Question[edit]

As I have explained I am not computer savvy. I am receiving emails from different people asking me to do different things. OK if you think it is advertising just ignore it but please can you take off the reference to the alumni. This whole wikipedia makes sense to computer people but for someone with little knowledge it is totally confusing. I see I am now blocked. Can you let me k now what I can do to update without advertising? I am listing what the school has, to me that is information — Preceding unsigned comment added by Togogirl (talkcontribs) 10:22, 4 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Togogirl: You are not blocked (if you were, you couldn't edit here). To request updates to the article, make edit requests like I described on your talk page. However if all you want to do is add advertising copy to the article, please stop wasting your time and ours. You can look at Gloucester School to see what neutral language looks like. Lastly, you haven't given a reason to remove the Alumni section. --NeilN talk to me 14:02, 4 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I was actually sent a message to say I was blocked. The reason I want to remove the alumni section is that it scares people, this guy was not a nice guy. With the time difference now I will look at the Gloucester school and certainly try to do a "unadvertising edit'". I have explained I am not doing this stuff just to annoy you or waster your time. I will try to use neutral language and send on the results — Preceding unsigned comment added by Togogirl (talkcontribs) 15:53, 4 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The unfortunate reality is that Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab did attend BSL. That does not say anything negative about the school. I see it as that he made bad decisions despite his BSL education. Nonetheless, he has to be included since he is A. individually notable, and B. did in fact attend the school. WhisperToMe (talk) 20:54, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A comment from an editor[edit]

I have just written to an editor who calls himself Mean as Custard about his deletion of what I submitted about the British School of Lome. What Wikipedia has currently is not factual and at least part of the entry is meant to be harmful. Someone has listed under "Notable Alumni" the name of a Nigerian student who attended BSL many years ago. After he left he went to London and there fell under the spell of radial Islam and subsequently tried to blow up an American airliner. But clearly this is not a relevant fact about our school. Who ever put that comment in the Wikipedia article did so with malicious intent. While it is true he did attend our school what he did has nothing to do with us in any way.

I do not understand how describing our operation as a school is pure advertising. Nothing in what I wrote is opinion or hyperbole. I tried to answer Mean as Mustard but my message seemed to get hung up and didn't go through.

You ack that I use four tildes to sign this email. I am using an iPad and I don't have a clue as to how to access a tilde - even though I do know what it is.16:07, 3 December 2014 (UTC)16:07, 3 December 2014 (UTC) --Bslheadmaster (talk) 16:07, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"The BBC News article states "Nigerian media quoted Mr Mutallab, an influential banker who is well connected in Nigerian politics, as saying his son first became radicalised while studying at the British School in Lome (BSL), Togo." Theroadislong (talk) 08:44, 5 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I know it is embarrassing for the British School of Lomé, Togo to have Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab as an alumnus (defined as anyone who attended the school, regardless of whether they graduated or not). Nonetheless, he did attend BSL ("as saying his son first became radicalised while studying at the British School in Lome (BSL), Togo.").

Let's review Talk:University_of_Massachusetts_Dartmouth#Dzhokhar_Tsarnaev_Not_an_Alumnus. Even though members of the UMass Dartmouth community strongly disliked the idea of listing Dzhokhar_Tsarnaev as an alumnus, Wikipedians make it clear these articles are not publicity for these schools. Alumni lists do not only include alumni who the schools are proud of, but also alumni that embarrass the school (so long as the alumni are notable for their own Wikipedia articles).

The BSL Lome community (administration, parents, and students) need to accept that Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab must be on the alumni list on Wikipedia. WhisperToMe (talk) 20:37, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
