Mr Big Shot nickname in intro?[edit]

Why does it belong in the intro? The nickname isn't exactly what makes him notable. I think stuff like (a) he's a professional basketball player and (b) he's been an NBA Finals MVP are more notable than his nickname. I was inclined to agree, but Google turned up several references to the nickname, for instance [1], and [2], in addition to that which was provided by Niccos. Famous athletes' well-known nicknames [3], [4] are often included in the ledes. JNW (talk) 00:52, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Many people call him by that nickname, and it deserves to be in there. It's obviously not as notable as the finals MVP, but both can stay. He made his legacy by making a ton of big shots. Really though? By putting it in the lead (first sentence no less!), you would be implicitly suggesting that above all else, the "Mr Big Shot" nickname is the reason for his notability. Big shots made him who he is, so it should be the first thing someone sees after his name. What's so bad about it being there anyway? I just don't get it. Look around, you see nicknames on most of the professional athletes that have a nickname in the first sentence. Clearly, I'm not the only one that thinks this way. WP:OTHERCRAPEXISTS is generally not a good argument. Anyway, your other point, that his clutchiness demands mention in the opening sentence reads a lot like WP:POV and WP:SYNTH. First of all, a nickname has nothing to do with his personal life. The only place the nickname really fits is the first paragraph. The nickname is widespread, and almost interchangeable with his name. And I don't get why you're so touchy on this. The edit doesn't ruin the article, and you are the only one with a gripe. The issue here isn't whether or not he's clutch. It's encyclopedic protocol--for information to be in the lede, it has to be essential, and supported by sources. I'm not particularly moved on this one either way, but if you're going to go strong to the hoop, you'd best have your team (references and accepted conventions, which I've tried to help line up) behind you for the rebound. Also, this is a legitimate difference of opinion, not vandalism, so it's in everyone's interest not to automatically undo previous edits. This is not worth edit-warring. The nickname looks awkward in the first sentence, but I could live with mentioning it at the end of the lead. It's a fairly popular nickname. (Surprisingly, there are more google hits for "Chauncey Billups" + "Mr. Big Shot" than "Gary Payton" + "The Glove". That could be because Billups has spent more of his career in the Web 2.0 era, but it's still pretty interesting, I think.) Zagalejo^^^ 04:02, 29 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I'd be fine with the nickname at the end of the lead. It's not "Shaq" or "T-Mac", but it's certainly more widely known than "S.T.A.T" (like, who calls him that?) or Bubbachuck. New Billups profile image needed[edit]

It has been just over a year since Billups was traded from the Detroit Pistons to the Denver Nuggets, and the image of Billups in the red Pistons uniform needs to be changed to that of a Nuggets uniform. He wore No. 7 during the 2008-09 season (as a tribute to Denver Broncos hall-of-fame quarterback John Elway), but during the offseason, he reverted to the No. 1 jersey, the same number he wore with the Pistons. Teammate J.R. Smith, who previously wore No. 1, agreed to change his jersey number (to No. 5) in order to accomodate Billups' request to wear No. 1 for the current 2009-10 season. I've been searching for images of Billups in his new No. 1 Nuggets jersey, but haven't had much luck, I've seen several images of Billups in his (now) old No. 7 jersey. If anyone sees a good image of Billups in his newer Nuggets No. 1 jersey, please step up and replace the current profile image. Thank you. --DPH1110
