Untitled

So, there's not been much work on this in a while. Is this the proper place to make suggestions?

  • A list of notable places near the station, perhaps crosslinked back from those places.
  • The address or intersection of the station

Any other suggestions? The project as it exists now is pretty bare bones.

A style note - should the 'previous', 'next' be West-East or East-West? Usual notation is to do East-West, but I've always envisioned the Washington Metro as going West to East. ;) Maybe it should be on a per-system basis, or abandoned altogether?

Also, do you have any comment on my naming proposal?

The naming convention makes more sense your way; I've already moved Tenleytown-AU and Metro Center to reflect it. I usually think of it as West-to-East, because that's the way I'm usually headed; but I think it's up to us on this one. Meelar 06:55, 22 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Yeah, I've gone with west-east, north-south, clockwise. In things like the Red Line, where most of the line was N-S but separated by a small W-E segment at the southern end, I used that segment to determine the order. --Golbez 13:58, 30 Mar 2004 (UTC)

I got rid of the line colors; blue on blue would be unreadable. I also hard-coded the width, since it makes it a little more attractive.

This doesn't specifically belong here, but since I linked the lines, might as well mention it, and taking a cue from existing pages Blue Line (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) and Circle Line. Personally, I like the former format better, and makes me wonder if we shouldn't use a similar format for stations? (I hate waffling like this...) like, "Foggy Bottom-GWU (Washington Metro station)"? I dunno. But as for line names, I like the parenthetical form better, because 'Blue Line' is pretty generic, yet I can't think of a way to incorporate the description; "Blue Line of the Washington Metro"? Seems a bit long winded. I think I prefer "Blue Line (Washington Metro)". --Golbez 07:49, 22 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Here's a general question: How much detail is too fine detail? OK, we're doing subway stops. What about general rail stations? Or ferry stations? Or bus stations, for that matter? Has anyone here seen what we over at the WikiProject Melbourne have done with Melbourne's railways? The basic line table we've got is like this: (note that it was created before seeing any of the tables here)

Structure debate

Can we enhance the recommended structure? Something like

  • Name(s) of station, geographical location, overview of lines served.
  • Detail on the station
    • Lines and destinations served. Frequency of trains. Train-platform guides.
    • Transport interchange facilities (tube, tram, bus, taxi)
    • Description of the station. Number and layout of platforms, architecture, open or barrier entry
    • Facilities. Shops, waiting rooms, toilets, any of the sort of data found, for example, here
  • Area served
    • Description of area; facilities available nearby the station; geo-relationship to the area, town or settlement served (direction, time to walk)
    • Notable locations in the vicinity (museums, architecture, attractions &c ... and reciprocal links from the attraction page on wikipedia)
  • History of the railway station
    • Date built, history of construction, railway company involved
    • Architectural style; significant rebuilds
  • Trivia & miscellaneous
  • External links
    • Timetable(s), live departure boards &c.
    • Station information pages
    • Map(s), satellite photos

Articles for the Wikipedia 1.0 project

Hi, I'm a member of the Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team, which is looking to identify quality articles in Wikipedia for future publication on CD or paper. We recently began assessing using these criteria, and we are looking for A-class, B-class, and Good articles, with no POV or copyright problems. Can you recommend any suitable articles? Commons category organisation

I've started to split the Commons:Category:Train stations in the United Kingdom in the same way as Category:Railway stations in the United Kingdom here. I've categorised all images/sub cats and England, Scotland and Wales. I've also done some but not all of the splitting of England into counties. Naming

I disagree with the naming aspect - to say "X is a railway station" isn't really right in all cases. Often X can be the name of the suburb, so "X railway station is located on the Y line"... or something along these lines would be more appropriate. (JROBBO 05:44, 2 August 2006 (UTC))

Sydney stations

These are CityRail's best efforts so far - Redfern railway station, Sydney and Central railway station, Sydney. They are by no means finished (some more history stuff could be added), but that's the aim for all the CityRail articles. (JROBBO 05:44, 2 August 2006 (UTC))

Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Yeouinaru Station

As we have one of the most daunting completion tasks in Wikipedia (I doubt there can ever be a "completion"), some stations we have not been able to be written beyond a stub yet and there's still debate on the inclusion criteria of stations (see User talk:Mangoe/Wikipedia is not a timetable), but for now, per WP:AFDP, all stations are allowed. There is one subway station in Seoul, Korea, Yeouinaru Station, that is up for AfD. I was engaged in some meandering argument with one user (my inclination is to keep), but I thought it be appropriate to seek input from editors here on this AfD as this is directly related to this project. --Oakshade 07:21, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Railroad employee-only stations

Is a railroad station that only serves employees of the railroad (and not open to the general public except for railroad guests) notable? I know there are articles about railroad/subway yards and maintainence facilities, however. The example I am bringing up is Boland's Landing (LIRR station). Tinlinkin 13:00, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Unique Position of Lakeland & Jacksonville, Florida

If I do a page on Lakeland(Amtrak station), as I want to do, I'm going to have lots of trouble with the infobox down at the bottom.

The problem with it is that it indicates that the Silver Star goes towards New York at either of it's next stops. It doesn't. When it goes to Winter Haven, it goes towards Miami. In Tampa, it stops there, and goes in either direction. In the case of Jacksonville, if the Sunset Limited is revived, I'm worried that the direction will be all wrong compared to the Silver Meteor & Silver Star. ---- DanTD 20:21, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Amtrak & Local stations

I'm currently trying to find out how many local mass transit systems connect to Amtrak stations. What is the closest station to the Amtrak Atlanta, Houston, and other major cities, or do they share use with Amtrak? ---- DanTD 17:02, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Amtrak station notability

There seems to be stub articles for almost every amtrak station in the U.S. many of which are not notable in any sense of the word other than the fact they are train stations, it seems to me due to the fact that a large number of the articles within Category:Amtrak stations are stubs with zero sources and a couple external links to Amtrak that they have little hope of ever being more than stubs. I would suggest someone consider merging many of these articles into main articles such as Amtrak stations in Illinois as is I am seriously considering Afding a whole bunch of these articles but thought I would come here first. I believe every Amtrak station, even the "less notable" ones, has its right to an article, even a concise one, as is the case for other countries such as the UK where even minor halts also have their articles. Please do not AFD any of these station articles, thank you!!! LHOON 08:46, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
It's quite incorrect to assert that there are no sources; those links you dismiss so casually contain all basic and necessary information about each station. There's definitely room for expansion, that no one has done so yet is no criteria for deletion (but then, neither is notability). Mackensen (talk) 11:36, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
The previous editors are quite right. There are many sources on all stations. WikiProject Trains and WikiProject Stations are gigantic never-ending projects. As there are so many stations in the country (and world) and with a limited amount of train-dedicated editors, it's close to impossible to have full beautiful articles on all stations. Every day it gets a little better. I put my mouse where my mouth is and created quite a few station articles that are beyond stubs (San Bernardino Station for example). But an article not having expansion yet doesn't mean its topic is non-notable. --Oakshade 15:28, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

While many may be notable there are bound to be just as many that are not, and notability is oft a reason articles are deleted, I am not quite sure where the impression that it isn't came from. Just because some train stations are notable doesn't mean all train stations are notable, I mean I wouldn't try to write an article about a tiny airport in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere. I am just saying. All train stations aren't notable just because there is a WikiProject. One which is fine with me and I respected the editors of enough to come here with the question, to imply that I casually dismissed anything here is quite erroneous indeed.   • May not technically be so, but the fact of the matter is, articles are deleted because they are about non notable subjects all the time.   • I'm not jumping down your throat, but I am trying to suggest that submitting a station served by a national rail system is a non-starter. There was a long debate at Wikipedia talk:Places of local interest, the general consensus of which was that such stations automatically merit inclusion. That most of them are stubs is unfortunate, but give a man a stub and he'll expand it someday. Mackensen (talk) 11:14, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
Now I feel like I am getting somewhere but surely not all of these could be significantly expanded, although I know many can and may better serve readers combined somehow, if a majority of stations are very notable then those will develop into articles. Many of these stations, especially those in small cities and towns, are listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Take the Plano article above, it appeared non-notable alone to me at first glance but I confirmed that it was indeed the depot listed on the Register, which is why I said considering in the first place. My point is that if a station doesn't have a long history it is unlikely to yield much of an article beyond ridership stats, thus it might be a candidate for merger. I don't think condensing information to make it more accessible is necessarily a bad thing. It is what I originally suggested, though my impression was the most stations couldn't be expanded significantly and now it seems the opposite is true. It's not like I had a vendetta against train station articles when I came here. : ) IvoShandor 11:32, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
First of all, great work on the Plano article! As a matter of principle I would take eight stubs over one merged article, because I find individual articles easier to work with (I expanded on this idea during said prior discussion). Broadly, Amtrak stations can be grouped into three categories: (1) stations originally built during the Golden Age of railroading, rich in history and tradition; (2) rump stations located on the site/down the street from the original station which stand as proof of civic neglect; (3) new stations built since 1970, which since the 1990s often form part of a county-wide intermodal complex (see Kalamazoo Transportation Center for a mix of #1 and #3). Now, it seems to me that the first and third categories are obvious keepers as standalone articles. The second is trickier, but I suspect that in almost all cases there's a story to tell concerning why there's an Amshack instead of a real station. Mackensen (talk) 12:05, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

(undent)Thanks, it has plenty of room for expansion too. I will set up a commons gallery too, with the images I took the other day in my Plano, Illinois photography tour of Registered Historic Places, see my station gallery. (This is only the second railroad station I have shot, but I did get to do Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad Depot (Oregon, Illinois) over the winter). I struggled with this as well but in a case where an article is very likely to remain a stub for a very long time they may be better combined, I was sad at first when I started doing this to the articles on Houses in Sycamore Historic District but I like it that way now. Certainly there may be stories to tell but whether or not those stories can be found in reliable sources is another thing entirely, this is why I combined the articles in the houses and churches and such of that historic district, sparse information. I suppose, ultimately, its more or less a project consideration. I won't AfD any of these but I still suggest considering assessing which articles are unlikely to go significant expansion in the future and combine them, they can always be broken off later if necessary. I checked on those images you've got for Plano CB & Q station article, and I didn't find them. In any case, judging by Mackensen 's standards, I've seen plenty of artices that were written like #2, when in fact they fall into #1, and should be merged with them, especially along the old Atlantic Coast Line, Seaboard Air Line, and other historic stations. I've already started lists of old depots with the same names for two different railroads, like St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railroad Depot, Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway Passenger Depot, and one other, that I forgot about. Either way, I'd like to see more of them added, and more people merging stations where it's necessary. ---- DanTD 18:13, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Due to its history or expressed opinions, I believe that this wikiproject would be interested in a Sprawl Control Proposal currently in development. Please note that the idea is not deletionist, and advocates retention of all suitable material, by current definitions. If you oppose the idea in principal, please do not attempt to discourage its development. The intent is that all views may be integrated into a proposal that may achieve the stated aims and be acceptable to as wide an audience as possible.

It is thus felt that it is particularly important that relevant wikiprojects participate in the formulation of the proposal.

North White Plains Metro North maps

I added on the page for the North White Plains Metro North station links to two "maps & directions" sites: Ask.com & HopStop.com. The links allow the reader to navigate directly to these sites' map of 1 Haarlem Avenue, and offer directions using walking and public-transportation to and from the station. New York City Subway station naming convention

Over at WP:NYCPT, we are trying to reach a consensus on how New York City Subway stations should be named, because the subway system uses various names and punctuation formats for its stations, and users have "move-warred" articles in the absence of an agreed-upon guideline. The proposed convention is at Wikipedia:WikiProject New York City Public Transportation/New York City Subway/Station naming convention. Infobox query

I was wondering, can we add optional National Register of Historic Places date, architect, and architectural style(s) parameters to the stations infobox, it would go a long way toward solving the relatively silly inclusion of two infoboxes on some articles. Article names for US stations

There is a discussion at WP:TWP suggesting that article names for US stations should follow the now established "Foo railway station, region" naming convention as is currently used on the majority of British and Australian station articles.
