Angry Birds Journey, previously titled Angry Birds Casual during soft launch, is a 2022 casual puzzle mobile game developed and published by Rovio Entertainment and the twenty-fourth game in the Angry Birds series. The game is based on the older entries in the series such as the original Angry Birds (2009) and Angry Birds Seasons (2010), while also resembling the newer titles such as Angry Birds Match (2017) and Angry Birds Dream Blast (2019). The game follows the flock of birds as they embark on a journey to retrieve of the Egg Wonders before the pigs do.
Gameplay[edit]
Angry Birds Journey has a level-based progression system with multiple areas per level, similar to Angry Birds 2 (2015). The player has a limited amount of randomly-selected birds, each with unique abilities, which are launched via a slingshot at structures containing pigs ala the older games in the series. Structures now contain hatchlings trapped in cages, ice balloons, bouncy blocks, pairs of fireflies which must be reunited, and Mystery Boxes. Each area has a certain objective required to complete the area which includes popping every pig, freeing every hatchling, and/or reuniting every firefly. Every time a block is destroyed, a meter at the top left is filled. When the meter is full, the player can choose to increase the power of their next bird's ability.
In levels, players can also use power-ups known as Boosters to help them destroy or weaken structures without spending any birds.[2]
Release[edit]
In March of 2020, Journey was first soft launched under the title Angry Birds Casual on the App Store in Finland, Poland and Sweden, although it was temporarily delisted in December that year due to it being rebranded to Angry Birds Journey.[3] The reason given for the title Casual was that is was an "internal code-name" for its style of gameplay and was changed when the game had "enough shape".[citation needed] One month later on January 14, 2021, the game was fully released for the first time in the same set of countries as well as Denmark and Canada, and in the United Kingdom in August of that year. Angry Birds Journey was made available worldwide on January 20, 2022. After its launch, the game would continue to receive post-launch updates that would introduce new levels and game modes among other additions.[4]
Reception[edit]
Angry Birds Journey has received generally mixed praise since its release. It has been praised for its simplicity and addictiveness, but has also been criticised for its heavy, predatorial uses of microtransactions.[5][6][7]
