technology definition[edit]

The definition describes technology as the application of developments.... to benefit humanity. I think the word "benefit" contains a bias. Humans make changes to the natural world to satisfy their needs or wants. Whether these changes will benefit humanity will depend on societal and individual values. Edtechie (talk) 02:15, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I just came to this talk page to make a similar comment, glad to see I'm not the first. I have to point out that at the moment it looks a bit silly on the Portal:Technology page right above the selected article on nuclear weapons ("a tool employed to injure, defeat, or destroy an adversary." I'm told.) While I like the idealistic nature of the definition I have to say it is completely unrealistic. Other examples are common, the environmental degradation is one that comes to mind. ...is an application of developments in science and engineering to benefit a human, a group, or humanity as a whole." might be a better way to put it. Are there any objections?--Keithonearth (talk) 05:25, 28 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sunnybond007 (talk) 06:36, 15 November 2011 (UTC) Please change "the definition of Technology is the making, usage and knowledge of tools, techniques, crafts, systems or methods of organization to benefit a group of humans, or humanity as a whole" to "the definition of Technology is the knowledge, making and usage of tools, techniques, crafts, systems or methods of organization to benefit a group of humans, or humanity as a whole" because as per the order of significance knowledge of tools comes first, then we make tools & lastly the usage of tools.[reply]

Please remove the phrase "Technologies significantly affect human as well as other animal species' ability to control and adapt to their natural environments" from the first paragraph. It is duplicate with the first phrase of the second paragraph. 177.159.238.221 (talk) 21:23, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well spotted! I've chosen to remove the second occurrence, so that the text matches the beginning of the Technology article. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:40, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The term can either be applied generally or to specific areas: examples include construction technology, medical technology, and information technology. This should be corrected: The term can either be applied generally or to specific areas. The examples include construction technology, medical technology, and information technology. There are many types of technology types. Nekka910 (talk) 16:15, 15 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Question: Why? It seems to read fine as it is now, and I don't really see an improvement with the proposed change. In particular I imagine many people would find the sentence 'There are many types of technology types.' quite odd and perhaps confusing. Your second sentence says 'The examples include', where the use of 'The' is potentially confusing too. Begoontalk 05:07, 16 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Partly done: Actually, on reflection, after looking at it again, there was one punctuation error, and I altered the wording slightly to "The term can either be applied generally or to many specific areas, examples of which include construction technology, medical technology and information technology." The technology industry provides the basis for chip production, information and communication systems, and computer systems. These companies serve as the developers and manufacturers of the products which drive the increasing efficiency and production of cell phones, computers, televisions, as well as other communication and information systems. It is a large industry with a vast growth potential, but it is also subject to sometimes volatile cycles, such as in the semiconductor industry. As chips continue to get smaller and globalization increases, demand for faster, more efficient technology will help drive the tech industry. 68.62.145.93 (talk) 22:55, 23 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

82.43.21.215 (talk) 15:12, 2 March 2016 (UTC) Technology has grown significantly over the years and even though it is used to make life easier it can also affect our employment because businesses will use technology in the place of staff. Technology as a replacement of staff may be a cheaper method for businesses because then then they won't have to pay staff wages.[reply]

Technology portal main page lists science subportals[edit]

At the top of the technology portal main page is a bar that lists it as "science" and shows science sub-portals, whereas all other portal pages show the subportals relevant to their page. Technology is the application of conceptual knowledge for achieving practical goals, especially in a reproducible way. The word technology can also mean the products resulting from such efforts, including both tangible tools such as utensils or machines, and intangible ones such as software. Technology plays a critical role in science, engineering, and everyday life.

Technological advancements have led to significant changes in society. The earliest known technology is the stone tool, used during prehistoric times, followed by the control of fire, which contributed to the growth of the human brain and the development of language during the Ice Age. The invention of the wheel in the Bronze Age allowed greater travel and the creation of more complex machines. More recent technological inventions, including the printing press, telephone, and the Internet, have lowered barriers to communication and ushered in the knowledge economy.

While technology contributes to economic development and improves human prosperity, it can also have negative impacts like pollution and resource depletion, and can cause social harms like technological unemployment resulting from automation. As a result, there are ongoing philosophical and political debates about the role and use of technology, the ethics of technology, and ways to mitigate its downsides. (Full article...)
