Most systems had only basic features, when the 6th and 7th gens in gaming came around, most systems gotten applications which did lets systems do other stuff,like streaming for example

Most Video Game systems used to have basic features, in the early days of Gaming consoles most systems had disks with only an internet browser

The first console with applications was the Apple Pippin released in 1997 it had features similar to the Apple Macintosh but played games and as consoles entered the 5th Gen some systems had disks for Internet Browsers like the Sega Dreamcast when consoles reached the Sixth generation of video game consoles systems had DVD support and some handheld systems of the 3rd, 4th and 5th gen had TV turners, like the Nintendo DS in Japan,

The first application was Netflix which released though a disk early on only in Brazil for PS2 and lasted until 2012, in 2005 and 2006 when some systems released they had internet browsers and DVD support, by 2007 Netflix was the first to support gaming consoles and were though disks on Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, some apps were for streaming, buying games, renting movies, and browsing the web,

When streaming on consoles got popular, most consoles gotten remotes released for streaming or DVD

other apps released were, Hulu, Amazon Video,BBC iplayer (UK only), these were early apps

Some examples for apps were Nintendo Channel on Wii, and Photo Channel

When Consoles reached the Seventh generation of video game consoles most had streaming as a selling point, some consoles had pre-installed apps, and Blu-ray support, the Wii U and 3DS had for exmaple Miiverse, while the PS Vita and Xbox 360 had apps for Facebook, Twitter, other systems had forms of Social Media, some other apps were Video calling, which was though Skype on PSP, Xbox 360, and Wii U Chat on Wii U
