This article is about Albany State University (ASU). In 2017, Darton College and Albany State University consolidated to become one university under the University System of Georgia (USG).

Albany State University is a public Historically Black College and University (HBCU) with two campus’s located in Albany, Ga (East and West Campus) and a satellite campus in Cordele, Ga (Cordele Center). Albany State University comprises three colleges.

In addition, the university enterprise includes the Holley Institute summer program, which consists of an intense four weeks of study to help high school students improve low SAT scores and gain admission to college. The program has a near 100 percent success rate and has received praise from the state Board of Regents. The campus includes a dental hygiene clinic, classrooms, laboratories, residences halls, two student centers, two wellness centers, two libraries, two theatre’s, an art museum and sports facilities such as tennis and racquetball courts, indoor swimming pool, indoor bowling alley and climbing wall, with surrounding nature trails, soccer fields and ball fields.

The entire complex has a full-time instructional faculty of 324 and a staff of over 562 with an annual economic impact of $293 million. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

The USG described the advantages and goals of the consolidation of the two institutions to “increase educational attainment levels and student success and transform how the University System impacts southwest Georgia”. The chancellor has said the consolidation is a long-term investment in the region. The consolidated institution assumed the name and branding of Albany State University in 2017. The board also named Albany State Interim President Art Dunning the permanent president of Albany State University. Academics Albany State University offers a variety of certification, undergraduate, graduate and specialists degrees through its three colleges. Darton College of Health Professions The Darton College of Health Professions houses three departments: Nursing, Health Sciences and Health and Human Performance, with 10 undergraduate degree programs and 5 certifications. College of Professional Studies The College of Professional Studies houses four departments: Teacher Education, Biology, Chemistry and Forensic Science and Mathematics and Computer Science, with 10 undergraduate degree programs. College of Arts and Sciences The College of Arts and Sciences houses five departments: English Modern Languages and Mass Communication, History, Political Science and Public Administration, Sociology and Psychology, Visual and Performing Arts and Military Science, with 16 undergraduate degree programs and two certificate programs. Graduate Studies The Graduate School offers programs leading to master degrees in the fields of Business Administration, Education, Public Administration, Social Work, Education Administration and Supervision, Councilor Education, Criminal Science, and Nursing. The Graduate School also offers an Educational Specialist degree. Distance Learning The Distance Learning program offers 47 online degrees and certifications. Students may earn certificates in Addiction Counseling, Computed Tomography, Computer Technology Option, Criminal Justice Management, Histology Certificate, Legal Assistant/Paralegal and Medical Coding. Associate degrees offered are Dental Hygiene, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Health Information Technology, Histologic Technician, Legal Assistant/ Paralegal, Medical Laboratory Technology, Nursing, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Physical Therapy Assistant, Radiologic Science and Respiratory Care. Bachelor degrees offered are Generic BSN program, Health and Human Performance, Management Information Systems, Organizational Leadership, RN to BSN and Social Work. Master Degrees offered are Criminal Justice, Early Childhood, Nurse Practitioner Program, Nursing and Special Education. Center for Faculty Excellence The Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) supports Albany State University’s (ASU) commitment to excellence in teaching and learning. The center promotes professional development opportunities that provide faculty with on-going training that reflects the needs identified by faculty members. Developing excellence in teaching and learning focuses on providing high-quality instruction through self-reflection and creating an academic learning environment that supports student success. Programs and services in the CFE are available to the entire University’s teaching community involved in the instructional process at ASU.

The Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) was formed in 2018 to support the philosophy that the faculty of the University is the foundation of the school and ASU has a moral imperative to support faculty development. To ensure the faculty continues to improve and excel, the CFE provides professional development opportunities to all members of the teaching faculty, including full-time, part-time, and online faculty members. The Center, located in BCB 290, is developing a resource room to provide research and reference materials for faculty members. It is focused on the strategies that develop and sustain a teaching culture that values and rewards teaching, respects and supports individual differences among learners, and creates learning environments in which diverse students and instructors can excel. The CFE is committed to the support and improvement of evidence-based learning and teaching practices. Finally, it is governed by specific guiding principles that include providing opportunities for professional development, research, service, and continuous program improvement. The principles include developing communities of learning, supporting innovation in teaching and learning, and helping to continue to develop relationships across disciplines. Office of International Education The Office of International Education missions is to further ASU’s mission of fostering diverse university programs and activities in order to realize its goal of educating students to become global citizens who are outstanding contributors to society. The goal is to foster initiatives, activities, and events that will enhance diversity and help develop students’ intercultural and global competencies to ensure they realize their full potential and become global citizens who are nationally and internationally marketable. The office advises and retains international students, offers professional development workshops in internationalizing, and assists students with study abroad scholarships. Since the office has opened in 2010, they have sent a total of 190 students abroad. ASU students have traveled to 17 countries and counting, including: Argentina, Belize, Brazil, China, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, England, France, Ghana, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, India, Peru, Spain, South Africa, and Trinidad & Tobago. In 2018, ASU is in the process of signing 3 new MOU’s with institutions in South Korea, India, and Nigeria. ASU has existing MOUs in Belize, Trinidad, and Jamaica. Honors Program The Velma Fudge Grant Honors Program is an academic program administered under the Center for Teaching, Learning and Scholarship. The Velma Fudge Grant Honors Program represents a commitment made by Albany State University (ASU) to broaden and enrich the educational experiences of bright, highly motivated and creative students. Honors Program students are provided opportunities for scholarships, access to special extracurricular programs, a chance to pursue independent projects and research interests, professional experience through internship programs and special service options. Through its specially catered curriculum, the V.F. Grant Honors Program provides the opportunity for faculty to teach academically talented students in inventive, interdisciplinary, small class settings designed to fulfill core curriculum requirements. Additionally, these students participate in advanced or intensive classes in particular disciplines. The Honors Program is specifically designed for academic scholarship recipients, academically talented freshmen, and transfer students with a proven dedication to academic excellence and scholarship. The Honors Program student must reach beyond scholarly grades for success and have the courage to demonstrate superior ethical leadership in his/her chosen field of study. The Honors Program serves as an educational catalyst for students to enhance the regular ASU experience. It focuses on intellectual accomplishment, high scholarship commitment, leadership, education and commitment to community-centered learning. Military Science (Army ROTC) This college elective for undergraduate and graduate students provides unrivaled leadership training for success in any career field. After this elective, students are prepared to be a U.S. Army officer.

Office of Research and Sponsored Programs The Office of Research & Sponsored Programs (ORSP) seeks to promote scholarship, research, creative activities, and engagement by encouraging and providing comprehensive support to faculty and staff in the pursuit of sponsored programs. The office identifies funding opportunities; disseminates grant-related information to faculty and administrators; organizes and supports the development of grant proposals and budgets; facilitates grant writing workshops to assist faculty in developing competitive proposals; reviews and approves proposals before submission to ensure compliance with both ASU standards and sponsor requirements; assists faculty in submission of timely, accurate, performance reports; assists with research and statistics needed for proposal development; obtains internal approvals for grant submissions; and reviews and processes contracts and sub-contracts awarded to the university. Transitional Studies, Advising and Academic Success The Transitional Studies, Advising, & Academic Success Unit at Albany State University primarily serves students during their first two years of matriculation. Every service, program and activity has been specifically designed to encourage and facilitate student success. Whether students begin in dual enrollment, a traditional freshman, or non-traditional adult learner, the unit is here to assist. From advising to peer tutoring, to ESOL services, to assistance in the learning centers, the Transitional Studies, Advising, & Academic Success Unit is a “one stop shop” for student engagement and success. Campus Albany State University's main campus in Albany, Georgia, encompasses more than 417 acres and has two local campuses and one satellite campus in Cordele, Georgia. It is made up of the former campuses between Albany State University and Darton State College. East Campus Joseph Winthrop Holley, born in 1874 to former slaves in Winnsboro, South Carolina, founded the institution in 1903 as the Albany Bible and Manual Training Institute. Two educators, Reverend Samuel Loomis and his wife, sent Holley to Brainerd Institute and then Revere Lay College (Massachusetts). When attending Revere Lay, Holley got to know one of the school's trustees, New England businessman Rowland Hazard. After taking a liking to Holley, Hazard arranged for him to continue his education at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. Holley aspired to become a minister and prepared by completing his education at Pennsylvania's Lincoln University. W. E. B. Du Bois inspired Holley to return to the South after he read Du Bois's writings on the plight of Albany's blacks in The Souls of Black Folk. Holley relocated to Albany to start a school. With the help of a $2,600 gift from the Hazard family, Holley organized a board of trustees and purchased 50 acres (200,000 m2) of land for the campus, all within a year. The aim of the institution at the time was to provide elementary education and teacher training for the local Black population. It was turned over to the state of Georgia in 1917 as Georgia Normal and Agricultural College, a two-year agricultural and teacher-training institution.[4] In 1932, the school became part of the University System of Georgia and in 1943 it was granted four-year status and renamed Albany State College. The transition to four-year status heavily increased the school's enrollment. In 1981 the college offered its first graduate program, a prelude to the school being upgraded to university status in 1996. Located on College Drive, the East campus houses many of the undergraduate programs, Hper Gym, the Fine Arts Hall and one of the ASU Student Activities Center’s. The Old President’s House, Honors Program, Caroline Hall Chimney, and Daisy Brown Hall are all found on this campus. In addition, the College of Professional Studies and the College of Arts and Sciences are located here. West Campus The institution was founded as Albany Junior College in 1963 and offered its first classes in 1966. In 1987, a committee of faculty, staff, students and community members chose the name Darton College. "Darton" is an Old English word probably meaning "town by the (River) Dearne," which refers to Albany's location on the Flint River.

The campus became a part of Albany State University during the consolidation and was renamed West Campus. Located on Gillionville Road, the East campus houses administrative offices, the Physical Education Center, a Theatre, Student Activities Center and a Dental Hygiene Clinic. In addition, the Darton College of Health Professions is located here. Cordele Center The Cordele Center was established in January 2002 as a part of Darton College. The center is the result of an initiative by local leaders to improve the region’s workforce by providing more post-secondary education options in Crisp County and its neighboring counties. The campus became a part of Albany State University during the consolidation. Cordele is located in Crisp County, about 50 miles from West Campus in Albany, Ga.

The Regents’ Engineering Pathway (RTP) Partnership The school participates in The Regents’ Engineering Pathway (RTP.) In its current structure, students complete two or more years of pre engineering courses at participating University System of Georgia (RTP Partner) institutions and then transfer to Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia Southern University, Kennesaw State University, Mercer University or the University of Georgia to complete a B.S. degree in Engineering (RTP Engineering Institutions).


Athletics Albany State University holds membership in NCAA Division II (as a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) and participates in the following sports: football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, golf, cheerleading, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross-country and men’s and women’s track and field.[14] Women’s soccer was added in the fall of 2017 and competes as an independent at the NCAA Division II level. The mascot is the Golden Ram.
