Madame X is an upcoming American television series created by Angela Robinson, based on the DC Comics character Madame Xanadu. It is intended to be set in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), and is produced by Bad Robot Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. Madame X is one of several planned spin-offs from Bad Robot's Justice League Dark series.

Bad Robot was exclusively developing film and television projects based on Justice League Dark characters by January 2020. Work on a Madame X spin-off started by June 2021 at HBO Max with Robinson on board as writer and executive producer. The streaming service passed on the series in September 2022.

Development[edit]

In May 2013, Guillermo del Toro revealed that the roster for his in-development Justice League Dark film, based on various supernatural characters from DC Comics, included the character Madame Xanadu.[1] The project ultimately did not move forward.[2] Production company Bad Robot signed a five-year overall deal with WarnerMedia in September 2019 to create feature films, television series, and other content.[3] Bad Robot was exclusively developing new film and television projects based on the Justice League Dark characters by January 2020. It was unknown whether Bad Robot co-CEO and filmmaker J. J. Abrams would be directing any of the projects at that point.[2] Abrams and Bad Robot were developing Madame X, a series based on Madame Xanadu, by June 2021. Angela Robinson was set to write and executive produce the series for the streaming service HBO Max, having been brought to the project by Abrams after meeting his wife and Bad Robot co-CEO Katie McGrath through the organization Time's Up.[4] The series was expected to be set in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) and be part of the Justice League Dark "franchise" that Abrams and Bad Robot were developing for HBO Max, with connections to a Justice League Dark series as well as other spin-offs based on individual members of that team.[4][5]

In August 2022, after WarnerMedia merged with Discovery, Inc. to form Warner Bros. Discovery and the future of planned DC projects became uncertain, the series was still in active development.[6] However, HBO Max passed on the series and the other Justice League Dark projects a month later. Warner Bros. Television and Bad Robot were still positive about the projects and were planning to shop them to other networks later that month.[7]

Writing[edit]

The script for the first episode had been delivered to Warner Bros. by June 2022.[8]
