Requested move 13 May 2020[edit]

The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

Moved as originally proposed. We are at a standoff in this discussion because two inherently contradictory proposals have been made, and both have about the same proportion of support. Clearly, we can't move ABS-CBN (TV network) to ABS-CBN, as there is a clear consensus in one discussion to make ABS-CBN a disambiguation page; but we can't move ABS-CBN (disambiguation) to ABS-CBN, as there is a clear consensus in the other discussion that the network is the primary topic of ABS-CBN. However, since the status quo ante is that the network is the primary topic of the term, evidenced by the redirect already pointing there, I am closing with the consensus effecting the least amount of change to the status quo, which is the original proposal.   • Comment seemes like Gonnym had reverted my redirect. By the way, I am sorting through the links (before the revert, and still am) that are coming through to ABS-CBN with my alt account, RobertskySemi, using AWB. As I begin to add more replacement rules after an initial run, I am beginning to think that this is no longer a straightforward decision of deciding which page the redirect should be pointing to. The redirect has been used to describe multiple ABS-CBN affiliated entities across 3,000+ pages, rules like [[ABS-CBN|ABS-CBN International]], [[ABS-CBN|Star Studio]], [[ABS-CBN|Push.com]], \[\[ABS-CBN\|(ABS-CBN( (Corporation|Channel 2|International|Entertainment|Foundation|Network|News)|news\.com))\]\]

Per readership (page information), the article of the parent company has only 22,367 recent readers (as of 06/22/2020, PST), while the article of the TV network itself has 53,122 readers. Any incorrect linking in articles must be fixed instead of relying to redirects, with respect to the true context of the individual contents of those articles. Alternate proposal[edit]

Make ABS-CBN a disambiguation page instead. This is supported by Quidquidlatetadparebit (point made above) and Robertsky.

  • I went through 3,000+ which was linked to ABS-CBS to sort the redirection. Had received enlightening feedback from various editors here and on my talk page (@Gardo Versace:) about the redirection. (Thanks all!) There was a more or less an even split between Corp and TV network pages which the links are meant for. However, as mentioned, there are links which should be pointing to other ABS-CBS entities as well. Here are some of the other linked pages/entities that I had disambiguate as well: ABS-CBN 2, Star Magic through its redirects ABS-CBN Center for Communication Arts, Inc., ABS-CBN Talent Management & Development Center, Inc. (older names on older pages), ABS-CBN News, ABS-CBN News Channel, Star Studio (ABS-CBN Publishing). Furthermore, ABS-CBN page has a move history between the Corp and TV network over time. As such I feel that the primary topic that ABS-CBN represents both of the Corp and TV network, and anything else that is owned/affiliated and branded with "ABS-CBN" should be disambiguated, thus I would call for the ABS-CBN page to be a disambiguation page instead. robertsky (talk) 04:47, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    • I understand, even if you stated that ABS-CBN is COMMONNAME for the TV network during the move discussion at Talk:ABS-CBN Corporation. I don't think the move history between the Network and the Corp, which might have also caused the confusion with our redirect links, is significant that we're unable to discern the primary topic. Looking at the Corp's move log, somebody messed it up in the past, thinking that moving the Corp (titled ABS-CBN Corporation at that time) to the ABS-CBN title (occupied by the Network then) is complying with WP:NCCORP. That's wrong, and while that move has now been reverted, the Network is still not at its original title. I don't agree with making ABS-CBN a disambiguation page, we already have ABS-CBN (disambiguation), and the ABS-CBN name is more associated to the Network which was also the consensus that was recently achieved at Talk:ABS-CBN Corporation. Verb tense[edit]

Should the Network be referred to in the past tense or present tense in this Wikipedia article inspite losing its Congressional franchise? iamdumdum (talk) 11:23, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    • While WP:NOTCRYSTALBALL holds true in this situation. The corporation and the network franchise are separate entities. At the moment the corporation still exists but the franchise has been rejected (if you look at the corporation page ABS-CBN Corporation you will see it is still in present tense).       • The TV network still exists but they cannot broadcast through free-to-air means due to the denial of their franchise renewal. The transmitters are still owned by ABS-CBN. Therefore, "is" is the correct verb tense here. The TV network did not technically dissolve due to the franchise denial. Now, if ABS-CBN TV network is sold to a different entity and decided to rename it, you can use the "was" verb since the new network will not use the ABS-CBN name anymore.         • The ABS-CBN name is not the question here, but the existence of the network itself. How can they lay claim to the name itself if their franchise to operate does not exist? Also, while a channel at its present form may be deemed non-existent or succeeded via its sale to other company or via nationalization by the government, these are corporate events that already fall under the discussions of ABS-CBN Corporation (and with that view, I do agree with Sabaybayin that the corporation and the network are separate entities as far a television broadcast organization is concerned), it can also end its existence by the mere termination of its operations even without the changing of hands. I believe we have to settle with the fact that since they have not been granted any license/franchise, they are already deemed history. This might be hard to imagine because denial of broadcast franchise has not happened yet in the Philippines (and thus, no examples are available to cite), but just by looking at the status quo, we can see how much has changed for ABS-CBN and what it says about its very existence.     • The ABS-CBN has already ceased operations in full and has all available indications of shutting down. No right to transmission, no operations, and thus, ABS-CBN as a channel/network is already non-existent. But of course, ABS-CBN as a corporation did not close its operations yet; it is still fully operational and uses other platforms to make its programs available.   • Change to past tense. ABS-CBN as a network has already been denied license. The implications of which is that the network cannot use the transmitters because they have no right to the frequency previously allotted to them. License is a pre-condition for NTC to be able to restore ABS-CBN's use of the frequency. Consequently, they have lost their viability to exist as a network. Also, this situation has been implicitly affirmed by the ABS-CBN itself by stopping TV Plus channels' operations and by launching Kapamilya Channel on cable and satellite television providers in lieu of ABS-CBN. Any attempts of modifying info to include the "new media" context should take into consideration to what this article really means and discusses. Discussion about my Edits (Defunct)[edit]

Hi, my edit here as of November 16, 2020 04:35 (UTC) was undo last November 16, 2020 09:43 (UTC) so I replaced it as of November 17, 2020 03:53 (UTC) because ABS-CBN is already a defunct channel. As you see, other articles have this message: ABS-CBN (defunct), but the channel still broadcast on Facebook and YouTube. If you want to undo my edit, write the reason why below here. There's no need to add the |broadcast_area= parameter for major networks such as GMA and TV5 because there's already have a |available= parameter as they are almost exact the same and not all articles that uses the Template:Infobox broadcasting network have the |broadcast_area= parameter in it. Discussion about changing to past tense[edit]

Hi, why wont the network changed to past tense like for example: ABS-CBN was a Philippine commercial television and new media network? I saw this note at the editing area saying "Do not change to past tense. Network is just indefinitely suspended." Indefinitely Suspended means that the network ABS-CBN is longer suspended or not broadcasting, or in other words Defunct. Relaunch of ABS-CBN on 2021[edit]

Clarification[edit]

@Lorenzdlr:, please enlighten me what is the current status of the network. From what I understand, ABS-CBN (the network) is an inactive asset of ABS-CBN Corporation. Is the network itself a subsidiary of ABS-CBN Corp rather than an asset? Also regarding the network type. I think its not apt to include the line "Blocktime with ZOE TV (from October 10, 2020)[1] and TV5 (from January 24, 2021)" regardless of the status of the network. It would be appropriate to list A2Z and TV5 as network affiliates (which has its own field though) since these networks/channel are not owned by ABS-CBN Corp.Hariboneagle927 (talk) 15:23, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What word should be used at the availability parameter?[edit]

The transmitter of the network (Millennium Transmitter) is currently used by All TV, a television network owned and operated by Advanced Media Broadcasting System. At the availability parameter, it says "Nationwide (main transmitter inactive)". The transmitter is already active, will we change the word or leave it as is? Channel 2

Channel 2 was used as the frequency of the flagship station of ABS-CBN in Metro Manila from November 14, 1969, to September 23, 1972, and from September 14, 1986, to May 5, 2020. The network started using a channel logo with the "2" logo for use as a promotion from 1969 to 1972 with the slogan "The Family Channel".

After the closure of ABS-CBN due to the declaration of martial law, the DZAQ call sign and the channel 2 frequency were awarded to BBC as DWWX-TV from 1973 to 1986.

After the revival of ABS-CBN in 1986, the channel "2" logo is introduced into ABS-CBN in March. The features of the "2" logo rendered in Broadway typeface was a wing-shaped blue crest with a white curve at the top and a white line at the tail. This logo was used from 1986 to 1987 and had the slogan "Watch Us Do It Again!".

In March 1987, the first tri-ribbon "2" logo was laced with a rhomboidal star. It carried the slogan "The Star Network" when it aired as a station ID to reclaim its dominance in TV ratings. It was created using the Scanimate system the network took over from BBC-2. By 1988, the tri-ribbon was changed to red, green and blue stripes from the three white stripes it first used. The tri-ribbon logo showed a shooting star in the form of the number "2" in the idents which came out. Similarly, most numerical channel logos within this slogan have a star and versions came into regional TV channels - DYCB-TV 3 in Cebu, D-3-ZO-TV in Baguio, DYXL-TV 4 in Bacolod, DXAS-TV 4 in Davao and other regional stations. The tri-ribbon 2 was also used on microphone flags until the early 2000s.

Sarimanok

The Sarimanok, a legendary bird in Philippine folklore, was first used in 1966 to identify color broadcasts, somewhat similar to how the NBC peacock has been utilized. In 1993, which happens to be the Chinese Year of the Rooster, ABS-CBN relaunched the Sarimanok with a new station ID featuring the legendary bird. The Sarimanok ID became utmostly associated with the channel that ABS-CBN opted it to become the station's mascot. ABS-CBN later named its new 24-hour news channel the Sarimanok News Network, the precursor of the ABS-CBN News Channel. It was revived again in 2004 to promote regional broadcasts nationwide. The Sarimanok has appeared in the ABS-CBN's 2013 summer station ID as the artwork.

Evolution of ABS-CBN logos

The logo of the pre-merger Alto Broadcasting System (ABS) had a symbol composed of a transmitter with a circle denoting its signals, a precursor of sorts to ABS-CBN's current logos. The logo of the pre-merger Chronicle Broadcasting Network (CBN), on the other hand, had three blocks and the CBN letters in them. In 1961, the ABS-CBN brand was introduced and its first logo had a big letter B, unifying the names ABS and CBN, in a box placed between their channel numbers 3 (ABS' DZAQ-TV) and 9 (CBN's DZXL-TV).

A modified version of ABS symbol was launched in 1963, consisting of a triangle denoting a transmitter tower and four circles denoting the broadcast signal (similar to the 1953 ABS logo), enclosed in a rounded box and with the ABS-CBN text above, in a form that would evolve over the years to the present-day logo.

The logo soon after took on its current iteration: a vertical line, denoting a transmitter tower, with three concentric circles signifying Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, enclosed in a square frame, in 1967. The new logo became identical and inspired by the logo of the former German broadcaster and ARD member Sender Freies Berlin (SFB) based in Berlin. The logo also resembles a lollipop, spinning top toy (trumpo in Filipino), and logos of American recording companies Columbia Records and CBS Records International (although Columbia Records and CBS Records International has a vertical line underneath the circles instead of within the circles and also have a left-slant line and a black circle at the middle). At that time, it was rendered in black and white because color TV (despite the fact that it was ABS-CBN that introduced it the previous year) wasn't common yet and the logo style at that time separated ABS and CBN's names, putting ABS' name on top and CBN's on the bottom.

The network used a colored variation of the 1967 logo when color television was introduced and they re-launched operations in 1986, after 14 years of forced closure under martial law. The logo had the three rings detached from the transmitter and colored the three rings in red, green, and blue, and substituted the square frame with an outlined black box. The RGB-colored logo has remained relatively unchanged since then, though two modifications in 1993 (network's 40th anniversary) and 1996 (ABS-CBN Corporation's 50th anniversary) saw minor tweaks in the letters, the rings and the box. This is the longest logo to be used by the network after People Power Revolution alongside the 2000 logo, have used for 14 years from 1986 to 2000.

On January 1, 2000 (the first day of the new millennium), the ABS and CBN acronym again merged after 33 years but the ABS-CBN text is located below the symbol instead of the above like the 1963 logo and the hyphen is used between acronyms instead of a dot. The outlined black box that enclosed the three rings and the vertical line (that maintained their 1996 design) was replaced by a grey square (a crystal plane when rendered in 3D). The ABS-CBN text now adapts the Rotis Semi Serif typeface. Like with the 1986 logo, this is the longest logo to be used after the People Power Revolution which was also used for 14 years from 2000 to 2014.

The minimally altered version of the 2000 logo was introduced on October 7, 2013, as the secondary logo and officially became the network's primary logo on January 1, 2014, as part of its 60th anniversary and preparation for digital television broadcasts, and aiming to maintain the iconic structure of ABS-CBN's logo while at the same time giving it a new look suited for a period of popularity for social and digital media. This greatly modifies the "ABS-CBN" text, now using the modified version of Rotis Semi Serif typeface which dropped the once-standard serifs on the letters, giving the three RGB rings thicker width and perfected concentricity, and adopting a white square instead of a grey one from the previous 2000 logo. The only remaining aspect from the 2000 logo to be used on the 2014 logo is the letter "S" and hyphen, with the "S" still using the 2000 typeface.

The majority of the programs shown on the network are created by ABS-CBN Corporation's Entertainment division. ABS-CBN Entertainment is responsible for original programs ranging from musical and variety shows, showbiz, lifestyle, comedy talk shows, comedy, gag shows, and sitcoms. It also distributes shows from other ABS-CBN drama and television production units. Original and adapted telenovelas and drama anthologies are produced by Dreamscape Entertainment, Star Creatives Television and other production drama units created by ABS-CBN, while news, public service, and documentary programs are produced by ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs and by other independent production outfits. ABS-CBN also acquires and syndicates program formats from abroad and in the Philippines to serve as a replacement on its free-to-air television channels, such as TV5 and A2Z Channel 11. ABS-CBN currently distributes and syndicates their entertainment and news programs on various networks, free-to-air and cable channels, websites and steaming platforms, and live stream through various social media such as A2Z, ALLTV, ANC, Cinema One, Cine Mo!, iQIYI, iWantTFC, Jeepney TV, Kapamilya Channel, Kapamilya Online Live, KTX, Kumu, Metro Channel, Myx, TeleRadyo, TV5, The Filipino Channel, WeTV iflix, Viu, YouTube, Netflix and others, while there main terrestrial ABS-CBN network is currently unavailable due to the network's franchise controversy. ABS-CBN also airs and syndicates regional programs, TV specials, and sporting and awarding events.
