Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Aymatth2, if I understand you well, you are referring to class criteria in talkpages. I believe WikiProject Nigeria already uses a class criteria to rate articles. For example, Talk:Indigenous_People_of_Biafra is rated as C class.HandsomeBoy (talk) 09:34, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

Yes, that is correct. WikiProject Nigeria uses the approach documented at Wikipedia:WikiProject Nigeria/Assessment#Quality scale. That is much the same as the approach at Wikipedia:Content assessment. It seems unlikely that WikiProject Nigeria has special criteria. A biography of a Nigerian would be rated the same quality by WikiProject Nigeria and WikiProject Biography, an article on a river would be rated the same quality by WikiProject Nigeria and WikiProject Rivers, and so on. I have taken the liberty of editing Talk:Enugu to add |class=GA to {{WikiProject banner shell}}. You can see how this looks compared to Talk:Kingdom of Nri. @Usmanagm:,Quick advice: on Wikipedia, use words like "prestigious" with care, especially when it involves a school that was founded about a one year ago. This does not mean PRU is not a great school, just that Wikipedia will want to see verifiable sources that demonstrate it is of a higher cadre, else it will reek of conflict of interest to objective editors if unfounded. And you barely see such superlative words for schools like Harvard, etc. Wikipedia states things as they are. That being said, I have done a lot of work to improve Nigeria higher institutions articles and I can see Pen Resource University already have a Wikipedia article. I don't really get the suggestions you want, are you looking for ways students and staff of the school will become Wikipedia contributors? Or you want recommendations on how to improve content of the university on Wikipedia?HandsomeBoy (talk) 23:00, 21 April 2023 (UTC)

Mevoelo Good article but not yet a notable subject. Probably a case of WP:TOOSOON. If I were to be a reviewer, I won't accept the draft, and move to article space mainly because it falls short of the guidelines for WP:NPEOPLE. And this is not a case of not being familiar with subject or Nigerian topics, I have even worshiped in his church once, he is certainly on the right part to Wikipedia notability, but not yet there. YNaija listing and present independent significant coverage is not strong enough.Who knows you might be lucky and reviewer might accept it. @Amalgoni:, as a member of Nigerian house of representatives, Oluwaseun Sesi Whingan is definitely notable. My advice for you is to keep things simple. You can start with a stub article. All those talk of him being a philanthropist should be removed or minimized from the lede. You can have a neutrally-written brief on it in subsections. Thank you so much Harej, I will go through your project page soon, and give a support vote/comment if I find the proposed feature useful. But one thing, I'd love a direct reply to is - there a times we see a new editor promoting their website by adding links to multiple Wikipedia pages. Usually, I do my reverts by just going to their contribution page. But sometimes they use multiple Wikipedia accounts and it is difficult for me to know the pages (if not on my watchlist) they visit to add spam links. Does your tool have a way of letting me know where such questionable domains are used as references on Wikipedia? I am sure a number of persons associated with this WikiProject will share similar views and have had such experiences. It will be helpful if such as feature was available. @HandsomeBoy: That's the basic idea, that once a domain is determined to be unreliable, you will be able to track its usage in articles. Although the bot is still under development, being able to define these domains is a development goal. Harej (talk) 17:30, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

Amegbu Ogwa Proposed for Deletion

The article Amegbu Ogwa has been proposed for deletion as it cites no sources and Wikipedians could not find a source on the internet. If anyone is able to find sources supporting the notability of this village, it would be great if they could add them to the article. Otherwise, the article will likely be deleted tomorrow. Running from October 1 to 31, 2023, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. Agbaballer, the article is really scanty. Just being a governorship candidate is not enough to be on Wikipedia. I see you added the SAN page to the "See also" section. Is he a SAN? If being a governorship candidate is presently the most "notable" thing about him, then perhaps you should wait till after elections. I wish to submit that the article on the Indigenous people of Biafra be reviewed unless the intention is not to educate the public on what full profile of the organisation. This is because this organisation had a deputy leader that resigned.What for instance happened and led to the resignation of the deputy leader? Why for instance the names of the leader,the Spokesperson and/or the Media and publicity secretary be mentioned but not the deputy leader? Is that deliberate or an innocent omission? Conflicting info on Lagos State and Kano State Pages

I wish to raise conflicting info I have found recently. In their opening paragraphs, both the Lagos State page and the Kano State claim that their respective state is the most populous in Nigeria.

The Kano article cites Nigeria's National Bureau of Statistics' 2020 Bulletin, which estimates figure of every state and says that Kano is the most populous. The Lagos article's claim is supported by a claim from Lagos State Government.

Hi Iamaneyeblinkernoseblower, thanks for bringing this here. This is a very unique scenario that requires extra care so as not to seem like downplaying the facts of one region over the other. First, let me respond as a person who is familiar with population studies in Nigeria before I provide one as a Wikipedia editor. Personally, as at today, correct me if I am wrong, but I do not think there is any sincere person that will dispute Lagos being the most populous state in Nigeria. Pretty sure even the Kano State governor will not argue with this. However, I can understand that considering the official figures presents the contrary it puts Wikipedia in a difficult position. Let me add to say that while the last census figure presents Kano as the most populous, independent sources tend to go with the numbers by the Lagos State government.

There are sources from independent reliable sources that presents Lagos as Nigeria most populous city, which seem like a more neutral narration. However, I recommend stating the designating body so that the reader can draw his own deductions. What I mean is - for Lagos, use words such as "...it is generally regarded as the most populous state in Nigeria by state officials and several independent sources including xxxxx, yyyyy and zzzzzz". While for Kano, just state that "According to data released by National Bureau of Statistics, it is listed as the most populous state in Nigeria". That is my take, and I will like to hear the opinion of fellow Nigerian Wikipedians (Vanderwaalforces, @SafariScribe:, @Reading Beans:, @Ammarpad:).

Lastly, I just hope the proposed census ends these inconsistencies, it is long overdue. HandsomeBoy (talk) 07:27, 30 April 2024 (UTC)

IMO as a Nigerian, we could credibly conclude that Lagos State is the most populous by population and may not by land mass, since the last consensus was that Kano State has about the highest LGs amongst the Nigerian state. Without being skeptical, I also believe "Lagos should be regarded as the most populous by number of people, business, and all that." While Kano on the other hand, presents itself as the largest state per land mass and geo measuring. Now the sources will not be confused. Either way, I don't think land mass is same as number of people and if we're considering the most populous, we should use the Bureau of Statistics of the 2006 consensus—which is still the current as far as I can tell or otherwise have been changed–only God knows when?, thus, favouring Kano (because states are rated as most populous by land mass, and a state with a high land mass is mostly going to have the larger number of people). Kindly, land mass does not have anything to do with this. "A state with a high land mass is mostly going to have the larger number of people" simply does not follow, there are many places with high land mass that have lower populations than smaller places. Ok, let's forget everything concerning land mass. Lagos State, not Lagos which is the most populous city cannot be called the most populous State in Nigeria. Maybe the editor was confused of Lagos city and the state because in Kano State not also the city presented a pure two sources of the 2006 consensus we knew as well as the survey by the Bureau of Statistics in 2016. I think that Lagos state is more populous while Kano has more landmass. I tend to disagree that population is estimated with landmass otherwise, Russia would be the most populous instead of China. Having said this, I will lean on the suggestions given by HandsomeBoy while we wait for the much awaited census. If this suggestion is not viable, then, we can revert to the 2006 census, "... according to the 2006 [state name] has [population number] making it the most populous state." Or something like that. Nevertheless, the statement pertaining to Lagos State is rather contentious due to its unwavering assertiveness, particularly in the absence of an immediate citation. It is a common practice to concur with prevailing beliefs regardless of the presence or absence of evidence. In contrast, the article on Kano State appropriately references the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), which lends credibility to the information presented. Therefore, the statement regarding Lagos State ought to be rephrased to reflect the statistics provided by the NBS, rather than presenting an unqualified assertion. It is often the case that generalizations are made based on widely held beliefs, and I suspect this was the case when the statement was incorporated into the article. You said it well. Most applicably, it seems to be the turnout of Lagos city being the most populous over Kano (city), a city in Kano State. All I'm finalizing is that Kano State is the most populous state in Nigeria per [14] and [15] followed by Lagos State, while it is turned upside for the cities, Lagos and Kano (city). Developing Countries WikiContest

Starting this July, we will see a new contest on the scene - the Developing Countries WikiContest (WP:DCWC)! Think of it as a WikiCup but only for articles and media on developing countries.

Competitors may submit GAs, GTs, FAs, FTs, FLs, FPs, and DYK and ITN entries from/on developing countries to gain points and proceed to further rounds. Points are also awarded to those who review GAs, FAs and FLs.

Nigeria is listed as a developing country for the purposes of this contest, so articles related to it are eligible to be submitted for points. I encourage everyone here to sign up and compete with editors from around the world to create high-quality content!

Obe (Soups)

This is an article created by a contributor who was indefinitely blocked shortly afterwards. The sources cited are all blogs, and wouldn't support the text if they were WP:RS. Furthermore, I can't find anything in English which actually supports the central claim of the article: that 'Obe' is a specific type of Yoruba cuisine, rather than a Yoruba word for soups and/or sauces. And while I can absolutely see the merits of an article on e.g. Yoruba cuisine if valid sources could be found describing specific attributes that distinguish it, this article clearly doesn't do that. Before I nominate it for deletion, does anyone from this project have any comments? AndyTheGrump (talk) 15:00, 28 May 2024 (UTC)

@AndyTheGrump: I understand Yoruba language quite well, and Obe actually means soup in general. It is just like the Yoruba word for soup, while Obe ata means stew in general. Honestly, without looking at any sources, I am not convinced on the merit of such an article. it is just like the Spanish word for soup having a Wikipedia article. Sounds like something for the dictionary or the soup article in Yoruba Wikipedia. Wonder what any other person thinks? HandsomeBoy (talk) 21:21, 3 June 2024 (UTC)
