noticed that a couple of weeks ago members here were actually putting the furry project's tag back after it was removed, which came as a surprise.

Could I ask:

• Is this discussion welcome? I don't want open a can of worms.
• If it is, is there an at least vague set of criteria I could use to decide whether an article is suitable for tagging?
• Would it be OK to bring a few examples of varying relevance to see what's desirable?

Discussion is cool. I think there are several types of games to consider . . .

• Games that have clearly influenced or are directly influenced by furry fandom (Furcadia, Inherit the Earth): Included.
• Games that include anthropomorphic animal characters in a mature, developed environment (Skyrates): Debatable.
• Games that merely include cartoon anthropomorphic animals, especially "kids games" (Reader Rabbit, Sonic the Hedgehog): Not sufficiently relevant.

As the discussion above suggests, over time this project has become more clearly defined around the fandom itself rather than the generic topic of anthropomorphic animals, and so the default would be to not include the ones in the middle. Frankly, stuff like Donald Duck doesn't need our help, but Rowrbrazzle does. So the question to ask is "can members of this project really add anything that the average Wikipedian could not?", and perhaps also "would we care that much if the article disappeared?"

As for Skyrates, the furry fandom template was actually removed without comment by an anonymous editor and then re-removed by them with the comment It should be removed. Please discuss it first if you'd like it to be added. - then we tried to, but they didn't show up. Personally I know one other person in the fandom who plays it, and obviously the characters are anthropomorphic animals, but as far as I know it's not really "a part" of the fandom in any meaningful sense. On the topic of this WikiProject's scope, there is a manga series called Free Collars Kingdom in which the main characters are anthropomorphic cats. Refocussing on traffic

I'm not sure if anyone else actually uses importance, but I did a little re-rating last night, based mostly on the popularity statistics. I think 500 pageviews a month is a reasonable requirement for most articles of Mid importance (though I spared Rowrbrazzle), and 1500-2500 for High. Nothing comes close to furry fandom for traffic, of course, but some topics (including some people) appear to be fairly common search terms. GreenReaper (talk) 02:50, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

T.H.E. Fox

I was very disappointed to find that the T.H.E. Fox article was deleted. I think is presents one of the biggest problems with verifiability and notability with Wikipedia. That is how do you verify or assert the notability of something in a time before digital archives were kept and readily available, allowing for rather obscure information to be verifiable.

According to the bio in the GEnie Commodore File Library, T.H.E. Fox has been mentioned in RUN magazine,.INFO magazine and TC-128/64 Magazine. Also an editorial cartoon was put in The San Bernardino Sun, although I an not sure whether this was the actual T.H.E. Fox comic. I would think if archives of these magazines could be found that would be enough? Incidentally, the San Bernardino Sun only seems to have archives back to 1998, well after the cartoon was put in.

As far as whether it was the first Internet comic (or webcomic if you consider it a misnomer for any Internet comic). This is the best I could find.

I will try to track down these mentions in the various magazines and the editorial, any other info about the comic or help would be appreciated. RP9 (talk) 09:02, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

It is unfortunate that this kind of thing is passed by on Wikipedia. Unfortunately, relatively few people seem to have known of it at the time it was published, and it's not had enough attention to be a topic of historical study. You're welcome to expand WikiFur's version until sufficient sources are found. If you want a copy of the images converted to a more modern format, see the links there. The trouble is the bio itself is not necessarily a reliable source. The sources it suggests exists probably would be (it would be "republication in a notable work") but we would need to know enough to give a proper reference for it. Oddly it was not mentioned in this interview. The other source linked . . . I honestly don't know. But it's a lot better than nothing, and provides a source other than Wikipedia. RUN magazine and .INFO magazine seem to be archived in *gasp* physical libraries, but I can not find anything on TC-128/64. Of course going to a library and searching through hundreds of pages of old computer magazines might make one seem up to no good. RP9 (talk) 18:28, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

I managed to get my hands on digitally scanned copies of both .info and RUN. (I am calling Fair Use on this one) I do not think there is any hope for TC-128/64, that and I am tired of searching for it. Because these are scanned I am not afforded the luxury of full text search. So, manually searching through 143 issues it is! Ha! I found the first one! (The RUN one) It is part of an article called Pixel Perfection reviewing various popular "computer artists" at the time. I love the way it starts out "QuantumLink fans are also sure to recognize Joe Ekaitis's work." ...and they said it wasn't notable. It then goes on to say "Ekaitis is best known for his cartoons featuring The Fox." This took a lot longer than I thought it would plus I've been out for a bit so I did not get around to .info yet. Found the one in .info finally. It is part of a column called Public Domain mentioning uploads of interest on Quantumlink, American Peoplelink, and other similar services. Here is a part of it: "Each week Joe creates a single comic using a combination of computer drawing programs. The BEST OF FOX file contains 10 of Joe's best, along with the dkslide viewer program."

DYK

Because I was curious (and bored), I decided to investigate the impact that the DYK had. Surprisingly, it got over 2000 views. But perhaps more interestingly, it got the most traffic, being nearly twice as high as the second highest hook.

Looking at hooks for other times does not seem to indicate that placement has any substantial effect. However, T.H.E. Fox article unlike with the other hooks, had a considerable traffic spike beforehand, in fact right after I created it. But, that was probably GreenReaper's fault. :P

Despite what you may expect, the late morning (in the US), which is when T.H.E. Fox was up, actually had the most DYK hits over all the hooks for each time.

This distribution is not at all consistent with the 30th where the late night (or the very early morning of the 30th) is the highest, the morning is the lowest and the rest is evenly spread throughout the rest of the day. However the previous Friday (the 24th) is roughly consistent, suggesting that is a pattern specific to Fridays.

This all makes me wonder why T.H.E. Fox in particular, was so popular among the DYKs? Although, out of around 2300 people, nobody edited the article. Maybe this just means no one knows what T.H.E. Fox is and thus would have nothing to contribute. Of course, that would also mean they would have learned something new. That I suppose is a good thing. RP9 (talk) 22:18, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Better Days

I started a new article on the webcomic Better Days. I intend to work on it some more when I have the time, but I am very busy. Could someone who is more knowledgeable than me about this comic and its author do some work on the article? (Sugar Bear (talk) 21:25, 19 March 2010 (UTC))

Perhaps those who can see such revisions could tell us whether the current article is any better than the one which was deleted. :-)

Sugar Bear has done a good job starting this, but I'm still not convinced by the references available. About the only thing there that is remotely qualified as a reliable source is the Webcomic Overlook, and that:

1. is a blog
2. spent quarter of the article complaining about furry fandom (the Wikipedia article)
3. gave the comic 1 out of 5

The strip is worth talking about (TVTropes does so in excruciating detail), but I don't think a good article can be constructed within Wikipedia's requirements. GreenReaper (talk) 05:40, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Furry to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. WikiProject Furry emblem RfC

hello. Green Reaper advised me to mention the ongoing RfC about the emblem used on this wikiproject, which is identical to the wikifur logo, and promotes wikifur imo. wikipedia is supposed to be neutral and not promotional and denying that this logo plastered all over one of the most visited sites in the world promotes wikifur is to deny reality. since GR owns/runs wikifur, this will also be brought up at WP:COI per Conti. the ongoing RfC is here. -badmachine 16:41, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

No list of furry books?

Can it be that despite there being tons of book-lists here on Wikipedia, there is actually none about novels featuring anthropomorphic animals? Did I miss it, or is it indeed missing? Or has there been one and did not survive an AfD? Just asking, because if it is not and has never been, I may take the task upon myself to cast it into existence. As far as I know, we've never had one. Bear in mind that calling a book like Watership Down "furry" just because it features anthropomorphic animals is original research; it is only in the last few years that furry publishers (and some non-furry ones) have been using the term. Maybe I should note that I am using the term "furry" pretty loosely here, in the sense of a shorter synonym of "anthropomorphic animal", which is rather tedious to write out due to its length. Anyway, I don't intend to use the word "furry" in the list at all, so I may have a good chance to circumvent any issues concerning OR. The category mentioned is certainly helpful, albeit incomplete, and much broader in its scope, so in all probability I will go ahead with the project (ok, you may call that a lie, since I am already going ahead with it, thinking that the lack of such a list is an informational hole rivaling the extent of Ginnungagap). • Those interested in suitable levels of can-kicking can go to the DRV for Last Res0rt (it was speedy deleted, DESPITE the second AfD being ongoing) and pitch in. For the record, I recognize that new sources have not materialized, but I would rather it be put in the Article Incubator, where it continue to be edited by WikiProject Furry while I try to go, ah... "find" a few new sources. The only major interview that's occured since the article's previous deletion is this podcast, which may be useful but I suspect falls far below the standards of "notable" sources for the purposes of defense against an AfD.
