April 2008 Archive[edit]

I propose to clean-up this page[edit]

Specifically, I propose to move most, if not all, of the discussion to an archive or archives. Then pick out a few of the most important discussion topics and place them as headings. My goal is to simplify this page to encourage discussion. Parlirules (talk) 15:32, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Use of Wiki Citation template for Books[edit]

I experimented with using the Citation template for the list of Parliamentary Procedure books. Since use of this template is optional, I would like to poll other editors on whether this is appropriate and should we encourage its use (or one of the other citation templates). If there is objection, I'll remove the template use from the page. Parlirules (talk) 15:38, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is this different from the template that was previously created for parliamentary procedure articles, Template:Cite parl? There is a brief discussion of that template above on this page. I did not create it, but I have been using it and have been slowly, systematically replacing substandard cite formats (some of which were originally used by me when I was in a hurry) with the template. For an example, see Reconsider, which I worked on just last night. Neutron (talk) 16:59, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it is different, but not incompatible, because they do different things. The cite template you used helps provide the reference (~footnotes). It has limited functionality because it is hard coded for only a few (three four) authors and a few editions. It's possible to use that cite template and get an erroneous reference - very easy in fact. However I like what it is trying to do and it seems to work fine if you stick with the current edition of Demeter's or the 4th of TSC, and most editions of Robert's. I looked at the code - I'd like to know who is maintaining it, because I don't want to disrupt their work without checking first.
The citation template that I used on the project page was one I found in the Wiki template section. It does a different function -- formats the book into a bibliographic reference. It can take any author or book information and besides formatting things consistently, it provides some embedded links. I've found a few limitations, but someone did a nice job. I would like to use this citation template for all lists of books where there is an intent to help people locate a particular book. It should be possible to re-code this citation template if we need it to behave a differently. If you haven't already, use the edit link on the list of books on the project page. You can see how intuitive it is for someone to add information. Parlirules (talk) 21:06, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
