Final Fantasy XIII: RPG or Action RPG?

An unregistered user or two is not content with calling Final Fantasy XIII an RPG, with one giving it the 'Action' and 'Tactical' monocles as well, while the latest is determined to call it an Action RPG. I would just call it an RPG, but what do other people think? I don't want this to become an edit war. (Update, 16.37: I have checked the definition of Action RPG, and the way XIII plays seems against the Action RPG article in many respects, in that it uses menus rather than direct button commands, and there is certainly more of a slant on turn-based and ATB combat rather than combat on demand. I've adjusted the said article accordingly, but it can easily be changed again if others disagree. I still need opinions here.) --ProtoDrake (talk) 15:30, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

Action RPG is all done in real time and have freedom to move around and instead of menu based attack, attacks are connected to the buttons. Let's just call it an RPG. any other name without sources is original research.Lucia Black (talk) 16:04, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
I agree with Lucia on this one. FFXIII is obviously a console role-playing game as with all other titles in the FF series. Action RPGs, for example, include the Kingdom Hearts series (three of which I have contributed to featured status, including the first game obviously). Should the article be moved to Characters of the Final Fantasy IV series for consistency with FFVII and FFXIII characters articles? Jonathan Hardin' (talk) 22:32, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

Yes, since it includes The After Years characters. --PresN 22:37, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
Sure, sounds good.Lucia Black (talk) 22:38, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
Wait, just noticed the article for the KH series is Characters of Kingdom Hearts. Should this also be moved or is this a different case? I'm not sure what's best ("...series" is more precise but that makes for quite long article names). Jonathan Hardin' (talk) 22:46, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
It seems "Kingdom Hearts" is the name for the series aswell, and unlike VII, IV, and XIII (not really for XIII) there is no confirmed name. But it wouldn't hurt to rename "Characters of the Kingdom Hearts series".Lucia Black (talk) 22:52, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
I think "Characters of Kingdom Hearts" is fine- the first line is even "Kingdom Hearts is a series". "Final Fantasy IV", on the other hand, is just that game, and not the name of the miniseries as a whole, so it should be "the Final Fantasy IV series". --PresN 22:55, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
Alright, page moved! Jonathan Hardin' (talk) 23:13, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

Charts updated again

And the "by quality" one is looking really good- every month gets better! ([1]) --PresN 02:09, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

wow that's some improvement for one month.Lucia Black (talk) 02:26, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

Since Final Fantasy Tactics (series) got axed, I was considering also axing Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles series considering its mainly universe info and hardly any coverage of it as a series. What do you all think?Lucia Black (talk) 05:39, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

It's a bit more tricky because without this article the FFCC games would have no obvious parent article at all. If this series article can't be expanded, maybe a List of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles media would be good? Though I remember Akitoshi Kawazu being very vocal about the latter games so maybe with that and the whole Game Designers Studio there may be just enough content out there to write a real series article. Jonathan Hardin' (talk) 00:00, 8 May 2013 (UTC)
We could try to make the original Crystal Chronicles article the parent, thoughts? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 20:04, 10 May 2013 (UTC)

More than 1/3 GA+!

As of today, more than 1/3 of all of our articles are Good Articles, Featured Articles, or Featured Lists. Which, you know, I think is pretty cool, and worth point out. --PresN 04:14, 10 May 2013 (UTC)

That is very cool to me too. I have a feeling getting 1/2 is coming close.Lucia Black (talk) 04:53, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
Go team! We are also approaching 2/3 C+, so the floor keeps being raised. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 20:09, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
Congrats guys. I'd love to be more involved, but full-time jobs tho. Maybe when things calm down a little on my end. Anyway, keep it up! Axem Titanium (talk) 22:30, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
Good work, everyone! I plan to be more involved in the GA nominations or make some things GA like character articles such as Characters of Final Fantasy VI. Lord Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 00:59, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
Characters lists can become GA or they have to become FL?Tintor2 (talk) 01:01, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
I think they can become GA or if possible, they can become FL. Lord Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 01:03, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
I believe that the Character pages should be articles, because they are not really lists at all, they are huge blocks of text just like an article. That's why we changed all the titles of those articles to "Characters of" a month or two ago, to standardize this approach. I agree though, we should get them to GA status. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 01:07, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

Chrono titles in danger of losing its status?

Considering the past issue of Final Fantasy XII losing its featured topic status, i was looking at Characters of Chrono Trigger and Characters of Chrono Cross arent included. If one to have noticed this, it probably leave another threat to have it be removed from featured status. I was wondering if one would help me on that so it wouldnt come to that. I'm only familiar with Chrono Trigger, not Chrono cross. On another note, Music of Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross are at least at GA status. So adding them as part of the featured topic wont be an issue.Lucia Black (talk) 07:05, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

Now hear me out on this... I think that we should consider doing a Characters of the Chrono series article by merging the two. The articles are still very poor, and have characters that track between the games. That way, one robust article that covers everything and keeps to topic whole.Judgesurreal777 (talk) 17:49, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
Characters of Chrono Cross are way too long. It would be too convoluted. Im not sure it would be a good idea. Especially with Chrono Cross having over 20 playable characters.Lucia Black (talk) 18:01, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
I kind of think that the Characters of Chrono Cross article should be taken out back and shot. The flipside of the game having 40 characters is that none of them are individually notable or have any sort of reception or development info. Chrono Trigger has core, recognizable characters, but Cross just has a ton of filler. --PresN 23:43, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

I dont know. well lets work on at least work on them see what we can find. I wont mind axing the chrono cross characters as long as consensus agrees.Lucia Black (talk) 01:33, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

  • Personally, I don't see a problem with the topic right now. Its called "Chrono titles". It has the video games in the series. The reason FF 12 was a problem was because it didn't have everything FF 12 related in its topic at the time. So I don't see any huge problem this one has. GamerPro64 13:33, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
  • For a time, I had been working on the "Characters of Chrono Cross" article, but I've been taking an extended break from it. It was rather difficult work, between the sheer number of characters, and the complexity of the plot, with it including both time travel and alternate dimensions. I'll likely take a stab at it again, but I don't know if I'd ever get it to GA or FA type status.
  • As PresN was saying, there's not much in the way of development/reception on individual characters. There's a lot of reception for the cast as a whole. (ie x website thought the cast was too big, Y website was impressed so many of the characters were interesting, etc) and there dev info regarding the setting and some of the core cast, due to coverage detailing the connections between CC and RD, but there's still a ton of holes to fill with much of the rest of the cast.
  • I'm against merging the two character articles too, CC is too much to handle as it is... Sergecross73 msg me 01:05, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

This article is under assault by vandals again, and not the regular kind that you revert and that's it, they are relentless. Time for some ip blocks and semi protection unless we want the article to be called "Final Fantasy 4.0" and the official language to be "horse bird". Judgesurreal777 (talk) 10:50, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

Final Fantasy portal

Hey, I'm cleaning up the Portal:Final Fantasy, for absolutely no good reason besides the fact that it seems that no portal that's been put up for featured has been rejected in years. If anyone has any suggestions for things to put in it, let me know- otherwise, the layout as it is will stay, and I'll just keep putting featured article blurbs into the random rotation. Also- if anyone knows of any Did You Knows for Final Fantasy articles that aren't already listed at Portal:Final Fantasy/Did you know let me know- we don't have a lot, and I'm willing to go pretty tangential to fill it out. --PresN 02:16, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

One thing I noticed is the color scheme... So grey, could we make it more ff-like, perhaps white and blue? Otherwise great job updating the content! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 02:47, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
Lightened it up a bit and added a header bar. --PresN 18:18, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
Looks great! Can we nominate it at some point to be a featured portal? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 20:44, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
Yep! I'm looking for some images for the articles (free-use ones are hard to find), and then I'm going to tweak the wording a bit so that the lengths of everything stay pretty consistent (mostly done already, it's just that images will change things), and then FPC! FPC seems to take months, so maybe by Fall. --PresN 21:17, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

Next featured article

Wonderful! You guys did so great and got Final Fantasy XIII-2 to featured status, that's awesome! I wanted to talk about an article we all could work on next for FA. For example, if we got Final Fantasy XIV to GA and then FA, we could revive our featured topic. Or, we still have the first five games, as well as seven we could get to FA next. Thoughts? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 13:57, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

Yes! I knew we could do it if we tried. To think what the article looked like a year ago... And now look at it! Yay! --ProtoDrake (talk) 14:13, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

XV redirect problem

I typed in Final Fantasy XV and got redirected to Final Fantasy Versus XIII, a relic from that moving fiasco from yesterday. Since nothing is confirmed, can someone delete the redirect page? It may have to be created again, but for now Versus XIII is Versus XIII. --ProtoDrake (talk) 15:08, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

Fixed; I actually had to redo the whole move, since the move back was done via copy and paste, leaving the whole article history behind at FFXV. Ugh, I wish people wouldn't make drastic changes to articles based on unconfirmed rumors. --PresN 15:37, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

LR:FFXIII look-over needed.

I have been doing some major work on the article, getting it up to date, putting in more references. I would like some other editors within this project to have a look and see whether it can be improved and/or refined. The thing I am feeling a little uncertain about is the release date category, since the recent news says its releasing in November 2013 in Japan, and 2014 in North America and Europe. --ProtoDrake (talk) 21:46, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

We need consensus as to what kind of template should be used, given the recent announcement of Versus XIII as Final Fantasy XV. Help, suggestions and opinions needed urgently. --ProtoDrake (talk) 17:15, 12 June 2013 (UTC)

Possible new "Characters of" article

I have been thinking about this for a little while now, and an edit I did on Final Fantasy XV's article brought it to the fore in my mind. Now that a reasonable amount of info has come out about them, would it be jumping the gun to start off an article titled Characters of Final Fantasy XV? Or is it too early? Opinions are needed.

That depends, what is out there on these characters? Do we already have interviews by game makers, concept and creation type info? Reaction to the characters? Gotta make sure we arent creating a permanent Start article that never improves. But if you found stuff, I say go right ahead. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 21:42, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, thinking about it... It's way, way too early. Best to do it once the game is out, so everything can be brought to bear, and later add detail through later interviews and the inevitable Ultimanias.

Tomb Raider 2013 and Hitman Absolution

Can I include this as a Square-Enix Titles? zerohot99 (talk) 02:38, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

they are part of eidos branch of square enix, and our scope specifically states we dont include them.Lucia Black (talk) 11:36, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
That being said, we specifically said that if someone was interested in including them and would like WP:SE's support in improving them, our scope could organically expand to include them. Article popularity report

Alright, I know I stopped summarizing the monthly article popularity report a while back due to lack of reader interest, but I thought I'd point out that according to the latest stats, when you sort by page views you have to go all the way down to position #64 to find a Start-class article- everything higher-ranked is C-class or higher. (and down to #175 to find a list that isn't featured... yet.) That's pretty damn awesome, I think, and deserves some notice- hats off to Judgesurreal777, who's been the one really pushing the Start -> C drive these last few months, and applause for everyone who's been involved in this 2013 article improvement drive so far- this is the biggest push we've had since 2009, and a strong indicator of why this is one of the few video game projects that has survived over the past five years without going dormant like so many others. --PresN 06:53, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

yes, i do agree Judgesurreal777 has helped alot in this start to C drive and has also helped alot in hounding GA-material articles as well(i hope that comes off as a compliment, i know the word "hounding" isn't always a positive one in wikipedia). Chrono characters sources

Hey all, New Age Retro Hippie dropped a bunch of sources on me that could be used to expand the Characters of Chrono Trigger article, and I thought I should share them here if anyone wants to take a crack at working on that article or breaking the characters out into their own articles (As NARH has done for Crono). They're arranged by character because that's how they were given to me, but there are a lot of duplicate entries so it's not as many sources as it appears. Squall Article

I am confused as to why the Squall Leonhart article is rated as Low Importance. Giving the Importance Scale a quick look over, should it not be a mid considering that he is the main protaganist in the game. The Mid-Importance Criteria says "Most people and characters involved in the community of Square Enix will be rated in this level."

On an entirely different note however, I am trying to gauge opinion on putting the article forward for FAC on its talk page. Any comments about what i can do to improve the article would be greatly appreciated. --Bailo26 11:36, 9 August 2013 (UTC)

It's "low" because no one really bothers keeping the importance ratings even, just the quality ratings. Change it if you want. As far as an FAC, given that it was made a GA in 2006, (though it looks like Tintor2 has been improving it over the years, I'd recommend doing a PR before taking it to FAC. Actually, I'd recommend taking a fine tooth comb over it yourself in any case to fix grammar issues, content gaps, etc.- if nothing else, FAC is generally pretty dismissive of articles when the nominator hasn't done a lot of work on it themselves, and I see that you've only done 3 edits to Squall. --PresN 05:16, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for your input. Its true, i haven't done much to it yet. I'm considering it my new project. --Bailo26 11:36, 9 August 2013 (UTC)

Final Fantasy VIII Ultimania interviews translated

Thanks to the efforts of user Gwendal on GameFAQs, the FFVIII Ultimania interviews have now been translated to English! You can read them over at http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/197343-final-fantasy-viii/66115498 Jonathan Hardin' (talk) 12:09, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

I know this subject has been up here before, but there has been a thing (quite recently on this page) where it was used as a source. And that got me thinking again. I freely admit that the site often plays host to stories that are either not important enough to merit inclusion, are better sourced elsewhere or are just about videos and batches of screenshots. But, like this interview here, another one here and a translated version from another site here, it's also a place where information can be found nowhere else. And it is referenced by several other, reputable sites as an alright source. And there is a GA or FA somewhere (note sure whether it's Final Fantasy XII Characters of Final Fantasy XII or Fortress) that uses a different FF-"fan site" with perfect impunity. If the answer is still "no", then the answer's still "no". But the site seems to have grown well beyond its original premise into a full-blow FF news site. And there's always the old saying "Don't judge a book by its cover". --ProtoDrake (talk) 16:02, 22 August 2013 (UTC)

it could be good for interviews they conducted themselves.I don't think we should trust too much on a fansiteS in general. usually their not professionals, so any info coming from developers themselves would be nice as long as we know its coming from then and can only be found there. And their good to find translation but not good to use their translations as a source. so when they do link to another cite, we can use it.Lucia Black (talk) 04:30, 25 August 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. It's nice to have some kind of concrete decision. They do conduct several interviews themselves, and the original interview I linked sheds some light on Lightning Returns's backstory and inspirations. And if that info later comes along in a different interview from a regular site or in a Square Enix released guide book, then we can easily substitute. --ProtoDrake (talk) 07:03, 25 August 2013 (UTC)

Why isn't Drakengard part of our scope?

I see this series has been produced by square enix to some degree outside just publishing. Would it be ok to add them into our scope? I'm just asking because it seems obvious but someone may disagree.

Hmm. I don't see why not. Drag-on Dragoon 3 seems to have had a considerable amount of input from Square Enix. But, mind you, this might also be grouped with things like Eidos' properties, since Square Enix is mostly the game's publishers. --ProtoDrake (talk) 22:02, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
Well there's also the issue of Nier who was produced by an SE employee Yosuke Taito (according to the article anyways). As a series it could be implemented. I'm currently working on them to get at least B-class. If no one disagrees within a week, then it would be ok to add them in.Lucia Black (talk) 22:10, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
Well, the rule for SE-published games/series is that if they're associated with SE, and someone actually cares to work on the articles, then they're in on request. Assuming no one complains I'm cool with it- we're talking Draken 1,2,3 and the 2 Nier articles? --PresN 22:52, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
I don't think the two Nier itself needs much special attention; they are already fairly comprehensive GAs. The actual Drakengard games on the other hand need a lot of work done on them (not by me most likely, as I don't have any experience of that franchise). --ProtoDrake (talk) 23:18, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
For the record, most of my edits recently has been on games I never played (managed to get Crystal Defenders at roughly B-class). Although if its plot driven, I will do my best to edit it and then find a way to play them (for the sake of plot info). I'm personally working on the original Drakengard and will move up my way to Drakengard 3 especially since its release is coming in a few months. Right now the only difficulty I'm having is with the mass censorship of the localized version.Lucia Black (talk) 23:53, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, I GA'd Gyromancer without ever playing it- felt weird. As far as Nier goes, 1) thanks! Though Nier itself might get FA'd one day and 2) I was just specifying what articles we meant by bringing in the series to our scope- as in what's the cutoff point we're going for. --PresN 00:19, 27 August 2013 (UTC)

From what I can recall, we don't accept any publish-only brand games unless they were enix games that were republished as square enix.Lucia Black (talk) 00:24, 27 August 2013 (UTC)

Also I'm proposing eidos be part of our scope as its being recognized aas an SE brand.Lucia Black (talk) 00:26, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
Well, we cover whatever we want to cover- if it's "associated with the Square Enix brand" and someone wants to work on it, then we can include it. What Eidos/SEEurope games do you want to cover? --PresN 02:12, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
Only the games that have been developed and released after eidos became a subsidiary.Lucia Black (talk) 02:14, 27 August 2013 (UTC)

I managed to drag myself through fixing up List of DS:Style products, so that'll get FLC'd in a month or so when my current FLC finished, but as to the final two- List of Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibōken chapters and List of Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibōken episodes - I find myself at a loss. These are two completely unsourced spinoff lists of a completely unsourced article (Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibōken), and I have no idea as to the guidelines on if they should even exist in the first place, much less where I would go about finding sources for an early 90's anime/manga series- I haven't ever spent any time with the anime/manga projects. Does anyone have any idea about where I should begin? --PresN 19:16, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

XIII Ultimania Omega info piece: Help needed

This is an appeal to anyone who can help. I have been looking everywhere for a specific page number for a piece of info held in the Final Fantasy XIII Ultimania Omega. It's from an interview with one of the artists on the game, and it concerns the Eidolons: they were designed to be more than just summons, with them also representing inner characteristics or wants of their masters. The only two specifically mentioned are Lightning (Odin - father figure) and Snow (Shiva Sisters - Lightning and Serah). I'm doing this for The info is in there somewhere, and it would be extremely useful in an article I'm working on, but I need the page number. The article is for Lightning herself. I can't just reference the book as a whole for something this specific, as that might undermine the article as a whole. I didn't post on the article's talk page, because I thought that would not get the response it needs. So, can anyone help here? I would willingly help with something else in return if anyone wants. --ProtoDrake (talk) 21:23, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

You sure it's the Omega, not the Scenario? Talk:Final Fantasy XIII/Ultimania translations has the images and the best attempts at OCR that I could do for a bunch of interviews, but for the Omega I only have Voice Actors and Producer/Director interviews. The Artist one in the Scenario doesn't have anything about the Eidolons in the bit I have OCR'd, though. --PresN 21:48, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
Unfortunately, I'm quite sure. Everything I've heard or read says it's in the Omega. But I can still run the Scenario scans past someone on the Final Fantasy Wiki who specializes in translation. Maybe we'll strike lucky. Oh botheration, why can't Square Enix in America and Europe translate and release the things in English? Surely there's a viable market for them? It makes everything so difficult sometimes. --ProtoDrake (talk) 22:09, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
Or at the very least why can't someone scan the table of contents for them all! --PresN 22:22, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
Well, I think I've found something now. I had overlooked one of the most obvious places to go, somewhere that gives page numbers of various sections of books related to the Final Fantasy series. I've found the most logical place for that info to be, and I think I can add the reference now. Not quite as exact as I'd like, but much better than nothing. --ProtoDrake (talk) 07:00, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

I have decided to review the article, as I have had very little to do with it personally and I feel up to the task. I have left notes on the review page, and would be glad if someone would see if they can be dealt with, or at least answered. I have put the review on hold until this is done. --ProtoDrake (talk) 20:12, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Looks like Lucia popped back up; I'm willing to take over that or any other WPSE GANs if the nominator disappears- I know Judge has a bunch that are sitting there and he's been missing for a while. --PresN 21:07, 30 September 2013 (UTC)
