Vandalism

There are some articles on Wikipedia (notably this one, and the College Football Playoff National Championship) which are being edited by trolls, adding asterisks and the like in reference to the Michigan Wolverines football sign-stealing scandal. I addressed this on the CFP page, and I'll address it here:

The scandal is not only irrelevant to the CFP (which isn't sanctioned by NCAA), but it's irrelevant to the Wikipedia articles as well. The Houston Astros 2022 World Series win doesn't include any asterisks on the List of World Series champions page. Nor is there an asterisk next to Barry Bonds' name on the List of Major League Baseball career home run leaders. Because that is not how Wikipedia operates. These are factual pages used to note the specific event and/or milestone. And if a user does vandalize those pages, then remove them as well.

If the CFP committee decides to (for example) vacate Michigan's National Championship win, then it may be noted as the reason that the title was vacated. Not simply an asterisk to describe the alleged cheating, and especially not an asterisk with no context. Ala the List of Tour de France general classification winners page. Because Lance Armstrong's wins were explicitly vacated by the UCI. That's the difference.

Don't turn this in to an edit war. If you feel so strongly that these should be added, we can discuss it with a Wikipedia admin. But it's unlikely to be considered relevant for the reasons noted above. Also, the NCAA has only ever vacated games and titles for usage of ineligible players. And the NCAA president believes that Michigan did win their title fairly.

I’m guessing this is the work of angry Ohio State, Michigan State and Notre Dame fans who are upset over the fact that they can’t use certain memes against Michigan anymore.

Either way, we should notify the mods to start banning users who do this or lock the article from editing. Alex9234 (talk) 15:39, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

I appreciate the passion, but let's not explicitly accuse any group. A lot of college football fans are pushing the asterisk narrative, and trolls gonna troll.

It would ultimately come down to the CFP committee to decide to vacate Michigan's title for it to matter. As they (not the NCAA) are the governing body of CFP. It's most assuredly not going to happen.

But we have a clear precedent with examples noted above. Wikipedia doesn't operate this way. And as you said, we will appeal to Wiki admins if this behavior persists. StrangeApparition2011 (talk) 16:44, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
