Bank Holiday/Public Holiday[edit]

"Christmas became a Bank Holiday in Scotland, in 1871."

"Christmas Day did not become a public holiday until 1958 in Scotland,..."

Are both of these statements true? If so, we bank holidays different to public holidays? Peteinterpol (talk) 13:57, 22 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

In England, 'public holiday' and 'bank holiday' essentially mean the same thing. In Scotland, a bank holiday is a day the banks (and other financial institutions) are closed. A public holiday is holiday for the general public.

In 1871, Christmas Days was declared a bank holiday across the UK. In Scotland, this meant banks were closed on that day, but many people who didn't work in banks would still be expected to be in work. 178.16.6.40 (talk) 11:08, 24 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

1958 Christmas Public Holiday in Scotland[edit]

thank you for initiating this article. am a little concerned about your revision dated 4 Dec 2011 (06:39)

the statement "Christmas Day did not become a public holiday until 1958 [in Scotland]" can be found in a few books. in my opinion, it is rather misleading. since, there is no legislation indicating Christmas was ever declared a public holiday in all of Scotland, in 1958.

it is only Scottish Bank holidays that are decided by parliament, and are the same across the whole of Scotland. Public or local holidays, are determined by local authorities, and differ between areas.

the format of your previous revision, dated 4 Dec 2011 (06:19) ,that states :

"Christmas Day was commonly a normal working day in Scotland until the 1960s and even into the 1970s in some areas." seems to make more sense..

however, I would go further, to say that Christmas may have been declared a public holiday in some localities, in Scotland, as early as the 1940's (or possibly, even earlier ?)..

the present rendering with a specific year (1958), would be more acceptable, if a region could be established. as example, [Glasgow] was the first locality to declare Christmas a public holiday in Scotland, in [year]..to do so, would require additional research..am hoping those with the available resources, in Scotland, will be able to obtain the relevant information.Gfigs (talk) 10:02, 16 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I unfortunately don't have the resources to research this..however Jocelyn Grant, archivist for the National Records of Scotland, in her 2018 article "Christmas:Banned in Scotland" has indicated the Christmas public holiday in Scotland began in 1971 (not 1958)..she has posted copy of an article entitled ‘Scotland’s Christmas’, from the Glasgow Herald, 22 July 1970, to prove this..would appreciate that someone could look into this, and update the article..many thanks Gfigs (talk) 14:36, 21 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Clootie dumpling[edit]

Sorry, but why is there a picture of a clootie dumpling in this article?
