In front of the Federal Office Building
There are two of these urn-like objects in front of the Federal Office Building. Does anyone know what they are? - Jmabel | Talk 00:41, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
- Purely decorative is my guess. SchmuckyTheCat
- Maybe. But just abstractly so? They are rather unusual. - Jmabel | Talk 18:44, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Seattle portal!
Hello everyone! I got inspired to start a portal for Seattle (long overdue, in my opinion). If you're interested, please help me fix it up, feature some of the best Seattle articles, and create a list of topics. Any suggestions are welcome! Cheers, -- phoebe/(talk) 07:32, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
- I don't get how the "selected pictures" magic works. I made several suggestions a couple of days ago that are still sitting as suggestions; the "more pictures" is blank, so I can't tell what pictures are already "selected"; and I don't get the mechanism by which a particular picture is displayed. - Jmabel | Talk 18:29, 22 September 2007 (UTC)
- The pictures I "suggested" on Sept 19 are still sitting there as "suggested". Am I missing something? - Jmabel | Talk 04:10, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
- I am going to presume there is no process, and "promote" them myself, but it seems to me to be a liability to have a "suggestions" area that no one is monitoring. - Jmabel | Talk 00:20, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
I've made a few tweaks and officially listed the portal as "live", but I believe that no one is monitoring "suggestions". - Jmabel | Talk 20:24, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
There seem to be no criteria for inclusion in List of buildings in Seattle. There are some pretty obscure inclusions (e.g. the East Republican Street Stairway) and some remarkable omissions (nothing in Pike Place Market, nothing on any college campus). Would someone be interested in taking this under their wing and setting out criteria? Or should we just delete the damn thing and let categories and maybe a Wikipedia-space list of articles we are missing do this work? - Jmabel | Talk 03:21, 23 September 2007 (UTC)
- This looks like a good case for categories, unless someone wants to add text about Seattle architecture. I don't think we need a standalone article that's just lists. --Lukobe 00:28, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
Rainier Brewing Company
Rainier Brewing Company could really use some work. Does someone want to take it on? I've made a few suggestions on its talk page. - Jmabel | Talk 06:42, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
Thomas Burke
I notice that Thomas Burke (judge) is a stub. He's a complex and fascinating figure, worthy of a solid article, if anyone is looking for an interesting topic to research. I'm up to my eyeballs in other things right now. - Jmabel | Talk 05:12, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
Pioneer Square
I just did a little bit of work on Pioneer Square, Seattle, Washington, but it's a really anemic little article on a topic that could easily merit a book. Now that we've salvaged Seattle, Washington as a featured article, is anyone interested in taking this one on? - Jmabel | Talk 07:53, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
- By the way, I have recently added heavily to Commons:Category:Pioneer Square, Seattle, Washington. There is still more to be done (and let me know if there is anything in particular that someone wants). A lot of these could be the basis of articles, and I've done my best to make the descriptions be at least the equivalent of good stubs. - Jmabel | Talk 07:49, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
- I've been wanting to start an article on the Pioneer Square totem pole for a while, but can't seem to get around to it. Being Seattle's first piece of public art and a major icon for the city during the early 20th century, it seems worthy of at article. There are some nice photos at the Commons now (perhaps yours, Jmabel, I can't remember offhand). The totem pole is mentioned in several articles, but mainly in bits and pieces about how it was stolen from the Tlingit and how is was burned and replaced later on. There's a lot more that could be said, especially wrt how it so clearly symbolized Seattle's desired (and acquired) role at the "gateway to the north". Not only did it help usher in the use of Native American artwork as a symbol of Seattle (and mainly styles from the north rather than "local Indians" -- like totem poles themselves), but it was intentionally placed so that it faced to the northwest, toward the Yukon and Alaska. Eventually its role as Seattle's symbolic icon with connotations of the PNW coast to Alaska, Indians and gold, was overshadowed by the "new totem pole" -- the Space Needle, with rather different connotations! Anyway, if I don't manage to get around to it, maybe somebody else will. The newish book Native Seattle has a lot of useful info for such a page. Pfly (talk) 00:20, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Sam Israel
No article on Sam Israel or the Samis Corporation. Without them, we'd have about half as many old buildings in downtown Seattle. - Jmabel | Talk 01:32, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
- Started something VERY basic on Sam himself. I'm assuming there should only be one article for both Sam Israel and the Samis Foundation? --Lukobe (talk) 04:15, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
- I would think one article. But I'm a "lumper", not a "splitter". - Jmabel | Talk 00:34, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
Article is a bit of a mess, totally uncited, and (judging by some apparent vandalism I just fixed), no one is watching it. Would someone take this one under wing? - Jmabel | Talk 07:22, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
Category:Landmarks in Seattle
What, if anything, are the criteria for inclusion in Category:Landmarks in Seattle vs. Category:Buildings and structures in Seattle? Why on earth is the Mercer Arena a landmark while Benaroya Hall is not? (Oh, and the Camlin Hotel is in both, violating the rule about including something in two levels of the category hierarchy.) I suspect that this is a distinction without a difference. It seems to me that if we are to continue to have this category, it should only be for buildings and structures with city landmark designation, NRHP listing, etc. - Jmabel | Talk 08:53, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- It seems to make sense to require some sort of listing for being in the "Landmark" category. Murderbike (talk) 19:24, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
The only problem I see with that is that it means nothing built in the last 25 years will be included. But I think that's OK, in order to have a meaningful category.
Maybe add a Category:Registered Historic Places in Seattle as a subcat of Category:Registered Historic Places in Washington and Category:Buildings and structures in Seattle? And confine Category:Landmarks in Seattle to officially designated city landmarks? Any objections to that? - Jmabel | Talk 20:35, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- It seems we would need to confine it, to avoid OR and POV issues. Otherwise I could say my house is a "landmark" and it would be so. It seems cat:landmarks in seattle could include listings of NHLandmarks that happen to be in Seattle as well. Murderbike (talk) 20:49, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, but if we are going through the work of checking, I'd rather separate the national designations from the local. Many buildings have the local designation but not the national; some (like the 5th Avenue Theatre, unless I'm mistaken) have the national but not the local. - Jmabel | Talk 04:05, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
- Seattle Department of Neighborhoods website supposedly listing all official Seattle Landmarks. - Jmabel | Talk 04:09, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
Sorting this out
I've now introduced Category:Registered Historic Places in Seattle. I'm quite confident of everything I've placed in the category; there could imaginably be an article or two that belong in the category that I've missed. - Jmabel | Talk 00:37, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
- Later changed to Category:National Register of Historic Places in Seattle. - Jmabel | Talk 07:11, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
I've removed all buildings and structures without landmark status from Category:Landmarks in Seattle, which turned out to mean removing the vast majority of the articles from the category. I've repopulated it with some official landmarks that have articles but were not previously in the category. - Jmabel | Talk 09:50, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
By the way, most NRHP-listed structures in Seattle and most designated Seattle landmarks lack articles. Anyone looking for topics might consider these. - Jmabel | Talk 09:50, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
I've also done a List of Landmarks in Seattle. Took me most of the day, but I think this (1) should be very useful for anyone working in this area and (2) should prevent Wikipedians from unilaterally designating their personal landmarks as something encyclopedic. - Jmabel | Talk 02:48, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
& I've tried do something more useful with List of buildings in Seattle, which was a mess and is what started me down this road, but I would not be offended if it were entirely deleted. - Jmabel | Talk 03:30, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
Where would be the best place for an article about the Seattle First Methodist Church? The building, next to the Rainier Club on 5th and Marion, isn't on the list of Seattle landmarks because of a long legal battle that culminated in a state supreme court ruling. [1] As far as I've been able to tell, there isn't an article for the building, nor is there any mention of it or the court case on the landmark lists. - 67.40.184.142 (talk) 23:08, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
- There are a lot of notable buildings that have been judged not to be landmarks in the legal sense. I believe its correct name is "First United Methodist Church"; if I'm correct, then the article would to at First United Methodist Church (Seattle, Washington) (following the pattern laid down at disambiguation page First United Methodist Church), and would belong at least in Category:Buildings and structures in Seattle, Washington. Lots of photos available at Commons:Category:First United Methodist Church (Seattle). The legal battle would be a relevant part of an article on the building, but not of the "list of landmarks" article. By the way, if you open an account it will be a lot easier for people to notify you when they answer your questions. - Jmabel | Talk 07:20, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
Georgetown PowerPlant Museum
I recently visited the Georgetown PowerPlant Museum and took a lot of photos. I'm pretty happy with these aesthetically, but to be honest for the most part I don't know much about what I was looking at, and they could use far better descriptions than I can give them. If anyone knows their way around the museum or steam technology for power generation, then help would be welcome throughout Commons:Category:Georgetown PowerPlant Museum. If there is anything I can help with (e.g. identifying where in the building certain shots were taken), just ask on my talk page and I'll do my best to help out. - Jmabel | Talk 04:30, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
Registered historic places
Summarizing from a section I'm about to archive, because this much is still a "live" issue. - Jmabel | Talk 02:26, 26 January 2008 (UTC)
At List of Registered Historic Places in King County, Washington#Seattle:
- Many of these lack articles, if someone is looking for a good little project
- A few lack photos. Status details, previously here, are now at Talk:List of Registered Historic Places in King County, Washington#Seattle photos status, but here is a list of what's missing.
Adventuress: Now in Port Townsend- John B. Agen Property
- Duwamish Number 1 Site: this is an archeological site whose location is not public; the Burke Museum has some artifacts, but has not released any images.
- MV Vashon
MV WestwardDone. Caught it passing through town between Pacific voyages. - Jmabel | Talk 21:58, 9 September 2008 (UTC)- SS San Mateo: dying up in Canada, as discussed above
- Schooner Martha
- Showboat Theater: Demolished. Does anyone have a photo?
- (Old) Temple De Hirsch: I have a picture of the ruins; does anyone have an old photo of the building intact?
- Tracy House: actually in Normandy Park
- Wagner Houseboat
I've tried to get to Dick Wagner at the Center for Wooden Boats about the various remaining boats (and his houseboat), but no luck so far with him getting back to me. Quite surprising. - Jmabel | Talk 02:26, 26 January 2008 (UTC)
And landmarks
I've been also working on photos for List of Landmarks in Seattle. I'm down to about 20 without photos, and should knock off the bulk of the rest over the next few weeks.
A few I have issues similar to the ones mentioned above:
- Great American Food and Beverage Co. Street Clock: GAF&B is now the Lake Union Cafe (used as a banqueting hall). The clock is long gone. Anyone have a photo?
- MV Malibu
- MV Thea Foss
- Found a photo of her already on WP as the USS Amber not as good as a recent photo but better than nothing. 66.195.33.201 (talk) 01:20, 17 February 2010 (UTC)
Snagboat W. T. Preston - in Anacortes, anyone up that way who can get a photo?- Queen Anne Water Tank #1: the historic structure is gone, replaced by something rather dull. Does anyone have a photo of the historic structure?
Queen Anne Boulevard is described by the Dep't of Neighborhoods only as "certain Streets on Queen Anne Hill". Parks & Recreation doesn't say much more. I could make guesses, but does someone actually know which streets?- Found it. - Jmabel | Talk 22:28, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
Also, does anyone know exactly what streets constitute Queen Anne Boulevard? The parks dep't lists it as a park, and the Dep't of Neighborhoods lists it as a landmark, but I can't find a clear definition anywhere. - Jmabel | Talk 01:15, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
- Sorted out, see Queen Anne Boulevard. - Jmabel | Talk 19:25, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
"Open tasks"
I've added a bunch of uncovered (or woefully undercovered) topics to the "open tasks" list and will doubtless add more. Would anyone object to removing articles that are in decent shape from this list? For example, Seattle Cinerama is currently in the list, and while it could certainly be expanded, I don't see how it would be useful to send a random participant who wants to help to that particular article: the basics are there. - Jmabel | Talk 08:11, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
John Butler
Does anyone know anything about a Seattle painter named John Butler, an early teacher at the Cornish School? I can't make out whether he merits an article or not. He may just have been a moderately sized fish in a very small pond. I can't recall ever seeing any of his work, though it's possible I'm mistaken. - Jmabel | Talk 05:37, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
- Got the scoop, will write at John Butler (artist). - Jmabel | Talk 17:03, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
Pioneer Square-Skid Road District
User:Murderbike pointed out to me that the NRHP listing for the Pioneer Square-Skid Road District just expanded the district boundary yet further this month. I'm not sure exactly what was added; does anyone know? - Jmabel | Talk 05:50, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
- Hmm: or maybe he was wrong about that being an expansion: it just says "ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTATION APPROVED, 1/15/08". Possibly it was just further official documentation for the existing district. - Jmabel | Talk 05:54, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
- That's what it looks like to me. --Lukobe (talk) 07:08, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
Petosa
Petosa Accordions in Wallingford certainly deserves an article. Founded 1922, in Wallingford ever since, in current location since 1955. Photos available in Commons:Category:Petosa Accordions and Commons:Category:Petosa Accordions collection. Not a lot of citable sources, but here's a good one: Audio of interview with Joe Petosa, KUOW, 1 February, 2008. According to the program, they also started a factory in Italy in 1946, and stopped really manufacturing in Seattle in 1992. Now, even in Italy, it is hard to get a qualified workforce so their factory there has reduced output. "We'll continue as long as we can continue…" - Jmabel | Talk 05:58, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
Cascade
I've now done what I think is a pretty solid article at Cascade, Seattle, Washington. Review and further suggestions would be appreciated; I've taken this about as far as I see it going, though I may do articles on individual buildings, congregations, and/or individuals. - Jmabel | Talk 08:18, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
Idea for skyline template
If someone more knowledgeable could create a picture similar to http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Chicago_Skyline_Crop_Labeled_2560_ver2.jpg , I could create a template like {{Chicago skyline}}. John Reaves 07:07, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
- An interesting idea, though the Seattle skyline as it's generally thought of is very wide (at least from the Space Needle to the stadiums). Do you have an image in mind to work from? - Jmabel | Talk 07:28, 24 August 2008 (UTC)
- I took a photo we might use (though the optics of my camera aren't the greatest and if someone can do better, that would be welcome). I was thinking two (or 3) templates allowing more detail within downtown than to the north and south. I'll try to throw something together later this month. The photo:
- Jmabel | Talk 21:55, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
I'm not sure exactly where the article is in this one...
... but it's sure there some place. This comes from Richard C. Berner, Seattle 1900-1920: From Boomtown, Urban Turbulence, to Restoration (1991), Seattle: Charles Press, ISBN 0962988901, p. 118-121.
When Hiram Gill was elected mayor in 1910, he appointed "Wappy" Wappenstein as chief of police. Their "open city" administration was dramatically corrupt, to the point of being a national news story. The police chief cut a graft deal with vice bosses Clarence Gerald and Gideon Tupper: his payoffs amounted to a tax on prostitution, paid into his pocket. Gambling was rampant all over town. Tupper and Gerald were so emboldened that they formed the Hillside Improvement Company to build a resort on Beacon Hill including a 500-room brothel (which was actually built, but became an ordinary apartment house after Gill was recalled as mayor). Oh, and the would-be brothel was so big that it required a street vacation. Etc. Maybe it all belongs in an article on Gill (this was only part of a very checkered career), but I think "Wappy" probably deserves one as well. And possibly some of this should make its way into one of the Seattle history article series. (Berner doesn't say so, but I'm pretty sure that I've read elsewhere that the apartment building in question eventually was destroyed when an airplane crashed into it, so the building really might have article potential in its own right.) - Jmabel | Talk 06:27, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, I was right about the airplane crash: Alan J. Stein, B-50 Bomber crashes into the Lester Apartments near Boeing Field, killing 11, on August 13, 1951, HistoryLink, October 2, 2002. - Jmabel | Talk 06:29, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
- I'm going to write this at Lester Apartments. - Jmabel | Talk 21:45, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
CD boundaries
New topic on main Seattle talk page, moved from CD talk page. --Lukobe (talk) 21:24, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
Another interesting reference
I didn't know this early Seattle history: History of Seattle, Washington: With Illustrations and Biographical Sketches (1891), Frederic James Grant, written about 40 years after the Denny Party landed. I'm guessing it's the first history book about the city. All on line (although with a few glitches: some pages are poorly scanned), thanks to Google & Harvard.- Jmabel | Talk 22:26, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
I've done a bit of expansion on Westlake Park. Does anyone have a suggestion for a source I could cite on the importance of the park as a rallying point for political demonstrations? The prohibition on original research means I can't just cite a dozen specific examples. - Jmabel | Talk 00:19, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
MOHAI is looking for a volunteer
If you are here in Seattle, do a bunch of history-related research, and like to talk to people about it: MOHAI needs a History Researcher and Presenter, about 10 hours per month. They want someone with "at least a bacehlor's degree in history and be available during the week". I suspect that the former qualification is negotiable if you can show historical work you've already been doing. - Jmabel | Talk 22:28, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
Terracotta reliefs at Roosevelt High School

Seattle City Hall question
Am I looking somehow under the wrong name, or did Seattle City Hall not exist previously? I made a bare bones stub yesterday to start building out. rootology (T) 05:58, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
This project mentioned in the news
[2] --NE2 09:42, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
Cinderella Liberty: not much more than a stub. Filmed on location in Seattle. It's a good visual take on Seattle in the early 1970s. I suspect there could be much more of an article about it, especially about its use of Seattle locations, both those that still exist and those that don't. - Jmabel | Talk 21:09, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
- If you can track down sources for it, I'd be happy to build it out with you or for you, if you don't have time. rootology (C)(T) 23:24, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
Shall we go for another featured article?
A while back, I did a pretty fair job on Century 21 Exposition. Would a few other people like to join me in trying to get it up to FA status? - Jmabel | Talk 05:42, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
- I keep watching Pike Place Market, plus I'm going to do Beecher's Handmade Cheese as well I think... and get the entire suite of Market articles if I can to Good Topic status. Stupidly ambitious... rootology (C)(T) 23:21, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
- Rootology and I are working on the Pike Place Market article at User:Rootology/Pike Place Market. Others who are interested in working collaboratively are welcome to join us. - Jmabel | Talk 22:18, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
- Now back on the Pike Place Market page itself. - Jmabel | Talk 06:02, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
- I did a lot here, but Rootology has apparently not had time to get back & finish up the history section (and a few things remain to be cited for). Would someone else like to help out? - Jmabel | Talk 07:22, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
Historic Chinatown Gate
I noticed the "is one of many articles we could cite, but we should also find something about controversy over the name (both "historic" and "Chinatown" were controversial.)" and wanted to point out that "Chinatown" has historically been separate from Little Saigon. Chinatown/International District is the current official name of the complete neighborhood. The term "Chinatown" should be OK. I also noticed that "Historic" (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/346306_gate07.html) was used in the foundation name for whatever reason. The gate may or may not be note worthy but I don't believe controversy should be a problem.Cptnono (talk) 04:58, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
- I think the gate would count easily for notability. If no one starts this in week or two I'll take a crack at it. rootology (C)(T) 23:23, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
Move discussion
I'm sure everyone here has the page on their watchlist, but there is a move discussion going on right now about moving Seattle, Washington to Seattle. If you wish to join in the discussion, you may do so here. --Bobblehead (rants) 05:40, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
- This is resolved now, and it's been moved per a pretty resounding consensus to Seattle. rootology (C)(T) 23:20, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
1915 Port of Seattle facility
I found this image, published 1915, and uploaded it. However, I can't work out quite where it is. It looks like it would be somewhere south of the Pioneer Square area, but the sign on the building at center distinctly says "Port of Seattle". The only Port building that early that I know is the one at Bell Street. Does anyone know anything about a Port facility this far south at that early date? I know there is a history of the Port out there somewhere, so I can track that down if needed, but was hoping someone would spare me the search. - Jmabel | Talk 00:55, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

Black Elks Club
Does anyone know definitively which building the Black Elks Club was in on Jackson Street in the mid-20th century? Was it this one at the NE corner of Maynard & Jackson, or was it perhaps the (less interesting-looking) next one east at the NW corner of 7th & Jackson? - Jmabel | Talk 07:41, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
A very useful map
At left, a very useful largely blank Seattle map with a CC license, which can be used as a basis for any specialized maps of Seattle anyone may need to make in the future. - Jmabel | Talk 19:07, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
And another extremely useful one: Paul Dorpat has put the 1912 Baist maps online as a beautifully scanned set of PDFs. Start from this index; click on any part of the city for a detailed map. Zoom the PDF in to 200% for something amazing. - Jmabel | Talk 06:38, 22 November 2010 (UTC)
Seattle articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release
Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.
We would like to ask you to review the Seattle articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.
We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Mariners WikiProject
Hello all! I would like to extend an invitation to join WikiProject Seattle Mariners. The project was created in 2008, but didn't really take off. Now, I have re-created the project and would love some help. Everyone is welcome to join. Thanks! --Brian Halvorsen (talk) 04:23, 21 November 2010 (UTC)
Rail line in West Seattle
Description says 'The Great Northern Railway's "Empire Builder" passenger train leaving Seattle for Chicago' and the filename is Commons:File:West Seattle, 1959.jpg. A consideration for cross project consolidation of talk page templates
I have started a conversation here about the possibility of combining some of the United States related WikiProject Banners into {{WikiProject United States}}. If you have any comments, questions or suggestions please take a moment and let me know. --Kumioko (talk) 20:23, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
Archiving
I see that we now have a bot archiving any threads older than 7 days. Just wanted to point out that a good half-dozen-plus unresolved matters simply got archived without resolution. - Jmabel | Talk 07:32, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

Assessment
Hey. So we currently have a number of unassessed articles in the project. There is a bot, DodoBot (talk · contribs) who can copy over assessments from other project tags, and auto-assess if there is a {{stub}} template on the article. Is there any objection to this happening? --Admrboltz (talk) 18:48, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
OK to change archive from 1 week to 1 month?
I stopped by and saw no activity here. I'm glad I looked at the archive to see there is activity here, it's just archived fast. User Jmabel mentioned something related to this here. Does anybody mind if I change MiszaBot from 7 days to 31 days and leave the last few threads up? I think it might help others to know this project is active. Thanks. - Hydroxonium (talk) 18:26, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next
Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.
The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Please let leave a comment on the Portals talk page or let me know if you have any questions or ideas. --Kumioko (talk) 19:25, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
Navbox for Seattle?
Is there a "general purpose" Navbox for Seattle related articles, similar to this one for Portland? I looked around but could not find anything. Thanks. - Hydroxonium (talk) 00:06, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
- All the templates that are around are located in in this category. But, no, we do not have a generic Seattle template. --Admrboltz (talk) 00:09, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks very much for the quick reply. Thinking out loud here, I'm wondering if we spend too much time at Wikipedia? But what else are you going to do on a rainy day. Anyway, I think I'll make a generic Seattle navbox. - Hydroxonium (talk) 00:21, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

I've created a new navbox for general use on Seattle related articles. It's here {{SeattleWA}}. Everybody is encouraged to update, change or rename it, as I just through it together to have something for an article I'm currently working on. Thanks. - Hydroxonium (talk) 03:22, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
Banner merge
Proposal: Upmerging the {{WikiProject Seattle}} tag into {{WikiProject Washington}}. The Seattle project would remain separate from the larger project, but it makes sense since a vast majority of our articles are tagged with both banners already. The Seattle portion of the tag would look something like the Eastern Washington task force does:
United States: Washington / Seattle Unassessed | ||||||||||||||||
|
I would propose a "tag" of "This page is supported by the Seattle WikiProject", and a link to the Seattle portal as well (see {{WikiProject Canada}} for how sub portals look.
Thoughts, comments, questions, concerns? --AdmrBoltz 04:39, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
- This seems logical, although I'm wondering if this would make WikiProject Seattle less visible. Then again, the Space Needle image is iconic so maybe it wouldn't be an issue. I'm guessing we'd still be using it.
- How, specifically, would this be done? Would we just modify {{WikiProject Seattle}}? If so, would we then need to remove {{WikiProject Washington}} on talk pages that have both Seattle and Washington, or would we just leave them? I suppose we could have a bot run through and do all the replacing. Anyhoo, I think I'll defer to the experts on this as they have more experience. - Hydroxonium (H3O+) 08:11, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
- It would be the seattle tag that goes away and a new
|seattle=yes
function added to the Washington banner. And I happen to have a bot that can perform the action. --AdmrBoltz 15:35, 11 February 2011 (UTC)- It makes perfect sense to me. It wouldn't be hard to replace the Seattle tag with Washington/Settle. I have done this a couple times already with WikiProject US so if you need help let me know. WPSeattle has less than a thousand articles so I could probably do it in less than a day or two which would be faster than the time it takes to request a bot. --Kumioko (talk) 16:09, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, I was thinking that too. There are articles that are missing the tag all together, since the Seattle project is the Seattle MSA which is King, Pierce and Snohomish counties. --AdmrBoltz 16:16, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
- I could also add additional articles but I think we should transition that ones arlready associated to WPSeattle first. I just did a little checking and here are a couple things I found
- out of 786 articles tagged with WPSeattle WP Washington already has 764 of them so its just a metter of adding the task force flag and eliminating the Settle banner.
- WPWashington has about 6200 articles and Catgory Washington has over 8500.
- WP Seattle has 786 and Category Seattle Washington has 8391 articles. --Kumioko (talk) 17:01, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
- User:Admrboltz/seattlecat has just the Seattle specific cats that should be tagged. I am debating narrowing the scope to Seattle proper. --AdmrBoltz 04:45, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

Suggestion for WikiProject United States to support WikiProject Washington
It was recently suggested that WikiProject Washington might be inactive or semiactive and it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. As a subproject of Washington I would like to include this project in that support. Discussion to remove the Automatically assessed logic from the WikiProject United States template
Greetings, there is a discussion regarding removal of the logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories from Template:WikiProject United States. Most of the categories (over 220 Wikipedia wide) were deleted in February 2013 because they were empty. These categories were previously populated by a bot that hasn't run since 2011 and the categories aren't used. Removal of this uneeded/unused logic will greatly reduce the size and complexity of the WikiProject United States template. Any comments or questions are encouraged here. Kumioko (talk) 18:49, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
- Lest there is any confusion for people who don't speak the same language, the words "logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories" refer to the feature that was supposed to allow this WikiProject's template to "inherit" class and importance ratings from other WikiProjects. Kumioko says that there are no longer any bots performing the function that formerly copied those ratings. --Orlady (talk) 23:43, 31 August 2013 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal
Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:48, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!
Hello everyone!
You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!
Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Whilst reviewing Unreferenced Biographies of Living People, I found the Bob Whitsitt article. As I googled him and read the article, I quickly realised that he is a controversial figure, so referencing one or facts in the article isn't really sufficient. Could someone who's more familiar with his career take a look at it, as we need all articles, and especially all BLPs to be referenced. (this message has been cross posted to WT:NFL and WT:NBA too) Thanks, The-Pope (talk) 16:26, 9 February 2015 (UTC)
Are The Stranger and Puget Sound Business Journal reliable sources for a BLP?
The article Marcus Charles was created by an SPU based on citations from The Stranger and Puget Sound Business Journal. Do these qualify as WP:RS for BLP? — Sebastian 19:09, 18 February 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, in general they both meet Wikipedia's minimum requirements in WP:RS. The Stranger often includes opinion in their news articles, so you have to pay attention to what's being said. If a particular fact is in disupte between The Stranger and a larger news organization, I'd probably go with the larger one. If an extraordinary claim is being made in The Stranger, but isn't corroborated in any other source, I'd probably leave it out. Or else attribute it by name to the article's author.
If what you're really asking is if Marcus Charles should be speedy deleted, then you should de-prod the article and take it to AFD. We shouldn't be having the AFD discussion here. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 19:43, 18 February 2015 (UTC)
Requested move: University Link extension
This concerns all of the Link Light Rail extensions and whether or not they should include the word "extension" in the article titles and whether or not the word should be capitalized. Please discuss at Talk:University Link extension. SounderBruce 18:24, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
A bit moribund
This WikiProject seems a bit moribund. I'd be interested in trying to revive it; maybe prepare a good current list of articles that need work, articles to be started, and probably images needed. I'll probably be ready to give this some focus around mid-June of this year. Is there anyone else who would also like to work on this? Not much point if I'm doing it all alone. - Jmabel | Talk 05:40, 30 April 2015 (UTC)
- I wouldn't mind helping out with researching and going out and taking pictures. I'm currently focusing on getting Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel to a possible WP:TFA on its upcoming 25th anniversary this September, along with tons of other transit articles that are in dire need of some attention. SounderBruce 14:14, 30 April 2015 (UTC)
- Glad to see someone with a focus. - Jmabel | Talk 14:56, 30 April 2015 (UTC)

Requested move: Broadway, Seattle
Concerning whether to focus the article on the street (which would use Broadway (Seattle) in accordance with WP:USST standards) or the neighborhood (which would retain the current Broadway, Seattle name to match other neighborhoods), or to split the two entirely (moving the neighborhood content to Broadway District, Seattle or something similar). Please discuss at Talk:Broadway, Seattle. SounderBruce 19:48, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
Housing discrimination in Seattle
The Seattle Civil Rights & Labor History Project at UW has a trove of material that we should be using to expand Seattle and related articles. Currently there is no mention of redlining and racially restrictive covenants in the Seattle article, or in History of Seattle or the Timeline of Seattle or Demographics of Seattle. Columbia City, Seattle is the only article I could find that makes passing mention of housing discrimination. The History article claims that Seattle's neighborhoods evolved organically with no central planing, but there is of course decades of evidence that racial segregationist policies are the reason for the current racial makeup of the city. There are excellent maps that illustrate this over time, which we should be able to reproduce with various mapping tools, as well as copy any maps out of copyright or made by government sources.
It's particularly interesting to note that this is not ancient history. Position 9 City Council Candidate Bill Bradburd has strongly denounced the UW findings, and the Mayor's Housing Report specifically because it includes the conclusion that Seattle single family neighborhood's are the result of a segregationist past. It appears that those who oppose upzoning, adding density to single family areas, etc, in favor of the status quo, find it politically uncomfortable to say how Seattle's neighborhoods got this way.
I know this sounds very POV to say, but housing segregation in Seattle is a historical fact with zero opposition from credible historians. Wikipedia's policy is to generally conform to that, while giving adequate attention to the significant modern political movement that denies it. Given that even a Featured Article like Seattle makes no mention of this history, it's not surprising that much of the public believes it never happened here.
So there's a great opportunity to expand several articles to cover this history, and the UW has done most of the work for us. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 21:18, 26 July 2015 (UTC)
Too High and Too Steep: When Seattle's hills came falling down and Reshaping Seattle's Topography
The Seattle Times had an article on a book about the regrading of Seattle in the 2015-09-07 Labor Day edition. It particularly concentrated on Denny Hill & had pictures. There is much more at the website if you can access it:
- Upchurch, Michael (2015-09-07). "'Too High & Too Steep': When Seattle's hills came falling down". Seattletimes.com. p. B3. Retrieved 2015-09-07.
The article is a review/summary of this book:
- Williams, David B (2015). Too High and Too Steep: Reshaping Seattle's Topography. Seattle, WA: University of Washington Press. ISBN 9780295995045. OCLC 919495832.
The book was either published last month (e-book?) or will be published this month (print book?), but is currently available online if you have access to EBSCOhost or lib.myilibrary.com (follow the OCLC # link above to get to those).
There is a YouTube video on the book:

Canal through Beacon Hill
Has anyone heard of the project to build a canal through Beacon Hill mentioned at http://kuow.org/post/they-were-crazy-seattleites-who-shaped-our-city? I created and partly populated Category:Capitol Hill, Seattle. Please feel free to add this category to any and all appropriate Wikipedia articles. I think it would be a good idea to create categories for some other Seattle neighborhoods, too, in order to group sites, landmarks, NRHPs, businesses, etc. by geographic area. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:50, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
- I agree that most of the neighborhoods need their own category. Frankly, major overhauls to the neighborhood coverage on this site are long overdue and I'd be glad to add that to my never-ending to-do list. SounderBruce 22:51, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
Draft:Kelly O up for deletion
Does anyone want to stop Draft:Kelly O from being deleted? It seems likely that Kelly O will be the subject of a significant article in the near future, and so keeping a copy of Draft:Kelly O around would save us some work. I don't know of any harm in having the draft available. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 19:38, 19 May 2016 (UTC)

Project members are invited to participate in the AfD discussion re: Portland Women March Against Hate. I've expressed an interest in moving the article to March Against Hate, and expanding its scope to cover more than just Portland. I welcome editors to either contribute to the ongoing discussion or help expand this article's section for other cities, including Seattle.
