Additional citations; low importance.[edit]

After seeing the template for additional citations was added (which indicates that the reviewer saw unreferenced statements) I checked both the article and the given source again. I cannot see any statement that is not contained in the source. So why this template?

Is it necessary to give more than 1 source? Or do I have to state the exact line of the source for every sentence?

This is already the third time in a short while that additional sources were demanded in an article of mine and only after pointing out that the source actually contained the information it was removed in one article.

Unfortunately I must say that I am slowly loosing interest in creating articles on the topic of synagogues in Ukraine in the English Wikipedia. Topo, because nearly all are marked of "low importance".

When I started on this topic (first in the German Wikipedia) I hoped to bring back parts of the once rich cultural heritage of the Jewish community in Eastern Europe that was brutally wiped out in WW II and most of its monuments destroyed. But maybe that is of low importance?

At the moment I take most of the information from the books: Heaven’s Gates. Masonry synagogues in the territories of the former Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.' and Heaven’s Gates. Wooden synagogues in the territories of the former Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.' by Maria and Kazimierz Piechotka; both have around 700 pages each. Each desription is much shorter and may be only 2 - 3 pages and, seen by itself, be of 'low importance'. But altogether these books are the most valuable work on this topic.

I thought by creating these articles with the relevant information about the history and architecture together with the connected List of synagogues in Ukraine I could over time give a proper and more complete overview that would have some importance both to the history of Jews and to Ukraine..--Wanfried-Dublin (talk) 05:42, 4 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Two years ago Rosguill added tags that this article needs more references and that it should be expanded. I replied that the article does not contain unreferenced facts. Nothing happened. I think each one who is engaged in Wikipedia can expect is either an answer what is not referenced or that this tag be removed by whoever included it. These tags statement unsourced are more a joke then help; some are in articles for ten years or more and nobody bothers. It looks that some are proud if they can tag as many statements as possible each day. Is there a competition among the administrators?
Too, I checked the Ukrainian article which was recommended for expansion. If you take away the part about Jewish life in Drohobych, which does not necessarily belong to this article, there is not really much left which can be included. In fact, this article includes facts, that are not in the Ukrainian one. So what?
Sometimes it looks that whoever tags articles doen not bother to read the article at all not to mention to look at the given source.
Coming back to the unreferenced sources: I had created a List of synagogues in Poland; this was moved to Draft:List of synagogues in Poland by John B123. There is a List of synagogues which links to lists in certain countries. Many of them do not give references either. But only mine was moved. And it was suggested it would be okay, if this list includes only entries, that have an article. So if I delete 70 or more percent the list would be okay. When I created this list for the German Wiki I included only synagogues that have articles there. When I saw the poor standard of the list about some synagogues in Poland I used created this list for the English wiki, but kept all entries because they showed that many more synagogues once existed in Poland and why they were destroyed.
If not (nearly) all of the articles about synagogues I created would have been rated as of low importance, I would have have written some missing articles (red links in lists are a way of showing what should and could be done). Imaging a company (lets say IBM) were most of the employees that do there work properly but are not outstanding are told your work is of low importance. Great way to motivate them.

Wanfried-Dublin, it looks to me like the whole Architecture section is unsourced. If the content in those sections can be backed up by the existing sources, all it needs are more inline citations. As for the "low importance" bit, I believe I explained that when you first commented about that; "low importance" is the default importance label that is used when tagging for wikiprojects, particularly ones that the tagger is not actively involved with. It's up to editors more involved with said wikiprojects to assess the relative importance of the topic to their field of interest and update that. signed, Rosguill talk 16:34, 10 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Rosguill I checked the article again. I saw that the relevant reference was in the history section; it contains both information about the history and the architecture and I did not want to include it twice, but stated anyhow that it contains all information about the building. I moved this reference now to the end of the architecture section. I hope this is clear now.
As to the low importance: I know it is not your fault, but I find it frustrating after sometimes long searches for any literature on these synagogues (the Nazis not only erased the whole population and many buildings, but often tried to erase all memory of the Jewish culture as well, and the Soviet rule did nothing to bring back this memory either), and then after finding some articles and try to write a meaningful article being told: low importance. Looking at the few articles I wrote in the English Wiki and the many in the German Wiki, each one might be of low importance, but together with the list of synagogues for the countries in Eastern Europe I think they are relevant - unless one considers the whole subject of (in many cases vanished) synagogues in Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania ... of low importance.
