2006 post[edit]

This seems an extremely articial concept (even though many artifices ultimately gain acceptance) especially when translated into neo- Welsh- the word for the Atlantic (Yr Ywerydd) is cognate with that for Ireland (Iwerddon) and so there is barely room for such a notion----Clive Sweeting

Devonian?[edit]

The article on Devonian says it was the ancestor to Cornish and Breton, dating prior to the 1200s. This article says that the Celtic sea wasn't named until 1921. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 12.172.37.45 (talk)

When and where the name was coined[edit]

I've been trying to find more info on how the name took.

It was coined by EWL Holt, but when and how? Google fragments offer mixed evidence.
- Brewer's Britain & Ireland (ISBN 030435385X, p.218, sv Celtic Sea) says it was in 1921 — which would be just before he died
- "The floor of the British seas" by A. H. W. Robinson in Scottish Geographical Magazine, Vol.68 1952, p.67, says it was in 1906
- Oceanic Management, Conflicting Uses of the Celtic Sea and Other Western U.K Waters: report of a conference held at University College of Swansea, 19-22 September 1975 (ISBN 0905118057 1977, p.xiv) says "... Mr. EWL Holt who proposed the name "Celtic Sea" at a meeting of Irish, Scottish, ..."
The earliest uses I can google are:
- "The Origin of the Scottish People" in Nature 1921, Volume 108 Number 2721, p.548 says "... along what may be called the Celtic sea-passage — St. George's Channel, ..."
- "The distribution of Arachnactis albida M. Sars in the Celtic sea" by PG Corbin, NK Panikkar in the Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, 1942 25 (3). pp. 509-516 uses it in the title and elsewhere, and cites the following as saying EWL Holt coined "mer Celtique"; adding they haven't found it in Holt's writings.
  - E. Danois (1938, Paris) L'Atlantique: Histoire et vie d'un Ocean
It is first spoken in Oireachtas debates in 1973, after Ireland joined the EEC;
- though it was used in a statute on herring fisheries in 1971 (S.I. No. 262/1971).

Languages[edit]

Bazonka, you state that We must use languages of the surrounding land only. I agree there comes a point where including alternate names in the lead gets silly, for example if we were to add Russian, but what's you bone with Gaelic and Manx and where do you get this narrow interpretation from? I don't see any harm in having those two and I wouldn't say the link is that tenuous given the thing is called "Celtic". Akerbeltz (talk) 17:34, 4 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The term is applied to an area between, and beyond, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany and France. There is a justification for including the sea's name in the languages of those areas, but there is no reasonable justification for the names in other languages. It's not a "narrow interpretation" - it's not as though it's an area "claimed" in any way by all Celtic nations. Ghmyrtle (talk) 17:43, 4 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with Ghmyrtle. The Celtic Sea does not border all Celtic lands and it does not belong to the Celtic people. Because the sea is nowhere near Scotland or the Isle of Man, their languages are as irrelevant as Russian.
