Discussion of the Wikipedia Takes Philadelphia project[edit]

I would like more discussion of the Wikipedia Takes Philadelphia project before committing to do more than attend. I am assuming that this talk page is the proper place to do that.

It seems to me that there should be a decision about what photos are really needed. For me, this is especially true because I have been adding a lot of Philadelphia photos to Wikimedia Commons, and I still have a lot of photos on my hard drive, waiting for upload with appropriate information. I have found the Commonist tool to be excellent for this work, along with Irfanview for renaming photos.

I have mostly added photos of NHL or NRHP sites, sites in Old City, and Fairmount streets, with a scattering of other places, like FLP library buildings. Sometimes I have added photos to the relevant articles, such as Library Company of Philadelphia or New Century Guild. Since there is still about a month to go before the target date, I may still add a lot of photos to the requested list.

So, I would invite the organizers or any other members of the WikiProject Philadelphia to comment on the targets. I would prefer not to do Old City or Independence Park buildings, especially not exteriors, in favor of either a list of particular locations, or a general area, such as University City, which would be well known to potential participants.

Comments? --DThomsen8 (talk) 12:58, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In general, our practice in previous events in other cities has been to try to get as large and diverse a list as possible, so that people who may be interested in different areas may all have their own unique opportunities for participating and winning in their own way. So, we would try for a good list of particular locations, organized by the different neighborhoods.--Pharos (talk) 22:57, 19 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That is a much better approach than concentrating on Old City. What about interiors of buildings, rather than the exteriors? Oh, and are you participating?--DThomsen8 (talk) 01:06, 20 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Interiors can certainly be an option. In our first Wikipedia Takes Manhattan, we gave bonus points for all interiors; we didn't do it the second time because it got kind of complicated, but it might make sense to request it for particular locations. I'll help with planning, and I will definitely try to make it down from New York City to participate.--Pharos (talk) 03:12, 21 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have any of the rules for the NYC event? There is less than a month to go, and we don't have any significant publicity out, except for what is here on Wikipedia. Is there any budget for advertising, or even flyers? --DThomsen8 (talk) 10:49, 21 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, we have all the rules documented and hopefully they can evolve some more. As to date, it was always provisional, and I think we're going to reschedule to the Fall, because we have some great partners who will be able to work with us then to make this a bigger and more successful event. Hopefully, we can have a wiki meetup in Philly over the summer as well, where we can work to plan out some of these things ahead of time. Also, a small request: photography is great anytime, but if possible please avoid going specifically after items on the list now so it's not totally depleted by event time :)--Pharos (talk) 15:04, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Rescheduling until fall is an excellent idea, especially if you know you will have more supporters then. Pardon me, though, I cannot find "items on the list" on the project. Where is the list? --DThomsen8 (talk) 17:26, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Scavenger hunt items[edit]

I've just added a whole bunch of items to the scavenger hunt list from List of works by Thomas Eakins. I'd love it if someone could knock these out. Raul654 (talk) 19:01, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Photo[edit]

I think as soon as it is in the Commons, we should add the group photo we took to this page! --Secundus Zephyrus (talk) 04:57, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Have the photos been uploaded yet? Raul654 (talk) 05:18, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The photos are in the drop-io dropbox. Hopefully we can start putting them on commons in the next day or two. --Mblumber (talk) 13:04, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Portal[edit]

How about a nice photo for October's Selected Picture on the Philadelphia Portal?--BillFlis (talk) 15:01, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to pick your favorite. Thanks. --Mblumber (talk) 05:24, 15 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sign ups[edit]

What are non-wikipedians supposed to do about signing up? The URL on the poster (http://tr.im/wikiphilly) just redirects to this page. --Secundus Zephyrus (talk) 16:05, 12 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
