Draft:Mario Day

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  • Comment: While somewhat borderline, it still does not appear to be standalone notable from the Mario series in my view. The vast majority of Mario Day mentions are ads and Nintendo updates. A Cultural impact of the Mario franchise article may work better discussing this subject as part of it. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 09:38, 12 March 2024 (UTC)

Mario Day[1] (often formatted as MAR10 Day,[2] also known as National Mario Day[3]) is an annual celebration themed around the Mario franchise. The event takes place on March 10, since the first three letters of March and the number 10 side-by-side resembles the word "Mario".[3] It was first officially established by Nintendo in 2015 when they posted a video on their official YouTube channel.[4] Since then, Nintendo has launched multiple events surrounding the Mario franchise each year on March 10, including discounts on currently-available games or special announcements.[5][6]

Origin[edit]

Mario Day and its name was originally coined by fans in 2014[7] in which fans would celebrate the day on social media using the hashtag "#Mar10".[8] Nintendo would respond to this the year after when they began to embrace the event by celebrating it themselves.[4]

History[edit]

The first official mentions of Mario Day were in a tweet from the Twitter accounts of both Nintendo of America and Nintendo UK.[9][10] as well as in a YouTube video titled "Celebrate Mar. 10 - Mario Day!" uploaded onto the official Nintendo of America YouTube channel on March 10, 2016.[4]

In 2017, anyone who used Facebook on Mario Day that year was able to add a Mario-themed frame to their profile icon from March 10 until March 12. Nintendo also partnered with the Starlight Children's Foundation to provide new gowns for children to wear, resulting in over 2,000 donations.[11] Additionally, an ABC newscast would be centred around Mario and the franchise of the same name to celebrate the event, with the headline being "Happy National Mario Day".[12]

In 2018, Nintendo partnered with Google to include Mario as an Easter egg on Google Maps. A ? Block would be located next to the "Start" button after start and destination fields were filled, then Mario would appear, replacing the cursor, driving his Standard Kart from the Mario Kart series.[13]

In 2020, a tour themed around Mario and Luigi known as the "Mario Bros. Tour" was held in the Mario Kart Tour mobile game, and ran until March 10. In addition, Lego and Nintendo each uploaded a short teaser on their social media accounts announcing what would become Lego Super Mario.[14]

On Mario Day 2021, Super Nintendo World was announced to be opening in Universal Studios Japan in 2023,[15] along with the reveal of the then-next wave of Lego Super Mario sets, featuring the Lego Princess Peach character.[16]

In 2023, the final trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie was unveiled in a special Nintendo Direct presentation. The video premiered on March 9 in Western regions, whereas the date was March 10 in Eastern regions.[17] Additionally, a presentation hosted on the official Lego YouTube channel was premiered, showcasing several new sets and announcements relating to Lego Super Mario, including the seventh wave's Donkey Kong-themed sets.[18]

On March 9, 2024, Lego uploaded a short presentation to their YouTube channel, in which they announced three new Lego Super Mario sets alongside a teaser for sets based on the Mario Kart series, with the latter set to release in 2025. The day afterwards, a 2-minute presentation simply titled "Mario Day 2024" was uploaded to YouTube by Nintendo, in which Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and CEO of Illumination, Chris Meledandri, announced a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which is set to release theatrically on April 3, 2026 in the United States.[19] Along with this announcement was the reveal of the release dates for Luigi's Mansion 2 HD and the remake for Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, as well as several Mario titles from the Game Boy and Game Boy Color being added to the Nintendo Switch Online service.[20]
