Context[edit]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Landmarks

The main article for this category is Landmarks. Originally, a landmark meant a geographic feature used by explorers and others to find their way.

In modern usage, it is anything that is easily recognisable, such as a monument, building, or other structure.

In American English this is extended to mean anything which might interest visitors – the British English equivalent is visitor attraction.

There is nothing in the definition of landmark that excludes tourist attractions, or vice verse. JarrahTree 12:03, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Not interested mitch, sort it out yourself JarrahTree 14:06, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I presume that this edit triggered the post above.
In American English this is extended to mean anything which might interest visitors – According to the Landmark article, it includes "... of interest to tourists due to notable physical features or historical significance" (my emphasis). I assert that "notable physical features or historical significance" are not defining characteristics of tourist attractions - the only defining characteristics of a tourist attraction is that it attracts tourists, or is intended to.
In an case, the category is "... in ... Australia", so I would expect, per (the principle of) MOS:TIES that we should use the Australian English definition of the word, independently of the American definition.

I would argue that tourist attractions can be landmarks but not all are. In Port Stephens, dolphin and whale watching cruises are tourist attractions but they're not landmarks. --AussieLegend () 14:53, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Agree. Some landmarks are tourist attractions (e.g. Sydney Opera House) and some are not (e.g. a factory chimney), and similarly some tourist attractions are landmarks (e.g. Sydney Opera House) and some are not (e.g. whale-watching cruise). Kerry (talk) 00:24, 5 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I recall we had a similar discussion on this issue (probably over at Categories for the Discussion) a year or so ago, when there was some attempt to merge them (or something like that). As I recall, there was no change as people mentioned the various counter-examples. Kerry (talk) 00:27, 5 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
