Yunis Abdelhamid (born 28 September 1987) is a professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Ligue 1 club Saint-Étienne.[1] Born in France, he plays for the Morocco national team.[2] In 2020, he was named as one of the best Arab players in the world.[3]
Club career
[edit]Out of contract from Valenciennes, Abdelhamid joined Dijon on a three-year contract on 15 May 2016.[4]
Abdelhamid helped Reims win the 2017–18 Ligue 2 and promote to the Ligue 1 for the 2018–19 season.[5] He was also made the captain of the club.[citation needed]
Following the 2023–24 season, after seven years at Reims, Abdelhamid left the club as a free agent to sign for Saint-Étienne on a one-year contract with an optional additional year.[6][7]
International career
[edit]Abdulhamid was called up to the Morocco national team for a friendly against Albania on 1 September 2016, but did not feature.[8] He made his official debut in a 2–0 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualification win over São Tomé and Príncipe.[9]
On 28 December 2023, Abdulhamid was amongst the 27 players selected by coach Walid Regragui to represent Morocco in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.[10][11]
