I've changed the link for help to Help:Contents; I think that that page - which is linked from the sidebar as well - accomplishes all of the goals here. Recently there have been many enquiries at WP:HD and WP:VPT about users who get the Loginsuccess screen but then can't stay logged in (usually due to a satellite Internet connection). Therefore, I would like to add the following text to this page:

(If you find yourself repeatedly logged out immediately after visiting this screen, first try checking the 'Remember me' box. If that doesn't work, please try using this alternative (but slower) connection.)

Per Brion Vibber's post at Mediazilla:7477#c2, please add some kind of proviso that that functionality is experimental. And per the bug report, you might also want to add something suggesting that the user ignore any browser warnings about bad certificates, or follow the instructions on [1] to download it, or something. —Simetrical (talk • contribs) 01:48, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

Wiktionary have been using this feature for a while (it's at the top of their Main Page), and it's also a VPT FAQ. Given Brion's comments, though, I'm not sure what we should do about this note; the choice seems to be to either make it longer or to remove it altogether. The {{editprotected}} above is Simetrical's, but I'd like to take advantage of it to suggest Wiktionary's wording "after accepting the CACERT certificate", and also suggest <small> tags (this isn't really the most important thing on the page). --ais523 09:55, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

Well, I only added it after the request. :-) (And it's in <small> already...) With those questions about the link, I think it better that we leave it off. There's been no need for such a link in the past, and we only get a small number of people with this problem, judging from my past experience. There can be other places linking to this option if necessary, but I don't think it's appropriate for this page anymore. This page should serve as a confirmation that you've logged in; nothing more, nothing less. (On that note, how about eliminating the help link? I don't see a need for the log in page to be a tutorial page. We have help pages for that.) Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 13:59, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

Given the controversy, I agree that it's probably best without the link. As for the small tags, for some reason they don't reduce the font size on my browser unless two of them are nested, and I'd forgotten about that. --ais523 15:05, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

Please reconsider this - It is very confusing and turning it into a link would be helpful. How is any normal user suppose to know that they're to paste that domain name into the current domain path to the userlogin page? Most are going to copy the url provided "secure.wikimedia.org" and paste it into the address bar and come up with "Wiki does not exist". Please link it to something as this is just plain confusing for the normal user. I'm a computer geek and I didn't catch it - I just moved on disappointed. If we're going to put it there, we should to make it easy to access. To the point of leaving the secure connection, I would actually prefer it. I only need it encrypted when sending my password throught the Starbucks wireless network or something of the sort. Encrypt my authentication and send me back to en.wikipedia.org - that would be fine with me. Morphh ^(talk) 15:02, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

User customised login screen

If you add to this message the code

{{User:$1/Login}}

Then users will be able to edit the Login subpage on their account and hence display any information they like when they log in. You can of course make this even smoother with:

{{#ifexist:User:$1/Login|{{User:$1/Login}}|}}

This would be incredibly useful for something like displaying WikiProject to-do lists when you log in, etc.
