Untitled[edit]

Why is it "Melbourne and Victoria". That's weird. Melbourne is in Victoria. You wouldn't say that something is in "London and England" or "Miami and Florida". Is the official title of the hosts this or is someone just writing it weird? Sirhissofloxley (talk) 08:05, 12 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I keep seeing it being called "Victoria 2026", not Melbourne & Victoria. Melbourne is only hosting the opening ceremonies. This doesn't make sense to me. Should we change this? Rushtheeditor (talk) 16:34, 12 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Glad the official website has changed it to Victoria just after it won the games. The other name really didn't make sense Sirhissofloxley (talk) 22:05, 14 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Template needs updating[edit]

The Commonwealth Games Infobox template has a field for Host city. The 2026 Games are not being hosted in a single city, but are (mostly) spread across multiple towns and cities in regional areas of the Australian state of Victoria. I don't know how to update the template. Anyone? HiLo48 (talk) 08:29, 30 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Cities, country[edit]

All preceding Year Commonwealth Games pages, use the "city, country" form, in the intro & infobox. We shouldn't be making this one page, different. GoodDay (talk) 01:08, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

As I said in my edit summary, the precedent cannot be strictly applied as this Commonwealth Games is being hosted by a state across a number of regional cities and regions (noting that Gippsland is a region and not a city). These games are different as there is not a host city. To put otherwise for the sake of consistency is misleading, and if anything needs to be changed it is the wording of the "host city" in the template. I support the recent edit to have it just be "Victoria", although again this is not a city. But the four primary regional sites should be mentioned in the infobox as they are essential information. And the state should definitely be included in the intro, it is important information, readers not familiar with the state or the nature of Australian jurisdictions will want a link both to the state and to the general article about states and territories. The parameter in the infobox, should be changed from "Host city" to "Host state", for this particular page. GoodDay (talk) 05:23, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, as can be seen in the section immediately above. How can that be achieved? HiLo48 (talk) 07:01, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There used to be a mechanism for showing a "reign" as a "tenure", for royal consorts. I suspect the same could be done for showing "host city" as "host state". GoodDay (talk) 14:27, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have used {{replace}} to render Host city as Host within the article's infobox. This covers all bases and is more succinct. Adding the word state is not required. -- Ham105 (talk) 14:21, 16 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That's cool. GoodDay (talk) 22:45, 16 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for this. The question remains whether the four sites should also be listed as locations, and how that could be done in the infobox given the constraints of the template. Gracchus250 (talk) 01:52, 17 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, shall we continue to use the "city, country" format for the preceding Commonwealth Games, in the intro & infobox? PS - I've mentioned this at WP:SPORTS. -- GoodDay (talk) 02:21, 17 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

In terms of listing sites (IF necessary) ... Gippsland is a big region (larger in area than Switzerland) but it seems most (if not all?) of the Sports in the Gippsland Hub are planned for Latrobe City. Latrobe Valley Express – So could perhaps use something like this:

Whatever you all decide. In the intros of the Games with Canada as the host, I've replaced Canada, with the host province. GoodDay (talk) 04:55, 17 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
