edit conflict[edit]

Hi TJMSmith, I think we both were editing this page at the exact same time last night. I don't know how I managed to delete some of your text. I think all is right now. I blame it all on the technology :) WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 16:01, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It's all good! Thanks for setting it up! TJMSmith (talk) 21:07, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

wikidata lists[edit]

Hi, I experimented and have managed to make Wikidata lists of women's organizations in Africa and girls' schools in Africa. If those are useful, is there a good place to move them to? Dsp13 (talk) 17:07, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dsp13, I'm not sure who monitors this page (besides me), so I am going to ping Ipigott and Rosiestep. It seems to me the lists should go in the big red box under the subtopic Wikidata redlists by topic which I have just added, (along with the place holders for your two redlists). The lists should probably be moved to Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/ but I don't want to move them myself, just in case there is an issue I am unaware of. Thanks. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 18:07, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Dsp13 and WomenArtistUpdates: Thanks for pinging me as I'm not sure I would have seen this comment otherwise. Plus, big thank you for creating new redlists!!! Would you kindly add the redlist links to Women in Red's Redlist Index? In the future, you can access this link from the Women in Red mainpage at the very top where there are icons (with links) for our "article alerts", "essays", "events", "ideas", "metrics", "outreach", "press", "redlist index", "resources", and "showcase". Again, thank you! --Rosiestep (talk) 19:32, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Specifically, place the links in the Redlist Index sections for organizations and for educational institutions. --Rosiestep (talk) 19:39, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I will leave this task to you Dsp13. My thinking cap is on the top shelf, and I would need to find step-stool first. I can try, but will let you have a go first. Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 16:33, 6 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
great, I'll have a go! Dsp13 (talk) 18:21, 6 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

contest challenge tally question[edit]

Hi Dsp13, Lajmmoore, Victuallers, and Ipigott, We have a new participant in the challenge Bookworm-ce. They created articles throughout January and February, but have just listed the articles (with relevant creation date). I propose we leave the articles listed where they are and then only include the March entries in the March tally, but include all the articles in the overall challenge. This change would have an impact on your overall standings and I ask your opinion on if you think this is fair. Please respond here. Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 19:18, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

WomenArtistUpdates, fine by me! Lajmmoore (talk) 20:26, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
WomenArtistUpdates same here! Dsp13 (talk) 20:34, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Fine by me too.--Ipigott (talk) 21:25, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Great Dsp13, Lajmmoore, and Ipigott! I'll put a note on their talk page. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 16:27, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not really interested in the competition itself, I'm rather only posting articles here for solidarity with the campaign. :) I followed Bookworm-ce's example before seeing this comment, so feel free to "only" count my articles according to whatever the rules are. Boud (talk) 02:26, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Does this article count?[edit]

Should I list sexual violence in the Tigray War 04:00, 1 February 2021‎ in my list here? This is not literally articles addressing the works or achievements of African women, it's quite the opposite, it's an article addressing widespread and systematic war crimes against African women and girls (I haven't noticed reports of male victims), possibly crimes against humanity or genocide, although that might take years to be determined legally. Filsan Abdullahi, a Minister in the federal Ethiopian government, has started investigations into these. Boud (talk) 02:26, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Boud does this include Amhara women who were raped by Tigray TPLF regional male soldiers?Clownshking (talk) 03:25, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Currently the article is quite out of date, and there are very few attributions of the perpetrators, despite many of the recent sources attributing many rapes to the EDF. Any well-sourced information of rape of Amhara girls, women, boys and/or men by TPLF soldiers of any male/female/LGBTQ gender should be added to the article; the same goes for any ethnicity of the victims. Some of the participants in WikiProject Women may quite likely keep an eye on the article to make sure that it is properly sourced and NPOVed. The most useful information will be on investigations, support groups for the victims, compensation, and/or legal cases. Yikono is one support group, but most likely there are others too. Boud (talk) 12:22, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The article is majority authored by you since started and are the majority editor of the article. So far the article is not NPOV. Seems has a bias against EDF mostly and Amhara people. Doesn’t mention the epidemic of rape in Tigray prior to the war. Does not mention TPLF releasing 10,000 hardened criminals and providing them with EDF uniforms and guns. The article is suspiciously written from the POV of TPLF propaganda in this war. And yes the Western media is duplicitous and not neutral in the coverage of the war.Clownshking (talk) 15:59, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Clownshking: To get back to the main topic of this page: if you propose some names of notable Amhara women with brief descriptions of why they are notable and preferably at least one URL, then one of the other volunteers participating here might be inspired to create articles on these Amhara women. You could also read WP:CREATE and start the article yourself in WP:DRAFT space until you feel ready to create articles directly. Boud (talk) 16:30, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have copied this conversation to Talk:Sexual violence in the Tigray War. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 16:39, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • @WomenArtistUpdates: Thank you! Was this discussion appropriate for this Talkpage? Is the subject matter appropriate for this project? If not, I apologise for responding to Boud.Clownshking (talk) 16:45, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Clownshking I didn't mean that the subject of sexual violence or rape was inappropriate, I meant that a discussion of the quality of the content of the article should be on the article's talk page, not this one. Hope that clears that up. Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 17:58, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
To get back to my specific question: should I add the article here or not? Boud (talk) 17:22, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Boud, I will ask for other opinions, but I think it is too broad a topic and may eventual include both men and women. The article on Yikono would be appropriate though. Pinging Ipigott and Rosiestep for their opinions. Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 17:54, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I certainly think this article is of interest to WiR but not as a contribution to the Africa contest.--Ipigott (talk) 19:50, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the responses. Fine by me to not include this in the current Africa contest. It's difficult to add a smiley because the topic of the article is ghastly. Boud (talk) 20:14, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

fina kurreeman draft[edit]

Hello, just joining the project. Would appreciate feedback/help on my draft—struggling to find normal news sources for WP:Notability but pretty sure that she qualifies under WP:Academic, just not sure if I have documented that fact well enough. I have tried to enrich content/linky-ness of the page by adding some details on her recent work but am not sure if that is kosher given that I'm referencing academic journals rather than lay articles for it. Also, if anyone knows Dutch I'm hopeful that her doctoral advisor/topic could be found online I'm just not searching in the right language. Thanks in advance! Mehmuffin (talk) 09:53, 16 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nevermind I have become more confident in notability upon reading more in the guidelines. Mehmuffin (talk) 19:30, 17 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

GRAND TOTAL 111 60 78 249

Rosiestep and Ipigott and other page watchers, Here are the final statistics on the Second Quarter Women in Africa contest | Jan-Feb-Mar 2021. I think is a very good total considering the dearth of acceptable sources for the assigned continent. Dsp13's nudge kept things going in March with new contestants when many folks who worked through January and February were pulled into different directions and challenges. Feel free to report out to the WiR talk page, if not I'll write something up in the next couple of days (# of active participants and # of articles created). We can add a plug for the European contest which is just starting. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 01:37, 1 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much, WomenArtistUpdates, for taking the lead on this -- and 249 articles about African women is awesome, any way you look at it. I think everyone, including me, looks forward to reading your write up about the contest. Good idea to plug the European contest, too! --Rosiestep (talk) 17:20, 1 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
