Merge proposal[edit]

I think its pretty clear-cut. Both articles are on the same subject; it's just a matter of actually merging them. Daniel J Simanek (talk) 08:05, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In fact they both are same. I am redirecting it. The info here are more unencyclopedic than useful. Hitro talk 19:02, 4 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Background information Missing[edit]

Well, I just want to say that I feel the background information section for this article is very important as its gives the history of the school, thus before I restore this column I would want a discussion on it. Probably within 72hrs I might re include the section to the article if there is no response. Ontoyinsimon (talk) 09:25, 11 September 2009 (UTC).[reply]

Requesting the Renaming of this Article[edit]

I think this article should be renamed from Accra Academy Senior High School to just Accra Academy. This is because the school is an Academy and it operates with the status of a senior secondary school. Bureaucrats should please help correct this.Ontoyinsimon (talk) 02:43, October,20, 2010 (GMT).

Move to Accra Academy[edit]

This does appear to be the proper name, and the added "Senior High School" seems not only redundant but in naming of Ghanaian schools, the name of two different (and mutually exclusive) institution types run together.

Per the request, I'm going to make the move, especially since this was proposed here 10 days ago and no one seems to object.

Also, here are some independent references which can be properly formatted and added to this article, as it relies too much on non-independent sources (just the Alumni Association). Wikipedia tends to demand independent, published sources (books, newspapers). There are innumerable references in the Ghanaian press to Accra Academy, so this should be no problem.

February 2011 Assessment[edit]

I am having a look at this article after a request on Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools/Assessment. I am assessing this article against the B class criteria.

*The article is suitably referenced, with inline citations where necessary. ☒N

i.e. It has reliable sources, and any important or controversial material which is likely to be challenged is cited. The use of citation templates such as {{cite web}} is not required.

The article relies heavily (over 30 refs) on a single primary source (the school website) and additionally a number of further references are from a school student handbook, which I assume is not available outside of the school, so is not really a suitable reference. The Notable Alumni section contains a vast number of non-notable alumni and is very poorly referenced. Points for action: More independent, reliable third party sources are required.

*The article reasonably covers the topic, and does not contain obvious omissions or inaccuracies.  But close...
i.e. It contains a large proportion of the material necessary for an A-Class article, although some sections may need expansion, and some less important topics may be missing.

Thea article contains a number of irrelevant trivia only of interest to pupils (i.e. all the information referenced by the Student Handbook), and I think that article would benefit from a little more about the present day school in addition to the sport section. The words to the school song should definitely be removed as per WP:WPSCH/AG.

*The article has a defined structure.  But...
i.e. Content should be organized into groups of related material, including a lead section and all the sections that can reasonably be included in an article of its kind.

The article has good structure overall, but the Notable alumni section should be presented as a bulleted list, currently it is a rather in-penetrable block of text.

*The article is reasonably well-written. Done

i.e. The prose contains no major grammatical errors and flows sensibly, but it certainly need not be "brilliant". The Manual of Style need not be followed rigorously.

The article could do with a good copy edit, but the spelling & grammar is overall fine for a "B" class article.

*The article contains supporting materials where appropriate. checkY

i.e. Illustrations are encouraged, though not required. Diagrams and an infobox etc. should be included where they are relevant and useful to the content.

*The article presents its content in an appropriately understandable way.checkY

i.e. It is written with as broad an audience in mind as possible. Although Wikipedia is more than just a general encyclopedia, the article should not assume unnecessary technical background and technical terms should be explained or avoided where possible.

Overall I don't feel that this article meets the B class criteria, so I am going to downgrade it to C class until the above points have been addressed. In my opinion the the most serious of the points above is the referencing issues, and I would treat this as a priority. As a general rule information for which a tertiary source cannot be found should be kept to a minimum, and I would remove all the information which relies solely on an unpublished student handbook, as it cannot be verified. Have a look at the WikiProject Schools Article Guidelines for some suggestions on how to improve this article. I Hope this will be of help for future editors. An image used in this article, File:Tps-SI.jpg, has been nominated for speedy deletion at Wikimedia Commons for the following reason: Copyright violations
What should I do?
Speedy deletions at commons tend to take longer than they do on Wikipedia, so there is no rush to respond. If you feel the deletion can be contested then please do so (commons:COM:SPEEDY has further information). Otherwise consider finding a replacement image before deletion occurs.

May 2011 re-assessment[edit]

I am re-assessing this article for WikiProject Schools following a request. I am leaving the importance rating as it stands at high-importance, given that the content of the article seems to indicate that this rating is appropriate. In review of the quality rating, in my opinion the article meets the WP:BCLASS criteria, though significant further work is required before the article can be given good article status or higher.

Firstly, I have made some adjustments myself. Having lots of references is good, though I have put these in columns to reduce the amount of space they take-up. I have removed the school song entirely as this is potentially a copyright violation and in any case, per WP:WPSCH/AG#WNTI and WP:NPS, inclusion of such content in the article is not appropriate. I have also nominated the logos uploaded on Wikimedia Commons for review, since school logos are usually copyrighted with the school and Commons only accepts free content. The logos should probably be re-uploaded locally as non-free content.

While the article is referenced well enough for B-class, there are still some gaps in references. For example, sources are needed for the "The Accra Academy Insignia" section. The references also need to be cleaned-up a bit and format standardised - this can be best achieved through citation templates, see WP:CITET. Also, references should be placed before or after punctuation, with one style used throughout the entire article.

The article on the whole needs to be re-organised into a more standard layout - see WP:WPSCH/AG#S. In particular, miscellaneous sections such as "further information" should be avoided wherever possible. While most of the article should be written in prose, this is not appropriate in all sections. For example, the alumni section would be better off as a list split-off into a sub-article if necessary. Editors should look at WP:WPSCH for the featured and good articles listed there to get a feel of how school articles are best laid out.

Some of the article content itself could also be improved. Editors should avoid excessive amounts of details on school policies only of interest to the school's pupils, for example the "Regulations and Sanctions" section could be better summarised. Use of more secondary sources would help in this area. Also, the article could better follow the WP:MOS. For example, words in all caps, underlined, or placed in bold should be kept to a minimum. 2014 assessment[edit]

Stemming from the 2011 re-assessment of the article major improvements have since been effected-addressing all the issues raised, and thus I am raising the status of the article to good article.--Osy (talk) 10:00, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
