It is generated in 1939 in the Kiev Special military district. In September, 1939 participated in an emancipating campaign of Red Army to the Western Ukraine. From the beginning of war in structure of 13-th and 17-th shooting, 16-th mechanized cases, 10-th, 11-th and 12-th укрепрайонов, of some artillery, engineering and other parts is included in Southwest front and participated in Frontier battle to the west of Stanislav. In 2-nd half of July in structure of Southern front conducted defensive fights on уманском a direction. After an output(exit) from an environment management of army on August, 10th is disbanded, and its(her) armies are transferred(transmitted) to completion of connections and parts of front. Again 12-th army is created in August, 1941 on Southern front on the basis of 17-th shooting case. Originally its(her) structure included 270-th and 274-th shooting divisions, 11-th tank division and a number(line) of separate parts. Defended the left coast of Dnepr in area of Zaporozhye, in the end of September - the beginning of December, 1941 participated in Donbass defensive, Rostov defensive and offensive, in January, 1942 in Барвенковско - Лозовской offensive operations, in the subsequent conducted defensive fights in Donbass and on Northern Caucasus. To the middle of April, 1942 into army entered: 261-st сд colonel A.M.Ilina, 4-th сд colonel I.P.Roslogo, 74-th сд general F.E.Sheverdina, 176-th сд general V.N.Martsinkevicha and 54-th тбр colonel K.S.Minarova. In September, 1942 management of army is reorganized in management Туапсинского of defensive area and an army are transferred(transmitted) in 18-th army. Commanders: Galanin And. (август-October 1941), the general-major Koroteyev To. (October 1941 - April 1942), the general-major Grechko A. (April - till September, 3rd 1942), the general-major Sokolsky And. (till September, 13th 1942), the colonel Kirichenko. (till September, 20th 1942), the ген.-lieutenant

Again 12-th army is generated in April, 1943 on Southwest front on the basis of 5-th tank army. Its(her) structure included 172-nd, 203-rd, 244-th, 333-rd both 350-th shooting divisions and other connections and parts. In April - July was in a reserve of front, and then participated in the Donbass and Zaporozhye offensive operations. In November management of army is disbanded, armies are transferred(transmitted) in other armies. The commander: Shlemin I. (April - May 1943), the general-lieutenant Danilov And. (May - October 1943), the ген.-major, from the end of October 1943 ген.-lieutenant
