Geiru Toneido
Ace Attorney character
First appearancePhoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice (2016)

Geiru Toneido, 旋風亭 風子 (Pūko Senpūtei) in the Japanese original version, is a character in the 2016 video game Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice. She appears in the game's fourth episode, "Turnabout Storyteller", as a witness, and as the episode true culprit and antagonist.

Geiru has gained popularity outside of her Ace Attorney role as the "clussy girl" meme, who originated the concept of "clussy", referring to a sexually appealing female clown.[1][2][3]

Characteristics[edit]

Geiru is a balloon artist and rakugo disciple with a cheerful clown persona. Despite this, Geiru is unskilled at both types of performance, and is inwardly deeply bitter and insecure. As a result, she uses her flamboyant, attractive, over the top clown persona as a means of covering for true nature as an unskilled, and emotionally unstable young woman.

Geiru presents herself during Turnabout Storyteller as an "innocent and cheerful" balloon artist, filling the role during the episode as an archetypal femme fatale villain. After Athena Cykes reveals her true nature to the court, Geiru adopts an openly hostile clown persona in which she wields a sword made from balloons.[2]

After it is revealed that she murdered her rakugo master, Taifu Toneido, Geiru's clown persona is entirely stripped away, and her true nature as a bitter and insecure young woman is revealed. She breaks down, and confesses to having killed Taifu out of resentment for what she percieved to be his unfair treatment of her as a rakugo disciple.

"Clussy"[edit]

Internet popularity[edit]

Geiru has gained popularity in internet culture via "clussy", an example of "-ussy", that combines "pussy" and "clown", and refers to physical and sexual appeal towards "hot clowns". Geiru, at the center of this meme, has become recognized outside of Ace Attorney fan circles in broader internet culture as "the clown lady" or the "clussy girl".[4][1][5] [6][3]

Geiru's "clussy appeal" has been cited as a combination of her "conventionally attractive" or "sexy" design, in combination with her "rambunctious" clown persona. Her popularity has has been likened to that shown towards e-girls.[3]

Popularized characteristics[edit]

Within Spirit of Justice, Geiru's "signature animation" involves one in which she jiggles her breasts, as a means of winning the attention of the judge. Alongside this, her appearances are accompanied by numerous "balloon" based innuendos, in which her well-endowed chest, and the attention they bring, is likened to balloons. This running gag climaxes in her breakdown at the end of the episode, after Athena Cykes has proven her guilt in the murder of Taifu Toneido, during which her chest bursts like a pair of balloons.

Due to the popularity of the "clussy" meme an unusually large amount of fan art of Geiru, a large percentage being from non-Ace Attorney players, has been produced, with a heavy focus on a theme of large breasts, and balloon innuendos.[1][3][6]
