the intro is excellent, if you have a postgraduate engineering degree in photonics As Einstein once remarked, any scientist who understood his own material, could explain it to a milk maid (and, his wife said, that is a slur on milk maids)

A good intro would be something like, an apd is a material where light striking a surface causes a large electrical signal, similar in concept to a pmt, but the materials and electrical circuits are different.
