Wikipedia is not a fan site[edit]

Too many of the editors of this article are making it a fan site, and not an encyclopedia entry. Who her best friends are, what the characters she plays says (fans: there's a difference between the actor and the person) and links to fan blogs and newsgroups do not belong in this article. --DavidShankBone 07:23, 10 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This page is not meant to be a fansite or a keeper of trite trivia. It is long and full enough that it does not need a trivia section per WP:TRIVIA. Please do not reinstate the section, and if any of the questionable relevant material to Bassett's career found therein should be included, please work it into the article. Oil of Olay spokesperson?[edit]

Is Angela Bassett the new Oil of Olay spokesperson? I thought I saw her on a commercial today? I think it was Oil of Olay,maybe it was a make up commercial.--74.240.227.203 (talk) 12:34, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm taking the following out of the article-[edit]

The Television and film career section reads like a fan site. For example-"Bassett's performance in the film was so popular that her scenes are often referenced in novels, and there are still social groups that gather to watch Waiting to Exhale".

I'm sorry,where and who are the social groups that still gather to watch this movie? Where are the sources for this? And where are the book sources about her "scenes" in novels?

2)"In Strange Days, Bassett plays Lornette "Mace" Mason who is regarded as the savior/heroine in the film often saving the male main character in gutsy, raw fist fights or fiery car chases. This sounds biased.(Gutsy,raw fist fights,fiery car chases)

3)"It can be argued that Angela Bassett's first truly leading role, where the film solely depended on her star power and charisma, was in 1998's How Stella Got Her Groove Back where she once again collaborated with McMillan."

This "where the film solely depended on her star power and charisma" is biased. I'm sorry but I don't think the "film solely depended on her star power and charisma" I mean what about Whitney Houston,Gregory Hines,Lela Rochon and Loretta Devine? I think they had something to do with the film too.

4)"She played Stella in the film about a 40-year-old professional woman falling in love with a 20-year-old Jamaican man. Bassett appears in nearly every scene in the film, showing off her toned figure in jogging suits or two-piece swimsuits, but more notably displaying her leading-lady status." My Gosh who wrote this? Her agent? "Appears in nearly every scene","toned figure","Leading lady status"? All this is biased.

5)"Bassett made headlines when she stated that she was offered the lead role in Monster's Ball (for which Halle Berry won a history-making Oscar) but did not accept it because of its representation of African-American females. Bassett compared the character to a prostitute. The producers of "Monster's Ball" have consistently maintained that she was never offered the role."

Once again,where are the sources that Bassett "compared the character to a prostitute"? Or that she passed on the role? One more thing I removed.[edit]

Here is one more thing I removed and why.-

1)"Bassett has not had to audition for a film since 1993's What's Love Got to Do with It although Bassett says that she would not mind auditioning for a director to prove that she can do a role they are not used to seeing her perform.

I removed "African-American" from the introduction. That is not necessary.[edit]

I removed "African-American" from the introduction to this article. Most Wikipedia articles for any Americans who happen to be black do not say this in the introduction, and I agree with this policy. She should simply be introduced as an American actress. Ms. Bassett is listed under the category of African American Actresses, and that is sufficient. Please take a look at the introductions to some other Americans who happen to be black, and you will see what I mean: Pearl Bailey, Phylicia Rashād, Diana Ross, etc.

You will find that most of them do not say "African American" in the introduction. If you agree with me on this policy, please help me go through this list and remove "African American" from any that say this in the introductory sentence. There may still be a few.

Early Life & Education[edit]

1. This section says that Bassett's ancestor, William Henry Bassett, "took the surname of his former oppressor..." That both editorializes ("oppressor") and avoids a clear statement of the facts. W. H. Bassett was an emancipated slave who took the name of his former owner. I propose to change the wording accordingly.

2. The footnote is mislabeled--there is no such publication as "Genealogy Magazine," and it links not to a magazine, but to a blog that requires an invitation-only sign-in.
