Submachine is a series of point-and-click web games created by Mateusz Skutnik and released on Kongregate.[1], and later released on Steam [2]. The game is about exploring a structure known as the subnet, which is a collection of buildings with various architectural styles and time periods, ranging from ancient to modern. There are 10 games in the main series and 5 spin-off games.

Gameplay[edit]

The Submachine games are point-and-click, so gameplay consists of clicking on items on the screen to collect them, and using them in various places. The player can also collect secrets that can be used to unlock secret rooms where the Skutnik gives information about his personal life and details on the development process.

Reception[edit]

Rock Paper Shotgun described the games as "one of PC's best and spookiest puzzle games" [3]. It also has a 99% positive review on Steam according to Destructoid [4]. The games have also won several awards on JayIsGames, including "Best of 2009, Adventure"[5], "Best of 2010, Point-and-Click Adventure"[6], and Casual Gameplay Design Competition 8 : Sandbox[7]. Interactive Fiction developer Andrew Plotkin wrote a review about one of the games, Submachine Universe (formerly Submachine Network Exploration Experience), praising it for its inclusion of player-written theories about the plot and storyline, describing it as "a lovely way to include the player community in what is, mechanically, a series of solo adventures"[8]
