1875 - Tokyo Kishōdai, the precursor to the Japan Meteorological Agency, is established.
1888 - The Tokyo Observatory (precursor to the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan) is established.
1897 - Japan's first ironworks, Yawata Iron & Steel, begins operation. Yawata Iron & Steel was merged with Fuji Iron & Steel in 1970 to form the Nippon Steel Corporation.
1903 - Hibiya Park, Japan's first western style park, opens in Tokyo.
1949 - Japan National Railways and the Japan Tobacco and Salt Public Corporation are both established.
1951 - The minting of one-yen aluminum coins begins.
1961 - The Japan Meteorological Agency begins publishing the "discomfort index", based on temperature and humidity. It is said that a discomfort index above 70 makes some people uncomfortable, but a discomfort index above 80 makes everyone uncomfortable.
1972 - The Road Traffic Law is passed, and the famous yellow and green "young leaf" mark, required to be displayed in the window of cars drive by inexperienced drivers, is born.
1980 - A forecast for the chance of precipitation is published in Tokyo for the first time.

1909 - The Ryōgoku Kokugikan sumō stadium opens in Tokyo. Constructed at a cost of 270,000 yen, the stadium holds 13,000 spectators.
1968 - An American F4 Phantom II crashes on the campus of Kyūshū University.
1973 - Wajima Hiroshi becomes the first sumō wrestler to enter the sport through a university club (rather than the more traditional training stable) and make the rank of Yokozuna.
1995 - Hideo Nomo becomes the first Japanese pitcher in 30 years to win a Major League Baseball game.

1858 - Ii Naosuke is appointed Tairō, or great elder.
1879 - The "Tōkyō Shōkonsha" changes its name to Yasukuni Shrine.
1928 - Manchurian warloard Zhāng Zuòlín is assassinated by members of the Kwantung Army, a unit of the Imperial Japanese Army.
1954 - Over 5,700 employees of Omikenshi Co., Ltd., an Osaka textile manufacturer, lead a strike demanding respect for civil rights, such as the right to marry freely, the right of privacy of correspondence and an end to forced conversion to Buddhism. The strike lasts over one hundred days and ends in a victory for the workers.

1886 - 日本初のストライキが、甲府の雨宮製糸工場で行われる。製糸工場の女子従業員たちが、賃金の引き下げや、遅刻早退の大幅賃金差し引きなどに反発して、ストライキを行う。ちなみに労働時間は、朝4時半出場、午後７時半退場だった。

1988 - 川崎市助役のリクルート株受領が発覚、リクルート事件へと発展する。朝日新聞のスクープによって、川崎市の助役がリクルート関連株の譲渡で１億円の利益を得ていたことが発覚。これが、リクルート事件の発端となる。

1991 - Tōhoku Shinkansen is opened between Ueno and Tokyo. With a city center section of 3.6 km, it led from Morioka to contact Tokyo Station to Hakata.
