- The Antipodes islands, formerly the home of large herds of fur seals, are discovered by the crew of the British ship HMS Reliance.

- Bretby Castle, Derbyshire county, England: Bretby Castle fortified manor incorporates manorial remains dating from the 13th to the 17th centuries. The visible remains, which occupy a sub-rectangular enclosure, are those of the 16th century manor partially excavated in 1800.

- Infrared rays are discovered by William Herschel, an English astronomer of German origin.
- Volta discovers principle for an electric battery: that a continuous flow of electrical force is generated when using certain fluids as conductors to promote a chemical reaction.
- Beryllium is discovered by German chemist Johann Bartholomäus Trommsdorff (1770-1837) in beryl from Saxony, a new earth, calling it Agusterde ("Agust Earth").
- Yeast is discovered, as a new way to make beer ferment (beer made before 1800 was lambic).
