Re: Charles Jonasen

You asked about what the book Mill City Scrum has to say about Charles Jonasen. Well, Jonasen played for the Minneapolis Marines, which is what the book is about. The book covers the Marines from 1905 through their final season as the Red Jackets in 1930, and the book includes Jonasen in its year-by-year rosters plus accounts of games.     Unfortunately, for someone who played regularly for 14 seasons, there is almost nothing about him except roster positions, a couple of big plays, and some biographical info like he was a fireman and a policeman. NorseLord (talk) 01:42, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

    Charles Jonasen played first base and right field for the Minneapolis Marines amateur baseball team.
    He served in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War I.
    He first worked as a shipping clerk for a flour mill, then as a deputy sheriff for the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Department, and later for the Minneapolis Fire Department (1928-1957). NorseLord (talk) 16:59, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
    @NorseLord: Hmm... that is rather slim. Take note that Wikipedia requires it's subjects to have so-called "significant coverage", which basically means that there needs to be sources that cover the topic in-depth (100 words on a topic has been a proposed standard, although it is not a hard rule).     Ha, I remember that! I was just about to mention it. I actually had one ITN entry that I scrambled to work on. I still remember it to this date; Lloyd Erskine Sandiford. I desperately worked on it for a bit but it couldn't have happened at a worse time, I was actually at a sports-related event. I presumed it to be ready; but it still needs some sources and work, thus it really wasn't ready to be posted at ITN back then.   • Oh, and by the way, I'm curious: on C. O. Brocato, why did ya decide to tag the newspapers.com references with {{open access}}, although they're freeview clippings?     • That's just how I've done it. I think tagging it with "open access" makes sense for the clippings, since anyone can view them, whereas plain page searches (e.g. [1]) are tagged with "url-access=subscription" since only subscribers can view them. BeanieFan11 (talk) 23:09, 17 January 2024 (UTC)

      Hey @BeanieFan11, I actually had been discussing this with Tails off wiki and encouraged them to reach out for clarification. I've been doing some digging and I found this discussion: Wikipedia talk:Newspapers.com/Archive 1#Use of "via" and "free access" symbol in Newspapers.com citations
      The example at Wikipedia:Newspapers.com was modified to remove free access from the reference in 2018 based on that discussion. I feel like I've been spending days trying to figure out what's the most correct way to handle this situation since I plan to continue to use Newspaper.com refs for the content I'm trying to promote.       • I don't know where I originally got the idea for "open access" for the clippings (probably from watching someone else do it ); not sure if there's a "most correct" way to handle the situation but I think it ultimately comes down to individual editor preference – I've seen different editors format it at least four different ways.     It comes with the inherent accusation that I am targeting your articles for deletion, which I am not. I am targeting articles which do not meet the criteria met by WP:NSEASONS, some of which were created by you, and many more which were not. Once again, I ask for you to strike that part of your post.     If you are not targeting my articles, then I truly wonder how you found to tag for notability Marshall Edwards, Pete Swanson, Frank Robinson and Joe Rowe – four completely unrelated football players who are listed as my creations mostly in that order from the same month – all in a span of four minutes? Or how did you find the 1916 Tusculum Pioneers football team – an article outside your NSEASONS-deletion focus of the 1800s-1900s but related to an article I wrote?     Using categories created for the respective teams, and the early college football seasons. I also nominated season articles from the 1920s [[2]] so I'm confused how the 1916 article is outside that focus of the first roughly 50 seasons of plainly non-notable "season" articles.     @Let'srun: And quite interesting that immediately after this, you mass maintenance tag for notability many of the season articles by me for three different programs, with no others not related to me; no, one does not randomly come across so many programs created by me when there's at least ten times as many similar articles from different programs in the same shape and state.     @Let'srun: I'm finding your response difficult to understand; but the only place these articles (Swanson, Edwards) are connected are at my userpage, where they are listed next to each other.     They don't. You just picked 4 articles that I have tagged which were created by you through searching multiple categories of NFL teams (and you have hundreds of articles). I don't have any issue with the vast majority of your articles, just because I maybe disagree with 1-2% of your creations (if that) does not mean I am single-handedly targeting them. Also interesting how immediately after my comment at 4:28 you voted "delete" at two AFDs I contributed inclusion-leaning comments to (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hussain Ali Nasayyif, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tirioro Willie) in rapid succession with no others for a good 10+ minutes, then immediately after your response here you find another of them in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Karl Schwegler.     @Let'srun: OK - so in four minutes, you randomly searched Category:Brooklyn Dodgers (NFL) players, completely randomly came across, out of over 200 others, Marshall Edwards which I happened to create, found it to tag for notability; one minute later, randomly searched Category:Los Angeles Rams players, containing over 1,000, and randomly choose to tag for notability Pete Swanson, the article I created right after Edwards; then one minute later randomly searched Category:St. Louis Rams players, a category of over 800, randomly found Joe Rowe, which I coincidentally created right after Swanson; and then one minute later, searched Category:Denver Broncos players, a category of ~1,600, and randomly found to tag for notability Frank Robinson, whom I also coincidentally happened to create right around the time of Rowe?     • @Jeraxmoira: Apologies for taking so long to get to this. I took a quick look myself and wasn't able to find that much besides what's already listed in the article; Newspapers.com just had one box score mention it seems. @Star Mississippi: Thanks, but as you can see in my last comment there I created Georgetown football, 1874–1889 so that draftification wouldn't be needed; its pretty much figured out that it (1881) only needs to be redirected to that page now (which looks like its heading towards keep, as the AFD for it was a bit silly). No worries. I'll be honest, I was a little confused by the end of the discussion (not your fault, just the volume) and the subsequent AfD. Didn't want to do the redirect and then have it lost as a G8 if the AfD didn't close as retained.

Hi @BeanieFan11. I'm going to decline this one. Given there was a clear consensus against that article continuing to exist (vs the others where the material is fine, it's just a question of where it should live and you creating the requisite merger targets, etc.) I feel restoring it would overrule community consensus. I have a feeling it will land at DRV, which I'm OK with. I feel like this information should probably live somewhere, it just probably isnt on Wiki. Let me know if you need more info. @Star Mississippi: Just to be clear, I'm not asking for it to be part of mainspace again; the list is useful for editors in making changes relating to NFL team staffs and coaches, etc. so I think it would be good in projectspace like you did before with Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of National Football League players with unidentified given names. If you don't think the community consensus supports such an action, I may bring it to DRV to check if you're alright with that (not exactly disagreeing with the closure, which I think was correct, just I think it would serve purpose in projectspace to assist editors like myself in contributing). I'm absolutely fine with that DRV, @BeanieFan11 and if you do so this evening please feel free to point to this discussion as my blessing to explore the target as I'm about to log off. I'll weigh in to support it when I log back on. I think in this case the DRV would be more productive to establish the new location than a restoration and move which I think would lead to MfD especially since the ANI requester's userpage version was speedied and the last thing we need is even more bureaucracy. It's similar to the so-called permission to allow recreation vs. a G4 that we sometimes see in DRV. I was hoping for an ATD but your position didn't seem to get much traction whereas I think in this request for Project space, it might once folks aren't looking at notability. FWIW if I'd participated as an editor, I probably would have !voted the same as you did. It's useful, but alas it isn't notable nor really could it ever be. Is that helpful? (talk page stalker) Eh, I didn't comment at that AfD because I couldn't come up with a guideline-based reason for keeping but I think it's a useful navigational aid. It's not everyday a reader complains about an article that was deleted. Not sure it's too different from the lists in Category:Lists of current team rosters. WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page.
