Unnamed section[edit]

Why St Arnaud? The only major population centres in NW Victoria in the 20's were Mildura and Swan Hill, both a long distance from St Arnaud. St Arnaud is quite close to Bendigo and Ballarat. 59.167.126.21 (talk) 12:19, 3 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Diocese of Saint Arnaud (Anglican Church of Australia)Anglican Diocese of St Arnaud – Move to this page was not discussed; the town is spelled "St Arnaud" not "Saint Arnaud"; reflects more common page title of dioceses rather than an overly complex naming system Deus et lex (talk) 12:03, 8 March 2021 (UTC) Relisting. ~ Aseleste (t, c, l) 16:29, 15 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This is a contested technical request (permalink). —Nnadigoodluck 13:28, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Contest this request The change was made by a bold move. I have opened discussions on other such bold moves (e.g. Diocese of Bunbury) as well as my own talk page. The disambiguator is more precise. A reader seeing "St Arnaud" is more likely to assume that the diocese is in England. With the new name, that error is less likely. There is nothing complex in the new name: Precision is preferable to ambiguous Common names. Laurel Lodged (talk) 12:36, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Reply - this user is being annoying; every other diocesan page in Australia has the same format, and this is the only one that is in the wrong format. Laurel Lodged has made these changes (after them being standardised and not touched for years) without discussing them with other users (putting one line into a discussion telling people she had done it is NOT discussion) and I'm asking for it to be restored to what it was. There is no other Diocese of St Arnaud anywhere in the world, so it does not need disambiguation, and the claim it can be confused with England is complete nonsense. It can't stay like this because the name of the town is mispelled which shows exactly why it needs to be changed back. I'd be grateful if a user could change this as I have requested. Deus et lex (talk) 12:41, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds like WP:Idon'tlikeit, not something that's rooted in policy. The categories for the bishops of those dioceses were also not touched for years - until they became the subject of a WP:CFD.. Thinking develops over time. The current name is less local and more encyclopaedic.Laurel Lodged (talk) 13:26, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Comment - that's complete nonsense. The original title which it is proposed to revert to is entirely consistent with policy: Wikipedia policy requires titles to be as concise as possible, one of the criteria is consistency (so it should be the same as all other dioceses in Australia), and it reflects the common nomenclature of the Diocese at the time, e.g. The Age on 23 April 1976 announcing the Diocese was to be abolished, reference under the Australian Government's national redress scheme, etc. There's no need for a disambiguation in brackets because there has been no other Diocese of St Arnaud (at any time). It also has the wrong spelling (your fault) and needs to be fixed. Your opposition to this change is nothing but disruptive and has no sound basis whatsoever. • Support return to original name in accordance with standard practice for Anglican dioceses in Australia.--Grahame (talk) 02:14, 10 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom. -- Necrothesp (talk) 11:59, 26 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support since the proposed name is concise, and the added clarification in the current name that it's in Australia is unnecessary in my view. Adumbrativus (talk) 04:07, 1 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom. - Bahnfrend (talk) 12:32, 7 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
An additional reason for my support is that the diocese had ceased to exist before the Church changed its name to Anglican Church of Australia in 1981, and therefore the name of the article is doubly incorrect. Bahnfrend (talk) 14:49, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
