Kalina & Kiana is an American pop music duo that consists of sisters Kalina and Kiana Campion.[1]

Early life and career beginnings[edit]

The Raymies[edit]

In 2007, at 11 and 13 years of age, they started their career as lead singers and "frontmen" for the all-girl band, Crush.[2][3] For legal reasons, they had to change their name and were temporarily known as Untitled Girl Band,[4] before landing on The Raymies[5][6] in 2008. In the three years that followed, the band gained studio and stage experience all over the country with more than 100 live performances.[7][8]

Disney[edit]

With the help of Brillstein Entertainment, John Stamos co-wrote and produced a television pilot[9] for Disney that was intended to be a launching platform for The Raymies. The show was slated to replace Hannah Montana after its final season. Three major record labels were after The Raymies, but Disney only offered the television deal to Kalina and Kiana.[10]

The offer was declined in an effort to "do the right thing" and keep the band together.[11] A few months later, The Raymies imploded at the hands of the other band members' parents.

Rainbow[edit]

Italian Deal[edit]

A year after the breakup, the sisters were approached by Rainbow S.p.A., the Italian animation company responsible for Winx Club. Rainbow was looking to follow Disney's footsteps and start a "live action" division. They wanted Kalina and Kiana to star in the show as two sisters, separated at birth who attend the same fashion school in Milan and form a band.[12]

My American Friend[edit]

Kalina and Kiana, along with their father, Michael Campion, worked with Rainbow via Skype, emails and phone calls for more than a year to develop the show, My American Friend. During that time, the Campions wrote more than a dozen songs for the show and finally traveled to Italy to film the pilot episode.[13][14][15] When production was complete, Rainbow targeted MIPCOM, the annual industry event, to shop the show.

Rocky's Revival[edit]

Pseudonym[edit]

While waiting nearly a year for MIPCOM, the girls continued to perform live events and concerts, but their contact with Rainbow stipulated that they could not perform or promote themselves as "Kalina and Kiana Campion". Rainbow had plans to launch them globally with the release of the show, so Kalina and Kiana performed in the U.S. under the pseudonym of Rocky's Revival.[16][17][18][19][20]

Places We Would Go[edit]

Rocky's Revival's debut EP, Places We Would Go[21] was released in July 2012. Months rolled by and Rainbow informed them of additional delays. Rainbow was selling a portion of their company to Viacom[22] and the project was frozen during the acquisition.

Cancer[edit]

Months turned into years and Kalina and Kiana had given up on the show. Rocky's Revival continued to release music and play live gigs, when they received startling news. Kalina was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma. Chemotherapy treatments knocked her down, but on the days that she felt good, the girls continued to perform.[23]

During this period, Kalina applied for a scholarship with Cancer for College[24][25] and included a CD with her application.[26] Cancer for College invited Rocky's Revival to play at the Desert Smash Event[27] in which the girls opened for Lifehouse, Natasha Bedingfield and Justin Bieber. This forged a relationship with Cancer for College that has lasted long after Kalina's remission.

Rainbow Returns[edit]

Maggie & Bianca[edit]

Nearly five years after their first meeting with Rainbow, the show was ready to begin production. Now in college, Kalina and Kiana passed on the lead roles and opted to write songs for the series and make guest appearances. The show was re-titled Maggie & Bianca: Fashion Friends. The first three seasons aired on Netflix and other streaming services internationally.

Kalina and Kiana were also asked to sing in Rainbow's feature-length animated film, Winx Club: The Mystery of the Abyss.[28]

Free From Contractual Obligations[edit]

Finally free of contractual obligations, the girls have reclaimed their brand, Kalina & Kiana. Currently, they are releasing new music,[29] performing, writing and working on several projects with Music Epicenter,[30][31] including documenting their journey as independent artists.

Writing for other projects[edit]

JumpStart[edit]

While waiting for their Disney deal to materialize, The Raymies music was licensed to JumpStart, to showcase in their virtual world for kids.[32] This predecessor to the Metaverse allowed young kids to roam a safe environment on the internet, without parental supervision. JumpStart animated The Raymies and made their interactive, virtual concert a destination on their site.[33] Within months of launching The Raymies interactive concert, JumpStart's subscribers grew from 200,000 to more than 2,000,000 as The Raymies concert became #1 destination on the site.

Film and Television[edit]

The Raymies first single Dance All Night[34] was also used in the film Legally Blondes.

A chance meeting with Jeremy Zag, of ZAG Entertainment led to collaboration on numerous songs for his ZAG HEROEZ characters, including Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir.[35][36][37]

Kalina & Kiana continue to write for film and television projects including 3 Seasons of Maggie & Bianca for Netflix and more recently Big Shot for Disney+.[38]
