Ethnicity and nationality[edit]

Was Dovzhenko ethnic Ukrainian or Russian? If he was Ukrainian, why his native name is Александр Романович Довженко (not Олександр)? And what about his nationality after the dissolution of the Soviet Union? Ukrainian? Where are the reliable sources?
