Needs narrower focus[edit]

It might be good to try to limit the focus of this article to one region, or to address issues separately in the North and South. The problem is so huge, because it takes place against a background of massive economic and population shifts and changes. The first source deals with schools in the South and that history, but the lead of the article suggests it is addressing this on a national level. There are other studies that suggest the issue is becoming more clear that it is less about race/ethnicity than about educating poor children; middle-class black and Hispanic children are doing well in school (and many such families tend to move to middle-class neighborhoods with good schools, leaving poor ones behind, just as readily as do white families.) Maybe another way to create an article is limiting it historically - for instance, to address what were the characteristics of the students and teachers at the high performing black high schools in the South which are cited. Not sure it can work trying to encompass as much as it does now, as it seems incomplete. For instance, there is Chambers' proposal. But you could put against that New York's experience with community control in the 70s and 80s, which did not really lead to better student or teacher performance. I don't know if it's worthwhile to try to compare systems in same regions, or demographics, or sizes of cities. Change title to "History of African-American education"[edit]

In preparing the guide to further reading I note that "Black school" is rarely used. I propose changing the title to "History of African-American education" -- that is the usual terminology in Wikipedia. Does anyone object? Rjensen (talk) 16:57, 5 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
