Discussion (moved from front side)[edit]

Suggestions? Comments?

  • Sounds like a great idea, but I see there are a lot of parks and gardens on the list. If you waited a month to mid-or late April, these places would be more green and in bloom and you would have a chance to get better images of these locations. --Crunch (talk) 11:25, 18 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Why is this on a work day? Many of us would love to participate, but we have jobs.--ThisIsMyWikipediaName (talk) 16:39, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • This is the date chosen by the Columbia Free Culture people, which they considered most convenient for the students. But you don't have to start at noon; there will also be opportunities to check-in in the early evening (more details on this after we finalize things at the meetings tonight). --Pharos (talk) 18:28, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I like the concept, but why three people with one camera? Doing it on a work day is cool -- it's a good excuse to take a day off :-) Unfortunately, this Friday looks pretty bleak in the weather forecast. I'm up for WP: Wikipedia Takes The Bronx if it ever gets organized. -- RoySmith (talk) 22:05, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • You're competing as a team, and it's easier to sort through the photos that way. Of course, that doesn't mean that only one person is taking the photographs. You can, of course, compete individually or in twos if you want. The weather doesn't look bad for mid-day Friday (when the bulk of the photographing will take place), only for the early morning and late night [1].--Pharos (talk) 22:12, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Great idea! I've got a question though: why CC-SA instead of PD?--82.92.181.129 (talk) 19:08, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • Well, I guess it depends on your philosophical perspective, on whether PD or copyleft is more "free". Fact is, someone could modify your PD picture slightly, copyright it as his own, publish it as his own, and never have to tell anyone about the PD version. So some people feel that the copyleft principle benefits the free content movement as a whole more than simply putting things in the public domain. Of course, arguments could be made the other way too; but Wikipedia itself is copyleft, and we felt we should use a copyleft license to best embody the "spirit of Wikipedia" to participants who are first-time contributors.--Pharos (talk) 03:37, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Podcast from here??[edit]

Is anyone up for doing a recording about what is happening here? something that explains what will be going on and turn it into a podcast? Perhaps interview some people participating? The Placebo Effect (talk) 02:17, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Do you mean before or after the event?--Pharos (talk) 02:20, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Which ever one allows you to explain whats happening, and possibly interview some particapents. I'm sure that creative control of an episode can be handled by someone. Just one thing, if it could be gotten to us as soon as possible after this is over so we can publish this episode while the news is still fresh. The Placebo Effect (talk) 02:26, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
We will have a radio reporter from WNYC there, actually. No word yet on whether she'll agree to open-source her story as an act of participant observation :) Otherwise, I guess if User:David Shankbone comes he could do some interviews too (as he's done on Wikinews). And we might have some video too, as User:Nightscream has videoed some of our previous events.--Pharos (talk) 03:37, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'm not sure about video. We haven't tried it before, but I'm sure we could arrange things differently. It would be nice to have an episode about this, since it is getting non-wikipedians involved we can get there point of view. The Placebo Effect (talk) 03:53, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Registered Historic Places[edit]

If you need more places to add to the list, don't forget about the redlinked articles on the Registered Historic Places lists (Wikipedia:Wikipedia Takes Manhattan/Goals#Suggestions for other sources of articles that need photos (and stubs for matter)). These places are notable by default (as far as I know), and so even if an article is redlinked, it will most likely have an article someday... Besides, we've been converting those lists into tables, and it'd be helpful to have pictures even if we don't have articles yet.
So sorry that I won't be able to be there to help, but I'll be with you in spirit! I'll be doing a similar adventure in and around Boston over the coming weeks :o) tiZom(2¢) 19:09, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for protecting the page[edit]

But this event is getting pretty big, and I didn't want any possibility of the page being messed up on the day before.

Please let's have any last-minute discussions on this talk page. Thanks.--Pharos (talk) 07:46, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Important Advice[edit]

If there's even a small chance you can come, you should still register, and before 8 PM EST. There's no downside to registering and not coming, but there is a distinct downside to coming and not registering on time (we'll have trouble letting you in).--Pharos (talk) 12:55, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Subway photography note[edit]

I just thought it was worth mentioning that photography in the subways is permitted. I wanted to clarrify this because I know that many are under the impression that it is restricted. Frankie816 (talk) 13:43, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The weather[edit]

It isn't half-bad, people. Hooray!--Pharos (talk) 14:28, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Asking for tips[edit]

Hello Pharos, I'd like to (help) organize a similar event for the Netherlands or Belgium. Do you have any tips? What worked out well for you and what would you do differently next time?--branko (talk) 16:48, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fantastic to hear this! Replied on your talk page.--Pharos (talk) 19:43, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
