The structure was built c. 1908 to house the Welch Military Academy. The building took its present form in 1929 under the direction of architect Fred Wallace of Marchall and Brown. Wallace attended the University of Missouri for two years and joined Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

It was restored between 1965 and 1966 after a fire. The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.[1]

It is a 2+12-story Neo-Classical Revival style brick building with a "T"-plan. Its front facade features a central pedimented portico with six two-story stone Ionic order columns.[2]
