Genetic classification shouldn't be in the narrow table. It can easily, and often, get quite long (horizontally), and could not fit in the table, making it extremely difficult to read. --Menchi (Talk)â 16:54, 13 Dec 2003 (UTC)

That would be a pity, such a classification would provid easy shortcuts to other related languages. Perhaps it can still be added but skipping some of the subclasses. Donar Reiskoffer 07:26, 17 Dec 2003 (UTC)

I agree the classification is fantastic. We can have it as detailed as possible (to the degree that is without dispute academically), but we should have it in the article proper, not in that narrow table. --Menchi (Talk)â 07:28, 17 Dec 2003 (UTC)

I added categories, which I have also been adding to several language articles. One of the categories should be the appropriate language family, e.g. "Bantu languages" or "Iranian languages". If the language is spoken in only a few countries, say less than five, the appropritate categories, e.g. "Languages of Afghanistan" or "Languages of Nigeria", should also be added. If the language is spoken in many countries, a category like "Languages of Africa" might be more appropriate. Burschik 10:10, 30 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I'm going to go ahead and change the template to move the "history" section to just before the "examples" section. In retrospect, I think that linguistic history is not as important as most of the synchronic information about the language. I know this makes many articles out of sync with the template, but c'est la vie. We'll get to them. If anyone can think of a good reason why history should stay the first section, go ahead and revert it and we can hash it out here. I'm more than willing to debate; however, since I'm the one who original wrote the template, I can't imagine there will be too much resistance to my changing my mind about my own creation. Wiki template for summary table

[edit]

Gwalla created a Wiki template for the Summary Table which, poking around, I note is in use on multiple language pages. However this template page doesn't contain info on use of that shortcut. I used it recently for moving Galician to the template (BTW I have a request with the admins in for moving this to Galician language) and found it quite helpful.

I didn't feel comfortable editing the Language Template page without some consensus... can we arrive at some consensus about referring to the Wiki template on this page for use in creating the Summary Table? Details of this template by Gwalla are at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Languages Abbruzzi 01:48, 27 Nov 2004 (UTC)

We should use it here since all articles should use the Wiki template because then it is easier to keep track of which articles have the infobox. If all new infoboxes on articles used the Wiki template nobody would have to come along and convert it. Wikiacc 20:45, 7 Jan 2005 (UTC)
It looks like Grendelkhan did it. That kind of ends the discussion...Wikiacc 02:12, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC)
