Task force activity and member interest, 2020

Hello fellow task force members!

Many of the fourteen members listed on our member page seem to be entirely inactive or no longer specifically active in the Women's Ice Hockey Task Force. With this in mind, I’d like to propose a new “inactive members” section on the member page, where the names of those no longer contributing can be recorded in deference to their past contributions. My hope is that, by identifying and engaging those still active, the task force will better serve as a resource and place of active discussion and collaboration. If no concerns are raised, I would like to make the proposed edit to the member page on Monday, 27 July 2020.

I would also suggest that all active members add a description indicating specific areas of interest/expertise and note their willingness to serve as a resource to other task force members. This would make it easier for members with overlapping interests to potentially collaborate on edits, expansions, or new articles, and for new editors to identify the users most likely to engage in a particular topic or to have quality reference suggestions.

Since these changes would apply to everyone (and I’m hoping for feedback), all currently listed members have been pinged as follows:

Recognizing that this post is somewhat outside of the norm, I hope you’ll forgive the liberties I’ve taken with the guidelines. My intentions are wholly positive but I’m the first to admit that most of what I know about Wikipedia decorum has been learned through sanction. Hey Spitzmausk, I occasionally update US Collegiate Division I womens' hockey, and I have a rather prolific catalog of articles. I know that @Mark Staffieri: has similar interests. I always look at the monthly 'pings' we get as contributors, but haven't contributed much there, although I'd like to find a niche. Many thanks for the check in.   • I don't have any specific expertise, but I speak French and Swedish as well as English, so I can always contribute for the sport in countries where those languages are predominant. I don't really have any concerns about your proposal, but it might be worth considering doing a recruitment drive (or something of the sort) to try and get some more active members.   • Spitzmauskc - Rather than spending time researching members' activity levels, why not expand the to-do lists and share that with all members? You may get some older editors more involved that way. If you (and others) want to add your specific interests to the Member page, go forth. Hmlarson (talk) 16:32, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
  • Spitzmauskc - Hey there! I'm still interested, I guess sometimes I just don't know where to start. Even when I've added pages for male athletes, I have gotten a lot of pushback on whether or not the person is "significant enough," like what are the criteria for being significant enough for their own wiki page? As far as like women's hockey goes, would it be... They get drafted to an NWHL team? They win the Isobel Cup? They make their country's team for international competition? I would just appreciate some guidance so I don't run into the issues I've had before with other editors. Thank you for checking in! Summrsun16 (talk) 00:47, 25 July 2020 (UTC)

      Bill McKenna It’s great to hear that you’re still interested in the group, particularly as it is clear that you and Mark Staffieri are responsible for a truly incredible number of pages and edits in the realm of NCAA DI woho. I’ll be starting a new discussion below where the group can discuss priorities and areas of collaboration. If there are any collegiate pages or topics that you feel are most in need of edits (updates, expansions, new pages, etc.), I hope you will share them there.
      NHCLS My original message was inspired by the fantastic number of woho articles you’ve been churning out recently and it’s wonderful to hear that you’re interested in growing the task force. Your linguistic abilities are a very welcome surprise and a great resource. Recruiting more members would be ideal but I have to admit that I don’t know what comprises a WikiProject membership drive. Any pointers?
      Hmlarson Its great to know that long-time members are still interested and active. Most of my contributions relate to women’s ice hockey in Finland, though I have done some edits for other nations and leagues. NHCLS and I have recently made many additions to the to-do lists, particularly articles for creation. I hope that you and other editors from the 2017 group will find something of interest there. I’ll be starting a new discussion below for the group to discuss priorities and areas of collaboration, your input would be appreciated.
  • Hi everyone. I admit that I haven't been active as I meant to be. I have been busy editing pages on women in religion and women in sailing. But I am a big hockey fan, and would like to contribute. It would be helpful to have a shared goal to work on, as that might help me prioritize. Women in Red has a sports focus that will conclude at the end of August, so maybe now would be a good time to ask for editors' help. Maybe we could pick one thing we would like help with in August, and ask for some extra editors to pitch in? PMCH2 (talk) 17:25, 27 July 2020 (UTC)
    • @PMCH2: Recruiting help from Women in Red is an excellent idea. I’ve been (slowly) attempting to improve the Wikidata items from their Missing ice hockey articles list. If you are willing/able to formally request the project’s help, it would be very helpful (I’m not sure how one goes about making such a request).
