I can translate and set up new navigation boxes in English ... they will need to have links to English articles, though. Do these French articles all have English equivalents? (I'm not involved in sports myself, I saw a mention of this project on another project's discussion page, and thought I would see what's happening here. Excellent initiative.)

I'm creating a few articles on my user space about members of the current Canberra Capitals squad with the intention of taking all those ones to DYK. :)

I added some sections to the "sandbox" article and will try to add some more information to it tomorrow. Is this article intended to include professional leagues, university-level leagues, and also amateur leagues? I assume we will exclude amateur leagues (or the article will be too long!) Amateur leagues are so numerous, they should have a separate article (articles). I'm just asking so that I understand what the focus of this article will be. Speaking of adding "top level" women's sports articles, some of the national sports associations for women have very interesting history articles on their sites, that make a great starting point for some future articles. In fact the idea to create the article origin of debates surrounding this Template:Major Leagues. At no time, they wanted to include both only really professional Women's leagues ( there namely Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) and Women's Professional Soccer (WPS)) see the debate on the Template talk:Major Leagues). And the debate is far from being ended (see Template: Major League on Kaldari talk page [2]. I had to add both Women's professionnal leagues in the page Major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada. See section Women's National Basketball Association and Women's Professional Soccer. I have then to think of grouping together on one page a summary (I indeed say a summary) on each of the most important Women's league in North America. At least as a supplement to the Template:Major women's sport leagues in North America. I classified them by sport:

Women's basketball
Women's ice hockey (one section of the page Ice hockey)
Women's soccer
Women's softball (for Softball )
Other sports (for Women's sport )

This allows the reader to have access in a clik to various articles existing. The choice to include such or such women league is arbitrary from my part. I don't know all the sports, nor all the existing Women's leaques. My choice (which is not definitive) concerned to the leagues which have a national character (and not local or regional) in our two countries ( United States and Canada). I excluded the former women's leagues (WUSA , NWHL) which do not exist any more. Thus leagues with character national which have a certain fame (accessible sources in the newspapers and magazines). Most are for character amateurs (in fact only 2 women leagues (WNBA and WPS) pay their players, the others for lack of financial means pay only transport and accommodation of the women players) The case of the women ice hockey: we have 4 most importants Leagues ( Canadian Women's Hockey League , Western Women's Hockey League , National Collegiate Women's Ice Hockey Championship and Canadian Interuniversity Sport women's ice hockey championship ) but nobody has a character professional ( Compared with the male National Hockey League). The players of the 4 women's ice hockey leaques are not paid and the audiences are very small (500 to 800 persons by match except during the playoffs where it there 3,000 to 5 000 persons). the budget of the Canadian Women's Hockey League , the most prestigious 4 leaques (prestigious because of the presence of numerous Olympian members of national teams USA - Canada) have an annual budget of $ 1.7 million with revenue $ 800,000. The television covers only championship matches and not the matches of season regular. I don't know if the situation is comparable in the other sports. In fact each of the leagues is to be studied to include them or not. Because each of the league has his particular situation. And in more it is necessary to find references. Women's basketball

In creating articles about various members of the Canberra Capitals it became clear there isn't a nice template for women basketball players. As women who have played in the WNBA and WNBL are notable, it would be nice to get a template for them. :) One that isn't as American centric with the NBA in it that the current one has. --LauraHale (talk) 20:53, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

Roller Derby

Hi - I'm trying to do something like that - I'm trying to create a wiki page for a local league in Western Australia, Western Australia Roller Derby. I'm encountering some ... resistance, which is arguing that the league (and the sport more generally) is not "notable". I'm new to this and would appreciate any help in defending the notability of the article. I would argue that between the regular newspaper and radio articles, WARD meets the notability criteria. It looks like it has notable sources to me. :/ The tags at the top suggest more problems with the writing of it, as being self promotional. (Randomly, while you may not be that interested in the Paralympics, if you can get ten points as part of Wikimedians to the Games, we can probably fly you from Perth to Canberra and the NSIC for a training session related to improving content of what you're interested in. You might want to learn how to use Wikinews because those sources are considered credible on Wikipedia, and they feed to Google News. I brought it up on Wikipedia:Australian Wikipedians' notice board‎, which could be pointed to. There is some source discussion there and others who might be useful. It looks like there is fairly extensive coverage once you figure out what keywords to look for in search newspaper databases. :) "WA Roller Derby" brought up over 50 results for me. WARD and "Roller derby" brought up about 34, of which 20 were on point. --LauraHale (talk) 19:36, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

I just had a look at the notice board - thanks for that! Quite a few of those points I had tried to make myself, but (having read some of the descriptions of the tags they applied to me), I felt they were more interested in biting the newcomer. Until roller derby becomes more mainstream and popular, I'm not sure how content can be generated without a related party trying to fight their internal COI. Wikipedia can be PITA. If you want to see a bit of a personal disaster, check out my my attempts to help on Sun State Roller Girls and the talk page. A lot of the time, it comes down to knowing where and who to ask for help, how to ask for help in compliance with Wikipedia's policies, knowing where to find sources, etc. You can edit articles with a COI. Editing Sport Biographies on Wikipedia begins to give a bit of an idea, and Paralympians have some similar issues which face roller derby. (It isn't recognised as being equal. Niche and limited audience interested in it. Media coverage can be hit or miss.) I can be really good at finding sources, have access to university databases, have a large personal library of sport related books and I'm based close enough to the National Sport Information Centre that for Australian sport, I can probably find you a sources to help with WP:GNG if it becomes an issue. :) (This list is about 4 months old but contains a fair number of materials in my personal library.) Gender gap connected to conflict aversion and lower confidence among women

Since January 2011, Wikipedia's "Gender gap" has received much attention from Wikimedians, researchers and the media – triggered by a New York Times article that cited the estimate that only 12.64% of Wikipedia contributors are female. That figure came from the 2010 UNU-MERIT study, which was based on the first global, general survey of Wikipedia users, conducted in 2008 with 176,192 respondents using a methodology that had raised some questions (e.g. about sample bias and selection bias, other studies found similarly low ratios). A new paper titled "Conflict, Confidence, or Criticism: An Empirical Examination of the Gender Gap in Wikipedia"^[1] has now delved further into the data of the UNU-MERIT study, examining the responses to questions such as "Why don't you contribute to Wikipedia?" and "Why did you stop contributing to Wikipedia?", finding strong support for the following three hypotheses:

"H1: Female Wikipedia editors are less likely to contribute to Wikipedia due to the high level of conflict involved in the editing, debating, and defending process." ("Controlling for other factors females were 26% more likely to select 'I got into conflicts with other Wikipedia contributors' as a reason for no longer contributing. The coefficients for being afraid of being 'criticized' [31% higher probability to be selected by female users as a reason against becoming more active in Wikipedia], 'yelled at', and 'getting into trouble' are all significant".)
"H2: Female Wikipedia editors are less likely to contribute to Wikipedia due to gender differences in confidence in expertise to contribute and lower confidence in the value of their contribution. "
"H3: Female contributors are less likely to contribute to Wikipedia because they prefer to share and collaborate rather than delete and change other's work."

A fourth hypothesis likewise tested a conjecture that has been brought up several times in discussion about Wikipedia's gender gap:

"H4: Female contributors are less likely to contribute to Wikipedia because they have less discretionary time available to spend contributing".

However, the paper's authors argued that this conjecture was not borne out by the data, instead finding that "men are 19% more likely to select 'I didn't have time to go on' as a reason for no longer contributing."

Help with women's national team articles

Hi. After File:FIFA national women's football teams by class.png was created, I decided I would try to create some of the wanted brown articles in my user space and then take them all to DYK. Below is a list of articles I am working on my userspace to get to length. They need some help with wikification (will get bare links last), adding more sources, improving the infobox, adding the country specific footer boxes, finding pictures, helping make them a bit more compliant with the manual of style for national team articles and adding more information.
